nice, that filled quickly. We have now 16 interested parties for the tournament. Anybody else who is still interested can put their name down as an alternate, in case people go missing or decide to not enter. Hey Deep, continue to run your tournament as you have planned, but just so you know, I'm putting together a tournament engine for Tetribot so that reporting and such can happen easier. I'd have you try it out with your bracket, but registration would becoming a nightmare (nor is it ready to go).
okay, just so we are all on the same page--could each individual PM(so as not to clutter the thread) me your TetrisDS wifi name and your friend code. I have many, but i think some are outdated as people have changed names. Also, if you give me your unique BlockStats rank image code (ex. a7a12ae6219136cc13b4fd6289dda.gif), i will compile a list showing all our ranks in 'realtime.' I can get a couple from the broken sigs, but a full list would be really nice and convenient. thanks, deepdorp
Lurkers, don't become no-shows now! Oh, and I request every set is first to 10 games. After all the effort to meet your opponent, I don't see why we don't play just a little bit more.
I think the handicap needs to be specified in the tournament rules. I get very different results when both my opponent and myself are on level 2 than when we're both on level 4. I'm partial to handicap 3, but as long as it's consistent across all matches, I'll be happy.
Given that the handicap just specifies gravity rate, and it's a tradeoff between being able to shift pieces in mid-air and being able to slide them under overhangs, I'd go with each player chooses his or her own handicap before each game.
This is where I wish I had a DS. My older brother is the only one I know who's owns a DS and a copy of TDS. (But he does'nt live with me) Not to mention the nearest Wifi access point is over 70km from my house. (not to bad) I will get a router and a DS sooner than later. (Maybe 2 weeks) Oh well, next tournament count me in. - Jono
colour_thief, i agree. first to 10 wins for each round it is. The final though i think should be win by 2 (maybe something extreme like a one game push tiebreaker in the event of 20-20 though?). my original idea and still is to have handicap totally up to the player. Personally, I will probably always be using level 0 because I'm so used to it from wi-fi. I think forcing level handicaps creates more of a handicap than not using them at all, so i guess you could say i'm pro-choice with that issue. okay, for the scheduling, it seems like although ideal, it could be impossible to all meet at once, so how does anybody feel about announcing the seedings on Friday, then play one round each on Sat, Sun, and semis and finals both on Mon? There would be nightly postings for that day's results so you would know who to schedule with for the next day. Is that too spread out? It seems like at least a couple days might be necessary. feedback?
id say hc 2 should be the lowest setting just because the garbage is ridiculous easy otherwise. tourny over in a couple days? idk...dont get your expectations up there. think about 2 weeks.
I agree that there should be a constant handicap accross the board. Also, I thought this affected how scrambled your garbage was. Is this wrong? As for a timeframe... With timezones and day jobs, I think this tournament might last a little longer than you expect.
I agree about the schedule. I'll do my best to be available but I need more leeway to organize my matches. As for the handicap, I prefer being given the choice. I think each player should be able to play the way that is more natural to him.
Will send a PM with my details when I get home from work later. I don't think you could feasibly run a round every day as people will need time to arrange a mutually convenient time to play, especially where time differences are involved. The Something Awful forums tournament I played a little while ago had a round each week with no shows being dropped at the end of each week and it worked quite well. edit: PM sent
The gravity rate is not the only thing affected by the handicap. It also determines how "garbagey" your garbage is. This is crucial, as I seem to be faster than many others at clearing garbage at leven 4 and 5, but not as fast as them at making pure tetrises at level 1 and 2. I think everyone being set to handicap 3 is a good compromise in this area.
The speed really gets quick fast on handicap 3 but the garbage is the closest to WiFi garbage. Handicap 2 is a little more reasonable speed wise, however the garbage is a little tetris friendly. its a toss up.
I think we need random garbage, even if it means faster drop speed. Clean garbage, in my opinion, makes for unbalanced games. It might also be cool of we could somehow get the top 4 together for some 4-player action.
hmmm, the handicap issue seems pretty heated, but I still want to go with player choice. To address the issue of unbalanced garbage, I would say that in a win-10-game format, the balance will shift back and forth, and nobody would be helped/hurt significantly more than their opponent. For those that want to compete on the same level as their opponent, just be in contact before-hand and mention that you will be matching whatever handicap is chosen, or work out a deal before-hand to both play at a specified level. Based on other feedback, i guess i was a little ambitious with the timetable. I think one round per week is a little excessive also though, since it will really break the continuity of the event. How about we get the first round over this weekend, then the second round during next week and the semis and finals over next weekend? After the first round there will only be 8 people afterall, which becomes much more managable.
Time zones are a problem. What if whenever one contestant is not working or sleeping, his opponent is working or sleeping?
