Puyo Puyo Tetris was announced as part of the line-up at AnimEVO, a well-established series of side tournaments at the Evolution Championship Series fighting game event held July 14-16 in Las Vegas, NV. Kiyobi is going to be the tournament organizer for PPT. There is some on-going discussion regarding format (particularly mode selection) on this post on /r/Tetris.
1v1 Versus makes it look like there will be guideline tetris predominant matches. It's a shame, I was getting more and more interested in Puyo Puyo. In any case it's likely that I'll spectate from Paris
Hey, it's me, Kiyobi, coming in to reach out for opinions. It's been a while since the announcement, my apologies. As it stands, there will be two brackets: One for Versus mode and one for Swap mode. The tournament will be officially run on Playstation 4, but tourney matches may be commenced on Switch only if both players agree to it. Both tournaments will be double elimination. Each match will consist of best 2 out of 3 games, 2 out of 3 rounds, with the exception of Winners Finals, Losers Finals, and Grand Finals, which will be 3 out of 5 games. After each game, the loser may opt to switch between Puyo and Tetris. Since characters don't matter, both winner and loser may change characters at will after any game. I do have an important discussion topic I'd like to lead this thread off with. I've been talking to the Puyo Nexus community about including hard drop for Puyo, which is off by default. I was considering enabling this for AnimEVO and was met with a general consensus of "Puyo VS Tetris is not fun anyway; the Versus bracket will just be full of Tetris mirror matches." So, I'd like to ask you guys, would you still enter if I dropped Versus and ran only Swap for AnimEVO? Is being forced to play Puyo Puyo enough of a deterrent to keep you from entering?
I am not attending ( ) but I think swap but would be fine if versus got dropped. It sort of balances the scales in that players weak in Tetris but strong in Puyo can still but up good fights. There is already an advantage to being good at tetris in regular versus. Also it can lead to exciting things when the swaps happen. Gotta think about the potential hype/clips.
I'm planning on learning Puyo either way, but I do want to play Versus as well if it's possible to have both.
