Mario in Tetris Land ! (experimental gameplay)

Thread in 'Discussion' started by herc, 29 May 2007.

  1. hell. another missdrop. just placed that "beloved" S piece in a way forming a perfect hole. if i only could move it a few cells left. but no way, its blocked... no problem for mario. he is a great jumper and masters each platform. and now - no longer a problem for me [IMG]

    test gameplay:

(warning: prototype, may have many bugs)

i know... most of you will hate me for this [IMG] , but remember: there are still some casual tetris gamers left on the world, and they probably will like this (but who knows...)

    any comments, flames etc welcome!

Haha, the gameplay sure is funky. Applying TDS's dual screen concept literally I see... [IMG]

  3. I have no idea what I'm looking at.. care to explain? Pieces can jump, and get mirrored, where's the challenge?

  4. well... the challenge...

i may sound a bit like henk rogers with his infinite spin, but the challenge is still there: you loose time by doing a jump:

you most TAP a key, DAS does not make the jump. so you must release the key, decide that you want to jump, do the jump by bumping the playpiece into the obstacle and maybe repeatedly bump into to jump higher.

so certainly it has its cost to jump.

about the "mirroring" (in fact an 180 rotation) -- i think thats also not too trivial, as you must press another key. i think this rather adds complexity than makes it easier.

but the most important thing is: all this stuff is OPTIONAL. you just do not need to use it. if you want to play fast - just ignore it.

its the same with floor kicks. you do not need to kick, but sometimes it just helps.

anyhow: the whole idea stems from the problem with sega piece orientations, where you in 20g mode sometimes really often get stuck. with such a jump you could escape such a situation.

maybe it will make overall gameplay a bit (or a lot?) easier, but not if you want to be fast. then nothing changes and you probably will avoid jumping and mirror rotations and the gravity gun.

and by the way - that video is just demonstration.. surely no one would play that bad. not even me.

sure, what's the harm if it helps a beginner. maybe they'll put a piece in a bad spot but then recognize where they should have put it. the next time they're in a similar situation they'll get it right the first time. i think everyone wants to get faster and more precise the more they play and they won't want to waste time with jumping. it is a lot like infinite spin in TDS.

  6. just want to note: jumping is not infinite, it is based on lock reset, and thats limited to 20 with linear decreasing lock delay. (20 = 500ms (but the 500 becomes lower in higher levels), 10 = 250ms etc)

and of course you can disable all that in my options dialog. (you can set pus-power, number of jumps, entry delay to zero etc )

Maybe I'm just thinking of this because of the time spent with Grow Tetris, but it seems like this would be quite good in any "much nastier than the original Tetris" mode. This addition will add a lot of playability to the idea of, say, 20g Growtris.

...which I really want to try now, having said it.

  8. @air_gear:

i have compiled a special 20g version of grow-tetris for you:

    http://www.coreloop.com/dump/growtris_20g.exe

entry delay is 500 ms, i.e. quite long. but you can adjust entry delay, line clear delay etc under options->player settings->gameplay.

please note, that jumping only happens if you tap again against an obstacle. i have also changed the push-behaviour: pushing a piece with the current play-piece is now only possible if you hold down the push-key. in expert key settings, this is the left alt key directly beneath space.

have fun with those monster pieces [IMG]
i personally cannot survive above level 10. (10 cubes per piece). and this was in 1G.

please tell me how long you did stand.. ah and by the way: recording a video goes with key F12. but choose a fast codec, for example picvideo motion jpeg.

Whoa, sweet, thank'ee. I did NOT expect that. Let me say, though...this is as evil as expected, though the jumps, floor kicks, flips, and such seem to make it playable at least through the "up to 7" level. Grow Death: I like. Of course, I need to reacquaint myself with the flips before any good playing comes up; I tried twice and made it to 3 each time. Note that this is with a 100ms ARE (which may still be too high). A video? Well, that'll happen when level 5 or higher is realistic...maybe a silver/gold block or two, also.

To everyone else: you have to try this. This is absurd. [IMG]

I'd play it, and I think it was very cute, tho' I couldn't hear sound, but imagining the Mario 'jump' sound with the J-piece trying to jump was hilarious.

But sadly, don't think I can play it. My PC would crap itself.

  11. @sihumchai: could you please post / pm me your system specs? (soundcard / onboard sound, prozessor, memory, operating system etc)? i want to nail down the audio problems.

and i dont understand exactly the phrase "My PC would crap itself" ? sure, gravytris needs way too much of processor / graphicscard power... sorry for that.

I couldn't hear sound because I was at work actually.

And regarding my PC crapping(crashing) itself, I think it's a matter of hardware difficulties. Just a few example of what crashes my comp:

    - doing nothing (random)

    - running graphic heavy games

    - trying to view a folder full of pictures in thumbnail mode (lame, I know)

    - youtube videos (even WMP can crash my PC)

    - Zinc/Mame

Funny thing is, Heboris works flawlessly. But LJ crashes. I haven't tested GRavytris yet because I know it WOULD crash my PC and would crash my hopes of having fun. But I would try it out later and let you know if it runs on my PC.

And regarding the graphic-heavy gravytris, it's ok, it looks great! Looking forward to try it out.

Does memtest86 crash anything? And have you put thermometers in your PC to see if heat is being removed properly?

  14. tepples is right: most probably its a thermal problem.

it is very often that the cpu fan is not working properly. i had a friend, whose cpu cooler was half fallen of the motherboard. these days the coolers are so heavy, that they easily break off their anchors on the motherboard...

or: just heavy dust. i have to remove dust once a year from my cooler.

Heat huh, always thought it had something to do with the power supply. But I'll try memtest and see what results I get.

And dust? This PC was recently assembled(with random old parts) by a friend of mine. So I don't think dust is a problem, but more of 'which' hardware is faulty.

    Thanks guys.
