Obviously I'm nowhere near the league most of you lot are in, but I'm just posting my scores anyway so I have something out there to improve on. For those who were interested, I too am playing with a gamepad.

Do all my settings look ok?

First off, very nice improvements everyone! It looks like some of you guys just came back from a break as well. [IMG]

Next off, I'd like to ask everyone to please include whatever controller method they are playing on when posting a record unless it is the same as what is displayed on the leaderboard. In general, I am just expecting keyboard, arcade joystick, and gamepad as the standard mediums but if something comes up, I'll adapt. But please don't get ridiculous and purposely try to play with gimmicky things like DDR pads (I'm looking at you tepples [IMG] ) and Wiimotes. Perhaps if you're ONLY good with such controller methods, then go for it [IMG] . And as a last note, LJ GBA, DS, etc. will be considered gamepad unless otherwise noted by special circumstances.

    Re: [Lockjaw] 40 Lines & 180 Seconds

    Hi and welcome! [IMG]

Those are actually not bad scores at all for a first entry. We all have to start somewhere. I did a lot of climbing to get where I am today. There's actually an older thread than this one somewhere showing the beginnings of this race for improvement. I remember being under 110 TPM chasing caffeine at 120 who always remained 10 TPM higher than me. And then there was the intense race between Jono and caffeine for top spot, who kept one upping each other. So anyway, I guess the message is to just hang in there. [IMG]

For 180 Seconds, you might want to change the speedcurve from Exponential to Zero. Exponential causes the gravity (falling rate) to increase and therefore become more difficult towards the end as you clear more lines. It doesn't make much of a difference in 40 Lines since the games end so quickly.

In general, your settings look fine. As you get better, consider lowering your DAS initial delay and repeat rate. But as you're using a gamepad, the former might not necessarily be the most optimal the further you decrease so I would just settle with whatever feels best. I would also consider replacing soft drop with firm drop eventually. Firm drop is a hard drop that does not lock, and so for the most part carries over with it the most useful functions of a soft drop but is much faster.

Some terrible play at times. I've been getting over 115 TPM a few times, but no personal best time.

@ deepdorp: I get close to 40 seconds using the iCheat with a TPM of about 150.

Is it wise to practice speed for both ARS and SRS at the same time? Even though ARS has more importance for me now, I also want to get better when playing TDS, TOJ, etc.

Oh, I'd say it would be wise in the long run. I'm a proponent that more knowledge = more perspective = more potential. You may not realize it in the short term due to tetlag when switching finesse between ARS and SRS but your thought patterns are becoming increasingly modular. As you develop this modularity, you will begin to gain a dynamic playstyle that adapts to unknown situations with more ease than before.

I barely played tetris on PC last week. I injured my left wrist and could only play on DS... But not playing for a week has already proven to be a good thing.

I used the last LJ version and keyboard. If I use another imput method I will mention this, but I don't expect this to be the case any day soon. And I'm impressed you get sub 40 seconds with joystick Amnesia!

I feel very comfortable playing with DAS 133ms 1G and I got close to 120 TPM. Most of my games are between 55 and 60 seconds now. TPM is over 100 all the time and close to 110 in most cases. Almost sub 50 seconds and I hope I can do it this month.

My SRS skills are improving little by little too. But it's very hard to switch from ARS to SRS and get good times immediatlely because of the excessive misdropping. -__-

Meroigo if I'm not mistaken this is the first time I've beaten your time in the 40 lines challenge. I honestly hope you beat me soon to motivate me even more! ^^

    Re: [Lockjaw] 40 Lines & 180 Seconds

    Thank you!

Well the difference between our times is only a little more than 1.5 seconds. Nothing compared to the large gaps that I had to bridge. And every time I got a little closer you made sure to make the gap even bigger to make me feel down even more. ;)

I've been chasing your time for over 6 months never giving up hope I would one day come close to you. I'd be lying if said that it wasn't satisfying to pass you on the leaderboard, but you gave me opportunity to do so. Nothing to be proud of really. If you kept playing you may have gone sub 45 seconds by now. And knowing you're more skilled than me you would take the lead again soon if you wanted to.

So yeah you should start playing again! We should both aim for a sub 50 seconds time and a TPM over 120 asap.

  17. Re: [Lockjaw] 40 Lines & 180 Seconds

Hmm... I played LJ 40 Lines today for like an hour. Avarage 55-60 seconds. Maybe that's what I get for not playing Tetris for a month or more. [IMG] But man, there are so many other great games to be played, and I recently invested in an Xbox 360. [IMG] Hm, but I should start playing more Tetris... and maybe make one of those Seinfeld chain calendar thingies that caff or someone used, for motivation. [IMG]

and have you seen these page-a-day calenders? what is the deal with that? how am i supposed to make a chain with one of these? gotta rip the page off, glue it to the wall. and of course you'll never fit them all on one wall. nooooooo. you'll have a chain going from the living room, through the kitchen, into the dining room...

    who are these calender makers?

    Re: [Lockjaw] 40 Lines & 180 Seconds

Very nice caffeine! I need a wall plate like that. Looks very practical. ^^

That's not a bad start Meroigo. That's my current level too. I think I've gone sub 55 seconds only a dozen times or so. My TPM is between 100 and 110 most of the time and I get times between 55 and 60 seconds almost all the time. Even very bad runs end up being sub 70 seconds times with a TPM over 100. Give it some time.

For me rapid progress started once I played more frequently for shorter periods of time. I limit play time to 20-30 minutes sessions, and push myself from the getgo to play at high TPM. At first I stack for tetrises as fast as possible. When this improves I start focusing on clearing lines as fast as possible without thinking too much. I'm better at the latter and most of the records I post are from this sort of gameplay.

Also I can feel when progress will be made somehow. Once I start visualizing tetris subconsiously when sleeping or when bored frequently, I know I can expect to get a little better soon. Anyone else playing imaginary tetris and trying to stack as fast as possible? I've been doing this a lot lately. Especially after I wake up and even during my sleep. I have no idea whether the field is 10x20 and what rotation system and randomizer are being used, but it sure did help me improve recently. ^^
