TGM1 Sub-11 Minute GM Section Time Guideline?

Thread in 'Strategy' started by cleure, 28 Sep 2012.

  1. Is there a general guideline for section times, to get GM in under 11 minutes? I feel like I've been struggling to make improvements lately, and maybe my early section times are a bit to slow. My fastest section time for 0-100 is 1:09, but I can't seem to improve on that time for sections 100-500 (ie: I can't get better than 1:09 for 100-200, etc). I've seen players on pier21's YouTube page doing those sections in 1:00 or less, but I can't figure out what they're doing differently than me.

My average time for 0-500 is about 5:45... Fastest is about 5:20. I feel like I could get sub-11 minute if I could consistently do 0-500 in 5:20 or less...

If I can find some extra time tomorrow, I'll upload some videos for analyzing.

  3. For sub-11, you need three thing:
Don't try to get one section ultra fast, instead, play as clean as possible and do as MANY tetrises and triples as possible.
Optimize DAS, you need every tetromino that enters the playfield to be DASed if necessary.
No counterstops ! When you reach X85, don't clear lines that will make it impossible to clear at least a single at x99 (for instance, a tetris > triple combo that will make the right side of the stack flat isn't a good idea. No counterstop is very important, since you can easily loose 5 seconds on one, which will make you upset and generally end in fucking up your stack and loose even more time.

Never have a flat stack near the hole, in TGM3 it is not a problem, but for TGM it helps to have a 1 column free then 2 column free so you can clear a line with 6/7 tetriminos without hole.

  5. For optimal stacking you can also watch 777's games. 5:40+5:20 is the normal for a 11min game and you shouldn't really care about the time of the first section. I agree with the advice given above.

  6. This time is easily doable for me. It sounds like I just need to cleanup my 20G play. So maybe I should focus on making fewer mistakes in 20G, so I don't have to waste time downstacking garbage.
