Next Level TAP Play: SPC et al.

Thread in 'Discussion' started by user401730, 29 Sep 2024.

  1. I happened by MHL's theabsolute.plus the other day and was blown away by the skill SPC has achieved: 7 minute orange GM.

Please find here a thread to discuss the general TAP triumphs of recent years.
What contributes to this fabulous success?
How do next level players understand and think about our puzzle?
Are there perhaps key insights we would like to record here as important?

All glory to the victorious masters, and here's to our right to challenge the realm of god.
    GG !

  2. As far as I know, the best single day in recent years contained 3 new players earning the Orange Gm rank (I'll come back with the date). To me that suggests the community as a whole is cycling virtuously. Gamers generally all would seem to be better stronger faster at the end of 2024, but within the TAP community in particular it's easy for me to imagine stronger vods and feedback and interactions feeding into still stronger play.

It's a little bit awkward to try and give a general taxonomy of success.
Here are my guesses: It's mostly hard work.
I wouldn't be surprised by a tiny or small contribution coming from the input mechanism. Every little bit helps.
And I would think a big chunk is understanding the puzzle more clearly. Has there been any formal work? My impression is that there are some hundreds of game states which can be safely and aggressively cycled through. The boundary for that safe space would be one frame; it is in fact a moderately challenging puzzle. Memorizing puzzle solutions is not a bad strategy if there's only some hundreds. Is that what happened? I feel like I know a bunch of game states maybe 100% correctly. There are many familiar histories and topographies, and sometimes they align such that i'm very certain about a play.

Looking at our board here I see that the new TAP Master WR is not the jump I imagined a few days ago, but only a handful of seconds over .jp in 2018. https://tetrisconcept.net/threads/tap-master.24/ The level of domination over the puzzle is really excellent. Let's get everyone over the Orange Gm line =]

  3. The level of understanding i'm supposing in my last post is unrealistic and calls to mind the memory palace master roll nonsense.
It's also shallow. The pieces dealt out are fixed from the seed so in a TAS setting you'd just want to reason about the definite list.

Feels like TA DEATH could be cleared with secret grade S7 or a well height of 4. There are plenty of ways to make line clears.

Anywho here's hoping a better player comes along and enlightens us o/
