Radica's PlayTV Legends Family Tetris

  1. I've been thinking about buying one of these. My local K-Mart has them for $24.95, cheapest/average online prices (for new) were $19.95 plus shipping (which the total cost would prolly be more than if I simply bought it at K-Mart).

    Anyhow, has anyone bought one of these/have any comments/reviews/tips? What's the in-game music like? How does the controller and overall gameplay "feel"?

  2. Didn't this used to have a square you would physically rotate/use as a joystick for the controller? That really didn't work well, but it's not what I'm seeing here. Am I confused?

    My employer had the one with the square joystick in the rec room, and I asked to borrow it over the weekend. The control wasn't very responsive, and it wasn't all due to the joystick. DAS delay was way too short for the rate, making it difficult to control where each tetromino moved. The Korobeiniki rendition also felt off, as if there were some sort of bug in the music engine causing repeat to come one note late. It all felt like some poorly tuned fan game.

    This "Family Tetris" is newer than the one with the square joystick.

  4. I went ahead and bought the one at K-mart... they had it on clearance for $10.00 -:) This one is like a standard gamepad.

    I had researched and looked for the original that y'all mentioned (the one with the cube tet. joystick thing -> PlayTV Arcade Legends Tetris -> http://gear.ign.com/articles/545/545728p1.html ), as I thought maybe I could control that one better (I could use my right hand for control -> Re: my posts in this thread -> http://www.tetrisconcept.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=623 ), but like Tepples replied, most of the reviews I had read on the Internet about that one said that control was extremely poor, and it was prone to quickly wearing out.

    One thing that I would have liked better with the older cube-stick unit is that the graphics were more standard... not cartoonish like the Family Tetris (newer updated) version. Anyhow, I had no luck finding the original, and after finding the newer one on clearance at K-Mart, I couldn't pass it up. Once you get over the toonish graphics look to it, it actually plays (and controls) quite nicely -:) One thing that it lacks though (that's in the original version but not this newer one) is hot-line mode.

    BTW, the music in this one loops fine... it has Korobeiniki and Kalinka for the in-game tunes, and one that I can't remember the name of for the main-menu (although I recognize the song). Sound effects are OK in this one, and a few I think are digital samples.

    Anyways, not a bad deal for ten bucks... just wish that I could turn off those Saturday morning cartoon graphics <LOL>! Hehe, might be time to rip out my digital camera, and create a few new skins for LJ <G> -:)

    (Edit) P.S. (re: toon-graphics) From this web page (the developers/programmers) -> http://www.hiscore.tv/promo_tetris.html :

    Compare to the graphics of the older cube-stick version (pics from the IGN link -> http://gear.ign.com/articles/545/545728p1.html ):

  5. BTW, does anyone else have one of these units? If so, what are some of your best times/scores?

    (Edit - new times) I myself can only muster 2:23 in 40-line "Race" mode (using 4-block tets).

    (Edit - new times) ...and 179,850 in "Marathon" mode (again, using 4-block tets).
