OK, to simply conclude :

The real warrior players should play on DEATH and not on texmaster !! [IMG]
But 2-3 sec of gap means that kotetsu is still at a m rank at ~3:00.. [IMG]

    Nope, it's 2-3 seconds x 5 since there are 5 sections.

Anyhow, if the purpose is to simulate Death, then yeah, a player should play on Death or simulate it exactly. However, as a player who seeks to constantly improve, I have to assert that I'm not a fan of artificial delays that aren't beneficial.

  3. There is a common problem here, and it is called emulation.

We all want to play the original game, but when it isn't possible we must play it emulated, which will be slow on slow computers, or fast and annoyingly laggy on faster computers.

It isn't a coincidence that the top ranked players here have the real arcade to play on.

    For example:

Player A plays Mame with slowdown cheat, and gets M rank.

Player B plays real hardware and gets M rank.

Player C tries Mame and can't get past level 300.

Usually Player B will end up in the top ranking because Player B spent more time playing and buying TAP to actually become better than Player A. Player C can't still get past level 300. Player C then tries Texmaster and reaches level 400.

So what can be done about this problem? Nothing for now, but there will be a solution soon. A solution where it will be equal for all parties.

But until then, only TAP shall count, as long as Texmaster or any other clone can prove to be 100% like TAP.

I just want to add a little thing :

I admit that is was only during 3 days and a half, but I tried both supports in my life :

-a bit on the real system, the jago's jamma

-a lot on my mame which run well, with few very little lags..

The only difference is that the real TAP is a little bit more pleasant and fluid, but not harder or easier in my opinion..

The main unsupportable and absolutly boring problem is for the DOUBLE, Everytime when I try to time-attack it, there is a lot of missing input which are not producted on the game and it is a source of a lot of misplacement from me..Bou can't feel it because he doesn't play enough fast..But trust me, I am impatient to play with c_t to avoid this problem with him..

  5. It is interesting that you said ordinary play is "about the same" whether it is emulated or not, and doubles has input loss. Because, I can confirm 100% that the real hardware has input loss in doubles. Whenever a player clears lines, the other player's input is ignored during the line clear animation. YES REALLY! This causes a great deal of misdrops for me on the real hardware as well.

I honestly think that people who claim emulation is "unresponsive" compared to Texmaster and Heboris are simply noticing the difference in DAS behaviour. You are blaming emulation for faithfully reproducing the real game. The small lag that exists (except with that Linux build) shouldn't be what is determining whether you survive or not.

...I've got a PC stick in the mail. I'll play the crap out of MAME for a bit when I get it and we'll see if I still think the emulation is fine. I haven't played it much since I broke 4 minutes of level 500 survival.

  6. Oh yea, I know why. I know Doubles mode well and it is because the DAS is never executed, or anything for that matter during a line clear. The game is totally ignored for the other player during a line clear because no one should be able to get inside the emptyness that is part of the line dropping animation effect (compact stack).
Input will always be registered, but charging DAS requires the game to be active, and it is not active during the line clear. This may be a possible bug, and if it is considered to be it, I think there might be solutions.

This verifies that you have a pretty high skill and possible good computer. The higher skill you have, the less you notice stuff like DAS delays. You simply charge in the right direction most of the time. But I listen to your input on the matter and I agree. And this is why I still think emulated TAP, even on keyboard is a valid form of ranking here.

Overall, TAP is hard and it never helps with unscheduled delays. The better you are at tetris, the better you can deal with situations such as missdrops caused by slow emulation.

I don't understand at all here LOst..

    I think exactely the contrary..

More you are skilled, more you feel the subtile differences..

Unless a line that is being cleared is treated as solid until it actually falls. Tetris Attack does this for part of its line clear animation. Or they could have just set gravity to 0 during line clear delay and ignored down and up.

The game and the input could have been written as two separate processes. That's how Windows, Mac OS classic, Mac OS X, and other home computer operating systems work: when you press an arrow key, DAS charges even if the computer is busy doing something. And it's also how Lockjaw Engine works. If you're looking for presses of keys like start to pause the game or to join player 2, you have to read the controller, and it's probably just one more line of code to call the input translator. Even in TAP, they made the game and the audio two separate processes, and they made the game and the background animation two separate processes.

  9. I know that we think differently. I may be wrong. But when it comes to DAS charging, the sooner you know where the next piece shall go, the fastar you can respond, and by that, the less input lag you will notice. Then again, it is a matter of training to become faster. I am actually a slower thinker than the DAS speed of Death level 300+. That's the main reason I will die around that level. But even if I use my very best to try to survive, still the input lag will kill me:

GM class player's piece location decision think time (just guessing):

---

LOst's piece location decision think time:

----------

    Death Level 300 DAS time:

----------

    Input lag time:

-

hmm..I don't know how to answer..I see exactely what you mean by your scheme..

But don't forget that your are an exception LOst..You are very focused and experimented about the internal working of the game..It is normal that you feel so well the defaut of lag..But Bou, who have a similar SKill than yours, doesn't feel anything..He is unable to see the difference between Heboris and TGM for exemple..If he compare the SHIRASE nad the DEATH, he will say :" shirase is faster..",

he won't say : "in shirase the ARE is lower than in DEATH.."

The torikan has come back to invade the world of Tetris!!! And there's no escape (except playing faster [IMG] )!

  13. not sure if you guys accept Texmaster scores... that is what I have been playing since it went public. I can perform better in Texmaster than on TGM2P with MAME. I don't know if that is because I got better or because there are lag issues with my MAME setup.

anyway if you do want to include texmaster on the leaderboard, here is my newest record:

    Death (Sudden)

Small improvement, but I broke into the 400 section!

Also, I've been getting a lot more consistent as of late--I almost always at least break into the 200 section, and get to the 300 section about a quarter of the time now rather than once or twice a playing session.

Hopefully we'll see a little more of an improvement once I get into the 300 section without a mess of a stack, and therefore will get to 400 not 2 cells from teh top. =P
