In-Flight Tetris

  1. Played this game today, and I must say, it really is a travesty.

    The game is from 2004, produced by DTI Software, and uses SRS colors and the guideline randomizer. It looks like an ordinary cookie-cutter guideline game, until you see the controls:

    Left/Right = Move

    Up/Down = Rotate

    Y = Soft Drop

    B = Hard Drop

    This is clearly the worst control scheme imaginable. And as if that wasn't bad enough, the pieces don't even spawn the same way they do in the preview box (L, J, I are vertical, T is upside-down), unless you swap it in from the hold box.

    Also, I don't know what rotation system the game uses, but no way is it SRS. Wallkicks are just weird, an I against the wall will rotate, but if you rotate again it will go right back to the wall, which contradicts rotating it in free space, and it seems that the T doesn't even have wallkicks (I didn't text that extensively though)

    The game has some options, you can choose to start on level 0-9 (9 is hardly fast) You can choose 1 preview or 6 (6 is default), you can turn Hold on and off, you can choose "Classic Lockdown" which is actually lock delay that won't reset just by moving or rotating, turn it off and you can extend the lock time infinitely.

    DAS exists in the game but it's pretty slow, though it's not like pressing left/right rapidly on the handset is any better. Soft drop and Hard drop both lock the piece instantly.

    You can play against other people in the flight, I lost two games because for some reason, the DAS speeds up a lot in VS games, and it doesn't take long for it to start, which results in a "slippery pieces" effect, which makes misdropping all too easy. Garbage is simple, 2 lines = 1 garbage, 3 lines = 2 garbage, 4 lines = 4 garbage, T-spins are not rewarded (no special message, nothing) and there is no music.

    I don't know if it was the same, but i played a similar version on a Malaysian Airlines flight. Bastard Tetris [IMG]. But it's cool that you can play it against other people. I played battleships and watched the weird in flight shows mostly.

  3. and you cannot change that weird keyboard layout?

    and how does it work? is it a game you can play while sitting in an airplane? how do you play? on what device?

  4. this flight had a video screen + handset/controller for each seat. Tetris was one of the selectable games. No, you can't change the controls.

    You forget the complimentary broken headphones!

  6. At least their headphones didn't makes my ears hurt after wearing them for just 10 minutes.

  7. I heard about this today from someone else, who isn't a Tetris fanatic, and they thought it was pretty good.

    Evidently it's different for the casual players than it is for the hardcore.

  8. no. it is good for them, because they do not know better. i even programmed a tetris clone (gravytris - wich is still lacking) and thought it was quite good. that was before i found this forum. now i know a lot more about tetris, played a lot more and especially well designed tetrises and only now i can feel and tell the difference between a good and a average tetris implementation...
