Greetings. I was wondering if anyone here caught word about some Tetris DS tournament being held in Hawaii early in November. I've personally only heard about it from a friends but never actually had it confirmed to me. I'm also asking because the prizes are too good for it to be just a local tournament. So I assume people from the mainland will be coming down for it. So I was wondering if anyone elase knows about it..

  3. If I could raise anything like the money I'd need to get to Hawaii, I'd be there, but there's no way I can get my hands on money like that.

Hawaii seems an odd place, unless they're only really expecting people from Japan or America, because it basically inconveniences everyone.

it's wear tetris games are born.

  5. Correction- It's where the rightsholders reside, and may examine the games which themselves are born around the world (including but not limited to Hawaii), and approve or deny them.

  6. but it's definitely the tetris capital, and not just the right-holders live there. producers and developers too.

  7. Japan is totally the "tetris capital". I bet that territory often creates more tetris games per year than the rest of the world combined. And it's got the consumer demand t match it. [IMG]

  8. So? Producers and developers of Tetris games live everywhere in the world where the games are made. Of all those places, the thing unique to Hawaii (and the thing that might qualify it as being the "capital", whatever that is) is the existence of the original rightsholders.

If there are wireless routers on the beach, then we would get wifi. Honestly, the prizes are so high-scale that I didn't believe it at first. Prizes' monetary value cap out at near $5000. But after doing more research, I've found out that this tourney is only open to students at the university that I attend. Even more so for me to find this odd. But hey with that in mind, I could win some nice swag. Seeing as there's only one guy that I find to be competition at the university. But I still find it odd.

I may not be ub3r like most of the guys here, but with an average 7300 rating, I think it'll be ample to take first if that were my intention. But with the circumstances dealt, I plan to fall into third place just for that specific prize so I can give it to a friend, as the other prizes don't interest me much.

  10. $5000? I'd fly to Hawaii for that tournament. Too bad about the students only, though.

You really think Japan plays more games of Tetris than USA?

  11. I do. It seems far bigger over there than in the USA, where it is in turn more popular than in Europe. Maybe the TGM series is a decent reason for that, but I think it is nevertheless.

I reckon if you were to hold a Tetris world championships, Japan would win it pretty much hands-down.

  12. Probably depends on the ruleset. They'd probably win in ARE-based 20G matches but I doubt Japan would win if the game used was Quadra or something.
