  1. ...That the top player in Tetris DS wifi, "TGM-ARIKA" aka Mihara the creator of TGM, has just lost 0-41 against Jin8, who is one of the strongest players at TGM. That's right, 41 consecutive losses.

Brace for impact. TDS comes out in Japan on the 27th.

Has anyone played Jin8/TGM-HoLiC.? I haven't bumped into him yet (luckily for me, I'm sure), but his rating is an astounding 9258. I heard he has been seen playing 4-player.

i've played extensively against both ARIKA (mihara) and HOLiC.

I played about 10 games against HOLiC with two high 6xxx players and myself and we got WOMPED. HOLiC didn't make ANY mistakes and he is lightning fast. I almost felt priviliged to lose just so i could watch him. He moves so fast that his pieces seem to show up as clumps, like 3 tetraminos at a time. When we played him he was at 9039 and after 10 games he improved to 9046.

I've played about 50-60 (4 player) games against ARIKA (i have not seen him as mihara yet) and if several of us teamed up against him we could definitely have defeated him. He would repeatedly let his screen get to 80%+ full but would inevitably make a comeback (we never beat him, but this was when i was just a 68-6900 player and it was before i knew about targeting garbage). He's very very good but he makes mistakes.

I can consistently beat the computer level 5 and these guys seem to operate at a level that can be considered flawless. seriously ridiculous. i don't stand a chance, and i probably never will.

I ran into him once when he was at about 8400. It was 3 in the morning and when his name flashed my heart rate doubled. I beat him first game and was in kind shock. The win netted me over 100 points. He then beat me twice and quit. Losing with that many points must suck so much. I think that I would freak out. Anyways, thats all Ive seen of him, 3 measly games. I have also only played TGM ARIKA one set, a bit longer I came up quite short going 3-22. The holic win I will forever cherish.

  9. I just played 3 or 4 games against Holic today on 4-player (guess he can cope against weapons) and he didn't actually seem that good. Though I admit he must be awesome to get a rating of 9500 his speed wasn't too impressive. I almost beat him on one game when we were the last two but i screwed up and misdropped - thats why his rating is so high: he never makes mistakes. He was only a little faster than most players around 7000 but he didn't make a mistake once the whole time I was watching

I got some (poor) footage which i'm working on getting online.

i am JEALOUS! you just played him? like 10:45 eastern time? (aren't you in england? -- i know england isn't in the eastern time zone... GMT just means nothing to me)

I wonder how long it will be before he tops 10,000... i like that he keeps pressing on even after TGM-Master (is that guy still a known cheat?) sorta topped out at 9300, ha!

  11. About 3pm in England so... yeah, about 10pm in Japan. That's not surprising though - I play most of my Tetris in the evening if there's nothing on TV

    Edit: Got the video here

Warning: It is of extremely poor quality. Holic is the player on the far left

My digital camera is pretty old and doesn't shoot vids very well. After watching the video Holic is actullay faster than I thought first time around. I would have got more footage but I have no way of supporting my camera without using my hands so I could only get footage when I lost.

About 3/4 of the way through the video he also uses the abusement to the T-spin where TDS counts it as one even though it shouldn't be.

  12. thanks for the vid. amazing how well he rapid fired off those i's. mind if i were to front page it?

  13. not at all. If you can stand the poor resolution

That was pretty nuts. His blocks always seem to make their mark so quickly. I always misdrop when I try playing really fast.

Something seems off about his playing style. When I vs. him before in two player, I did not notice the hesitation he seemed to be having like in the video. Also, his downstacking was a bit sloppy in comparison. Judging from the video nicholas made of him vs. ARIKA, I would say that ARIKA was faster on average and more efficient in his techniques. From the video, HOLiC seems as though he can be topped out by continuous BtBs or by the occasional 7,500+ players.

  16. i wouldn't compare 1v1 with ffa play. the other players and items add more things to consider when playing. another thing-- it's not like he was playing anyone in the top 50-- no one really even close to him. i'd suspect you'd see much sharper play if he was up against someone closer to him 1v1. another thing to consider-- you can only go so fast in tds. i don't think much speed seperates him from the 8000ers, if any.

  17. I played TGM-HOLiC once in Push mode, but he left after beating me just once, which confused me a bit. Surely 73xx is a a high enough score to be worth his time leeching a bit off of? I'm fairly certain he wasn't worried that I'd actually beat him.

If I got that high, I'd only be playing one match a piece verses people.

Due to just some basic laws of attrition, the more I'd play against someone, the more likely they're going to sneak in a hit. Playing each person just once without them getting an idea of my strategies and playing styles strengthens my chances for keeping that rating.

  19. It must be rare that he faces someone over about 6800, though. I know I try to take advantage of the chance to gain more than just a few points per win when i come across someone with a pretty good score but who I can still easily beat.

  20. Maybe HOLiC wasn't trying too hard when he played me, or Tetris DS is harder to be fast at than TGM, but judging from the 14 minute Arika Skills video HOLiC isn't even the best guy out there (unless that is HOLiC himself).
