NES TETRIS - amateur tournament

  1. Playing at home, practicing, going for a personal best - those are all very different to competing head-to-head, where survival is key.

As a newbie I sometimes think it would be good for my game to develop a bit of a 'tourney mindset'. Too many times I build higher than I should because I know it doesn't matter, just start again. And I see that I haven't really developed my skimming and burning strategy enough.

So I was thinking...how about some amateur level competition? A tournament for people who can't really play on Level 19. For those who would be well pleased with 300k in a competitive match.

It might also be fun to watch: some of the more entertaining games are where the players are misdropping, digging, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, etc.

I've no idea how that would work. But I thought I'd float it out there.

    Cheers. :)

  2. I'm absolutely terrible at NES Tetris past the bare basics, so this sounds fun

  3. I'd probably say the Classic Tetris Monthly Community Tournament and Tetris Deathmatch would be good places to look for players who can't play consistently on Lv19. Though I would also suggest forcing yourself to play on Lv19 starts to get used to the speed assuming you're satisfied with your Lv16-18 stacking.

  4. Beginning to start on Level 19 has been really useful. I was amazed the first time I got a line, and now if I get twenty lines I'm well chuffed.

Level 19 PB is 41 lines and ONE tetris. I reckon anyone who can get five tetrises on Level 19 should be ineligible for any amateur competition. ;)

  5. Turns out there are places to play competitively: you just have to heard of young people's things like Twitch and Discord. ;)

Anyway, I wrote up a post about all that here.
