What do I need to plug tgm on my astro city ?

  1. Got definitely bored with mame so I've decided to buy the original game (still hesitating between the arcade and the 360)

I've spotted a couple of tgm1 on yahoo auctions but I don't understand a word of japanese and there seems to be the dirt cheap one and the expensive one:

I've got a sega astro city arcade cabinet with a 24Khz screen (I think) and got nothing else on it than a naomi 2 (with some games) plugged on the jamma thingy.

What is the difference between the two auctions I've mentionned ? Does the cheap one include only the game when the other one has also the zn2 thing in it ?

What will I need to play ? And moreover, does anyoned know where I can get hold of a copy of tgm 2 ?

The cheap one is just the TGM1 daughterboard, and the expensive one is both the daughterboard and the ZN2 mainboard. So yeah, you pretty much guessed it.

Because TGM1 is JAMMA, you can simply plug it into your Astro City's JAMMA harness and it will work. There's nothing fancy to accomodate more than 3 action buttons like is necessary for fighting games, but I recommend moving the guides on your joysticks into the 4-way position.

As for TGM2/TAP, good luck. You'll have to keep your eyes open if you want to find it. Also, it costs substancially more. If you have the luxury of actually being in Japan, there are shops that carry it more frequently than it turns up in online auctions.

  3. So if I buy the 1500 yens one, I can "plug and play" it without any problems ?

As for the tgm2, got a couple of friends in tokyo, osaka and nagoya.

Do you have an idea for the price range I should be expecting to pay for ?

  4. Not necessarily. You still need a ZN2 mainboard. I'm not sure, but it is possible it must be Japanese region as well. If you have this, then yes, in theory the 1500 auction is all you need. I've never personally handled a TGM1 PCB, so I don't know specifically how they connect together. It shouldn't be hard, but it's not as brainless as a CPS2/Neo Geo cartridge.

I paid over $700 for TAP. I haven't kept a close eye on things to know the going rate. The price has probably gone down a little since then (but not too much based on the last time I saw an auction).

  5. 700 bucks !!!!! [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Okay, time for me to buy a xbox 360 [IMG][IMG]

  6. I assume you already know only a Japanese region X360 can run ACE?

Also, just to manage your expectations, ACE is fun but ultimately disapointing according to those who've played it (read: not me).

Is Australia counted as Asia? it's PAL, I know that from when the Speed demo Archive wouldn't accept my Mario 64 speed run, because of some minute difference in frame rate between PAL n64 and NTSC n64. And I never did finish that speed run.

but if an Aussie xbox can play TGM ACE I will definitely get an xbox.

don't lost your time with the 1500 one.

    take the complete part !

first time i've bought TGM1, it was like the first one... totally useless if you don't know when/how to find the main board.

    just buy the complete board.

  10. Nope. Japan/Asia is still NTSC. The reason only they can play it is not some natural physical limitation, but rather artificial region locking by the publisher.

  11. What was their reasoning for this, given that it hasn't been released in other regions? Or has one just not been given?

  12. X360 games are not in and of themselves region protected. It's a "feature" that is entirely optional and up to the publisher of that particular game. Many actually choose not to use it.

As for a specific reason, none has ever been given. But it's not surprising. If you look at region compatibility lists, most Western games can play in Eastern regions but the opposite is much rarer.

*also wishes he could play Senke no Ronde*

Likewise with Dreamcast, but were there actually any region-free games licensed by Sega?
