Where would you place this piece?

  1. Piece history: SIO

So I was playing a bit of Death and I was happy with the play I did here. What would you guys have done? What do you think I did?

This is probably the wrong answer, but instinctively I'd do this:

  3. DeHackEd

    DeHackEd green Gm

I'd put it where muf would but rotate 90 right. Take a single, stack remains a pyramid and the tetris hole is opened.

  4. This

    or that in panic mode
  5. Edo

    Edo a.k.a. FSY

Personally, I would most likely have used the same move as DeHackEd. However, there is nothing out of the ordinary about this move, and I suspect it's not what colour_thief actually played.

Considering the relative neatness of the stack, I'm guessing that this was quite early on in the game, maybe <200, and he had time to consider the options and perhaps even see that the next piece was an L (not in history), and go for this move:

Sure, it's a little risky, and definitely not playable at 500+, but look how neat the stack is if it works out right - definitely something to be happy about.
  6. Edo wins!

Actually, the next piece was not an L... though I did know L was outside my history. And it happened around level 250.

I shy away from the single because getting in both rotations is difficult at the fastest speeds. You pretty much have to do it before DAS kicks in, which means you've got to deliberately trigger DAS later. You've really got to plan in advance to do that efficiently. The alternative I used to do would have been this:

This effectively removes the left 2 columns from play until you do the J kick. And because you just placed a J piece, you'll have to wait a fair few pieces before getting another. But now with this new move:

You still remove the left 2 columns from play, but it's for much less time because you're waiting for an L instead of another J. I'd also argue that it's playable at 500+. The J placement is a safe (lock resetting) double tap, and the L placement is a standard IRS+DAS then rotate.
  7. Oh, and if TGM4 gives the L and J the same floor kick Ti gave T, I'd go for this move 10 times out of 10.
  8. I would do what DHE would which is probably why my TGM1/2 speeds and times aren't as fast as one might expect. I play it rather safe. However, at Death 200 speeds, and given an L as next piece, you can get the quick and easy single-triple.
  9. DeHackEd

    DeHackEd green Gm

It's not that hard to execute though. Half-precharge DAS (ie. press and hold LEFT a bit late). IRS with the A/C button. When the piece spawns (some timing is needed) hit C/A.

Visually the piece spawns half-rotated and will finish rotating as DAS kicks in sending it to its destination.

Where do you place the J? (assuming 20G speed.)

  11. This is probably not the best call, its where I'd place it in the middle of a game knowing me
EDIT: Aw man, fumen code not working?

  13. I've got to say I strongly disagree with the last 2 placements. (And muf's is impossible assuming ARS.) I'd place it here:

  14. Muf

Man, I double checked it with the rotation tables on the wiki and all :(.

Nevermind, I see it now. D'oh.
  15. tahts why we use srs :p

To be honest, I was just trying to show off with something clever like the other guys always do and ended up making a silly mistake. In reality, my placements are much simpler:

  17. Zaphod77

    Zaphod77 Resident Misinformer

Well, assume SIO was the history.

    A T, Z or I, or L is probably on the way.

either the Z and the I or the T and the L can be placed on the left.

The right can be fixed by SLO or ZJO or even just OL. Problem is th
e O and the S are in history, so it will take a while. But with a bit of luck, the stack can be recovered

I would pick the high placement and hope for the best. I'm assuming TAP here, as if this was TI i'd hold the J, as pretty much ANY other piece would be easier to place well.

Actually i'd look at the preview first. But that's probably what I'd end up doing.
  18. i would put it in the same spot as colour_thief because a hole on the far right/left is usually not that bad. Alternatively, probably rotate it 90°ccw and left once, so its on top, creating only a semi-hole that can be filled with any luck... i think thats possible^^ but i dont know if anyone would use this or just go for the simple one.

Thanks for the link to this tetris field simulation thing™ @mufunyo

The far left placement seems the less crippling.
    Now here's what really happened:

I was trying to keep my left side as clean as possible, so I missed this move, even after pausing and resigning the game, it wasn't obvious to me. Thanks for the suggestions.
