  1. Tetris Wonderswan Color & Tetris Pokemon Mini

I play these two versions almost exclusively and would be interested in padding out their respective Wiki entries.

Are there any guidelines as to what I need to include?

    Great site,

  5. Are you aware that Wonderswan Tetris is an undumped game (last I checked anyways)? And would you be interested in fixing that? [IMG]

Pokemon Mini is dumped but I'll be damned if I can get that emulator working. So I've never player either game unfortunately.

I wouldn't call either rare in general... every consumer version of Tetris has a billion copies made. But they were only released in Japan, so you're right about rarity outside Japan. Though I wouldn't pay much for either really. Unless you've got really cool things to say about them. [IMG]

As for wiki guidelines, as you've probably noticed we've barely got a skeleton list of games up there. What I'd like to see is a brief description of the unique gameplay features, and any interesting historical tidbits related to the game. I prefer this VERY MUCH over the list-style information, which I think is mundane and unimportant.

BTW rumour has it you shake the PM to rotate pieces. confirm/deny?

EDIT: too many matts in this thread

Sounds intresting. Would love to check it out but like colour thief said no rom dump............yet. Also do you know if the wonderswan tetris is maxable?

  7. Hi

I paid about 20 for each game - WS from play-asia over a year ago and PM from eBay last January. I've not seen either before or since and I've been watching for a while. Somebody in Japan might have more luck! Both games definitely had limited distribution, as the WS is Japan only and for some reason PM Tetris was only released in Japan and Europe - not in AU or USA.

I think more people should play the WS version, so how would I go about dumping the ROM? It has infinite spin, ghost and quick drop. I've only recently learned about other features and terms thanks to this site so I can do more extensive testing if needed. It has 40 line mode, which employs some sort of combo builder allowing for very fast times if you get repeat Tetris. Also a 3 minute mode and marathon mode. See the Japanese site above for more game details.

The PM version is very nice and is what I'm playing at the moment. It's true that you shock the unit to flip pieces, yes. This sort of makes me not miss the hold function of WS Tetris as much. The manual says a small finger tap but I find it needs a little more than that - I hit it quickly but gently with my d-pad wrist, trying hard not to lose focus! I must look like I have a tick or something on the train of a morning. It has a weird spin/stick behaviour, tetromino and pentronimo modes, 20-line mode, Pyramid mode (make up 1, 2, 3 and 4 lines as quickly as possible) and standard/marathon mode. You also collect Pokemon by getting Tetris, but that's beside the point. Also supports Infra Red play - if you can find another copy of the game!

I'm trying for "world record" scores on these, though I have no reference of scores from anybody else for PM Tetris so it could be tricky! I have score records from the guy who programmed the WS version, which might prove hard to beat - only 3 seconds away from the theoretical shortest time!

My personal favourite is the WS version because it feels like the unit was built for it. The PM unit, on the other hand, is just to small to be played for any long lengths of time, though perhaps the game is better balanced? Thank Nintendo for that!

I'll have a go at adding to the Wiki - my first time.

jono: I'm not sure what you mean by "maxable"?

colour thief: i like your avatar - where is it from?

I chat about non-Tetris games stuff at www.wayoftherodent.com

  8. By maxable I mean the score is 999,999,999, although in most classic versions its only 999,999. Also what is the scoring system (how much is a tetris worth?), what level does the game reach before not getting any faster?

The fact that it has ultra and 40 lines makes me want to invest in one, I really should look into it

They're not rare if you know where to look. [IMG] No PM Tetris there at the moment though... but I've seen oodles go through in the past. Usually going for about 1-2 thousand Yen, including the system. Of couse, it is a bit of a hassle to buy it there, since they almost always don't ship internationally. There are actually middlemen services out there who you can pay to bid for you, and also then ship it to you after they receive it. That's a fair bit of overhead, and when all is said and done 20 pounds isn't a bad price.

This depends on where you live. I'll take a wild guess from the wayoftherodent link and say the UK?

Personally, I'd love to hear more about this. What are you speaking of exactly?

And my avatar was self made. [IMG] Thanks for the compliment.

And now for something completely different...

  10. The scoring system is explained on the Japanese page above. You can plug each page into Babelfish to get a translation. That should answer a few of your questions.

Tetris is worth 1,200 more depending on multiplier. Max score is 999,999,999. Not sure about max speed.

I did that using a Japanese-guy-from-another-forum's Mother for a copy of Guru Logi Champ (sort of like Magical Drop meets Picross). Worth the hassle after my original copy was stolen. A gem of a game. PopCap have copied it for their game Pixelus.

Or my location <- which says London [IMG] However, seeing that they can be bought I'd not go through too much bother to have it dumped.

My best score for 40-line mode is 56sec. I thought that was pretty darned good, but then I did some searching on Google Japan and found an interview where the programmer is interviewed and states his best is 41sec and he's even heard of somebody getting 31sec, which is almost as good as the theoretical fastest time of 28 seconds. Seriously fast! I picked up the game this morning and am pretty sure I can break 50sec - it's all about speeding up your brain to process the shapes faster.

Mine too. I think yours would make a great T-shirt. Maybe www.pixeltees.com or www.spreadshirt.net? I'd buy one.

Is Tetris TGM the agreed "best version ever"?

    matt

  11. just a quick heads up-- "rom dumping" is kind of a bad word in public forums, so if you extend that discussion, please do it privately. thanks.

  12. I'd say TGM is generally respected, though not universally regarded as the best. It's not for everyone, because it plays somewhat differently then most other Tetris games. Personally, I say yes, it is the best. [IMG] Well, at least starting with TGM2, that is.

    "Astonishment Swan" I love it.

I hadn't considered that actually... In fact, I'd feel a bit like a sellout. The iconic Sega red stick piece, along with the "rebellious fist", is supposed to parallel the non-standard, TGM style of gameplay. There are TTC rules that standardize a lot of Tetris, and TGM is an exception to many of them. [IMG] As a TGM player I identify with the symbol a fair bit, and it would be weird if people wore it without getting the reference. Though I guess if there's interest I could live with that irony. (BTW my sig matches my avatar in theme... In TGM3 they let you choose between the 2 rotation systems.)

I rambled on for a bit there, sorry. Maybe we should have an unofficial Tetris-based T-shirt designing contest? Perhaps once the forum has more users...

  13. Yeah, WotR is class. I've been wanting that shirt for some time now. And is it wrong that my largest temptations for gatting an Xbox 360 are TGM ACE and "anything from Jeff Minter". [IMG]

    Also, cool gingerbeard man. [IMG]

Sorry for asking, but what is this

    -Pokemon mini

    -Pokemon Shock Tetris

Are these gameboy games? Are these the same games?

First I thought that there was another Tetris game for the Wonderswan, but I think it is for Nintendo [IMG]

  15. Pokemon Mini is a system released by Nintendo.

Pokemon Shock Tetris is a game for that system.

  16. Next time just start a new topic. Two years! Geeze.

So I guess every rule has its exceptions, but nobody has ever made it easy to see where the exceptions meet the exceptions to the exceptions.

That said, why haven't I seen even the Pokemon Mini hardware in stores? Was it only released in Japan and New York City?

  18. You got me there. But still, two years...

  19. tepples: I saw it in Sweden for a short amount of time, distributed by Bergsala, the ones that distribute Nintendo stuff in Sweden.
