TDS 4-player targeting -- who and why?

A topic recently came to mind I'd like to get a general community idea on.

What does it take before you start targeting a single player as opposed to just making Tetrises/T-Spin doubles/triples and letting it hit whoever?

Obviously, if you see a lot of stuff coming to you from the same player, you're going to want to punish them for it and will usually target back. But are there other times you usually target -- based on rank? Previous history with a player? # of wins that player got in your current matchup? (e.g. same player has won 3 games, attempting to target them so they don't win a fourth)

Likewise, are there any times you specifically DON'T hit a player with something -- such as a "reward" for having a humorous nickname, or one that shows similar interests? (e.g. my username is that of a Pokemon, so if I see someone with another Pokemon name, I deliberately try to make sure that player is the last other player left if possible)

  2. On the top screen you have a cursor moving between your opponents, you just have to time it so you clear lines as the cursor is targeting the one you want to send the garbage to.

    It's that simple.

  3. Uhh... we know that.

Generally I don't target through principle. If the game is clean, I won't do anything. I see it like Snaking in MKDS. I'll not do it, because I see it as sort of spoiling the nature of the game. However, if I play against someone who snakes, I have no choice but to fight fire with fire.

Same deal for targeting. If someone else is doing it, I don't have much choice but to return it. Usually it slows you down, so I keep it to a minimum. However, online people tend to target the highest player, usually me. If it's one person, I can handle it, and I'll just maybe target him a bit. Occasionally you'll get two or three bastards who'll team up on you. When this happens there's not much you can do other than die, or quickly notice what's going on, and target their asses to pick them off one by one. I find that happens a lot less frequently now than it used to a few months ago, which is good.

I do however keep an active eye on the top screen. It helps to warn when stuff is going to come your way, to see cheaters quickly, to attain a general skill level of opponents (speed, t-spins and such) and also to perhaps target a specific Tetris. I used to deliberately finish someone off by targeting them with a Tetris if I found I only had to wait a second or two, and they were right at the top. Then I changed into the moral that they usually die anyway, so there's no point wasting 4 garbage lines. Now I'm moving back into my old train of thought that it's best to kill them off, especially the better players, who have a knack of recovering and coming back.

I never spare people garbage for names alone or anything (except X.ALONSO, who I deemed to be a fellow Liverpool F.C. fan). I did anti-target people who I know, either from TC or somewhere else. However, I stopped that a week or two ago. Firstly it was down to you Mewtwo, I played a few games with you, and spent too much time avoiding sending you garbage, and too little time watching my own back. The clincher was when I killed myself trying to avoid sending garbage to someone I thought I knew from TEC, and it turns out they use a different wifi name, so I sort of handicapped myself for nothing.

I no longer avoid sending garbage to TC players (I don't target them either though) as I figure they should be good enough to handle whatever comes their way themselves.

  4. Sorry, I wrote that early this morning and somehow my brain interpreted the "who" as "how". I genuinely thought he was asking how to do it, because it's a pretty common question on various forums.

Again, sorry. I should've read it more closely.

  5. I don't play 4p much (2p: 837 matches; 4p: 306), but when I look at the second screen (which don't happen very often) and see someone who is about to lose and/or I got a lighting, I try to finish him.

  6. Lightning applies to everyone, though, so that's not really targeting.

has anyone ever tried "teaming up?" i've thought about joining worldwide at the same time with a friend to see if we would be placed in the same game, but haven't gotten anyone to do it so far. not necessarily to target people though.

as far as targeting goes, like PetitPrince i haven't played much 4 player worldwide (around 100 games). when i do play, i'm really just focused on what i'm doing rather than watching the other players. maybe this is why my rating goes down every time i play 4 player [IMG] however, i did target Caithness in a 4 player friend match when he invited two others who were less experienced. sorry about that Caith [IMG]

  9. Back in the heyday of blockstats IRC, when I had my old house, myself, Millartime, cosmonaut and Caithness used to regularly play worldwide 4p simultaneously, and because we're all relatively high skilled, and the way the match system works, we found ourselves playing each other quite regularly. And yes, we would team up against certain good players we were matched against.

You're sure on this? I swore it hit 1 person. Wow, I r noob if this is true.

  11. Then u r n00b, cause it is.

All weapons of wifi affect everyone except for the ones that affect you.

Off-line Multiplayer is where they don't affect everyone.

  12. Mmm, I'm pretty sure the banana only affects one person. All the others, though, yeah.

  13. On wifi, it definitely affects everyone.
