Hi TetrisConcept forum, my nickname is serhef and I decided to join your community to find out more about my favorite puzzle game of all time. 1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? I played Tetris since childhood, but not the real (licensed) one. In Russia we had a lot of chinese devices, called "Brick Game". Very often it had labels like "9999 in 1", pointing on 9999 games in it, which was a lie, of course. It had very simple games played on it's dot matrix screen, like clones of Snake, Frogger, some lame racing game, something with tanks, Simon says and some more. But the main one was, of course, Tetris with it's many variations. For example there was a variotion, where all the figures are shifted right every move or a variation, where you can morph a figure into any figure you want (of course it was one of the popular mode for my friends, because you can simply turn all the pieces into I-shaped pieces). That's where my journey (not quite interesting journey) in the lands of Tetris began. Then I played Tengen TETЯIS on my Famicom-clone called "Магистр Гений (Magister Genius)" with my mom. She said that I was quite good at this game. That had a very strong influence on me so that game was one of my favorite games on that system. Both of these devices are still up and running, which is almost a miracle (these products were "famous" because of their poor quality). I had a Nokia 5130 with Tetris Revolution by EA on it. Actually, I completed it to 100% in main menu. This was the first game, where I saw T-Spins and other new elements, such as Hold feature and the Ghost Piece. So right now I'm playing Tetris for 15 years, but I'm not doing it regularly, just when my heart really "asks" for it. I'm not a good player, and I never thought that I was good. 2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play? Right now I have Tetris on my PSP and Android phone, but I find touch controls not that good for handling a fast-paced game such as Tetris. I knew about some arcade Tetrises but knew that I'll never get them at my house. Now I know about emulators and can at least try TGM series. After some lurking I found out about Heboris and NullpoMino so I tried them too. After awesome performance at AGDQ'15 I played them every day, but not that much (because I don't have much time). So with the help of these games I found out that I suck a lot 3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ) keep you busy? I'm a beginner speedrunner, I tried to do runs of GTA: Vice City but failed at it miserably. I like to play games with my friends, even singleplayer games while talking with them on Skype. 4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy? I played Puyo Puyo and Columns at good old Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. 5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept? Shoutouts to AGDQ 2015 Tetris block Excuse me for my bad English and thank you for reading my reply!
Nice serhef! At least we have people from where it all somehow began! ... Kinda want to see what a Magister Genius looks like haha welcome!
I'll probably be making more posts in here, so I might as well introduce myself. 1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? I've been playing Tetris casually my entire life, so it's difficult to say. But really, who hasn't? It started out as a kid when I got ahold of that old DOS version (probably "v3.12"?), but even weird versions like a port for the TI-82 calculator and Tetrinet has been a part of my history. But I didn't start playing competitively until early last year, when a friend of mine picked up NES Tetris and starting going for the high scores. In trying to keep up with him, I had to pretty much purge everything I thought I knew about Tetris and change my habits and play style completely, in order to stack consistently for tetrises. I'm still not very good though. 2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play? I'll play any version, but I personally prefer TGM2, even though I'm not good at it. I've never really played intensely, but since I just bought myself an actual PCB, I'm set to start practicing more, hoping to get somewhere. 3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ) keep you busy? Anything. I have a collection of around 1400 console and arcade games, and I don't like to limit myself to specific genres or eras. Growing up though, it's mainly been platformers, adventure games, RPGs, and in later years, shoot'em ups and arcade stuff. Huge fan of anything Castlevania, Mario, or Mega Man, but all time favourites are probably Final Fantasy 6, Super Metroid and Rainbow Islands. 4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy? Always been a big fan of Puyo Puyo. 5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept? Last year when I decided to play Tetris more "seriously", I looked up a lot of strategies for effective stacking etc. online, and Tetrisconcept was a name I'd often come across, as well as the names of several members in here. Though I've come across the name a few times before, like some years back when I decided to look into what that TGM thing was all about after some people were raving about it on the shmups forum (system11.org) Also, I've been talking a bit with Muf lately, about a streaming setup for the PAL NES Tetris competition in March here in Denmark, and it seems a few people from in here are gonna participate, so I'm looking forward to seeing those people.
Hi there! I'm mostly known as Boingloing to the Tetris community. I've been a hard drop member since 2009 and I realized I should probably post here too . Two statistics that I've been working on improving are: 40 Lines time (nullpo): 26.51 TGM1 best grade: S4 1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? I started playing tetris because it was a very satisfying game. The skill curve wasn't too intimidating for a kid, I could feel myself learning each time I played. The first time I played was way back, like most people, but I started playing a lot when I was around 11-12 years old (so like 7 years ago). Do I consider myself a great player? Hell no, but I consider myself pretty good 2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play? I've played lots of tetris games over the years. The ones I've logged the most time in are Tetris DS, NullpoMino, and TF I suppose. I go through spurts of playing a lot, and I had a period of like 2 years where I was basically retired for hardware reasons, but these days I usually play at least 2 hours per day, typically on nullpo. I've also recently started to play some more Texmaster and NES tetris because I want to get better at them. 3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ) keep you busy? I mostly just play Tetris and Stepmania all day but I've kinda been in many other video game communities. I've dabbled in Puyo on Puyo Nexus for a while. I tried GGPO and Street Fighter Alpha 2 (I sucked at that), Age of Empires II is a recently rekindled favorite, I like playing Smash Bros but I don't like going to tournaments anymore, played osu! for a while, Dance Dance Revolution is one of my biggest games to play, I speedrun Super Monkey Ball and Pokemon Puzzle League from time to time. That's the gist of it. 4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy? Yep! I really like Panel De Pon/Puzzle League games but I'm not phenomenal at them. And like I said, I tried Puyo but that was sort of a fruitless effort. 5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept? I've known about TC for years. In fact, I thought I had an account here until I tried to log into it a few days ago. I never made one, but I'd read the forums from time to time. With the sudden (pardon my gross slang terms) hype surrounding TGM at the moment, I thought it'd be a good idea to try to hop into the conversation and participate where I can.
1. I started playing Tetris because my sisters were so much better than me when I was little. I had the drive to get better at around 11 years old when I got Tetris DS. I guess I have been playing Tetris for five years, but not constantly. I sort of have periodic game obsessions so at times I would be bored of Tetris for a long while. Then, I'd come back into it. Then, stop. It's just a repeating process. I consider myself to be amazing in comparison to all the people that witnessed my Tetris skills, but of course, the TGM 3 Invisible Tetris video on Youtube proved me otherwise. Now I feel like trash lol . I can only get to S1 consistently in TGM1. 20G just eats me apart. 2. Currently, I'm obsessed with the TGM series. I would go to Nullpomino sometimes, but I that game just doesn't control the same as the TGM series. Is there lag? I think it's lag....I can feel it when pulling of Zangi moves. I also play Tetris Battle ONLY because I love wrecking real people. Tetris DS hasn't caught my attention for a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time (maybe I should try it out again...). 3. My first real step into competitive gaming was actually Super Smash Bros Melee. That game (and its community) has in the past year EXPLODED in popularity. It's NUTS. That game is just crazy fast and competitive. It's exhilarating to play and marvelous to watch. I completely recommend watching The Smash Brothers documentary on Youtube. It goes over the competitive history of Melee and its famous players in 9 episodes. Absolutely amazing. I also love playing Smash 64. Occasionally, I try out speedrunning Mario 64 but that almost never goes well. 4. Tetris Attack / Planet Puzzle League. I'm not particularly great at those games but I enjoy them nonetheless. 5. I actually came to this website years ago like in '09 or something from the Tetris Concept Wiki while searching up Tetris abbreviations like SRS, ARS, IRS, etc. It was interesting seeing people converse about the same games that they love, but it didn't catch my attention. This year in AGDQ, Tetris Concept was mentioned a few times in the TGM runs, so I thought "Okay, now this is officially important". SO, here I am.
Welcome guys! Funny how people are into Smash Bros, more especially Melee... I guess at some point we should have a TV ready for anyone willing to play some games! Also people playing NES Tetris makes me wanna go to CTEC... I guess I'll find a way!
Dude, you gotta go Like I posted about in the thread, I'm aiming to set up TGM at the place too, so you can get your fix.
1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? When I was born, my mother had an extended hospital stay. My dad had purchased her a Gameboy with Tetris to help pass the time, and Tetris had been in my house in some for ever since! I've played some form of tetris for pretty much as long as I can remember; but I definitly would not consider myself a great player. Working on changing that, though! 2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play? I'm currently going hard on TGM1, shooting for GM! Been trying to play an hour or so a day. I used to play a lot of Tetris DS(maxed score a couple of times,) and played a lot of the gross Tetris Axis for awhile(I think i was consistently top 10 in one of the ranked modes until it released in Japan.) 3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ) keep you busy? Bemani! I collect music arcade games. Current line up is Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Freaks, Drummania, a ghetto Pop'n converted from a KBM, a ghetto IIDX converted from a BMIII, Pump it Up Pro, and a beatmania The FINAL. 4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy? I've always enjoyed puzzle league, and every now and then i'll go stupid hard on Blocksum for like...a week. 5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept? I've found the wiki via google and have used it on and off for years. I just really want to say thank you to everyone who ran TGM at AGDQ, I had played some TGM on and off for years(kitaru actually had posted about it on a bemani forum which led me to get into it,) and AGDQ reminded me of it's existence. I had recently lost my father, and daily TGM has helped me through this tough time immensely. It's kept me busy and my mind off things and has really helped to keep me sane, so thank you guys c:
Hello! 1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? I started playing Tetris on the original Game Boy in the early 90s and have been playing ever since. So, I've been playing for over 20 years. I would consider myself a good player, but not yet a great player, just someone who keeps trying to improve. 2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play? I mostly play the Sprint and Dig Challenge modes in Nullpomino. I probably play on average at least 30 minutes a day. I am wanting to get into the TGM games. I don't know of any place near me to play any of the TGM games. 3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ) keep you busy? I play various tabletop games as well as the Portal games. I also enjoy a number of retro NES and SNES games. 4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy? Not really any at the moment. 5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept? I've come across it on Google and I've heard it mentioned on some Tetris videos online including AGDQ. I did just buy a TGM1 board, but I don't really know what else I will need to get in order to make it playable. But I'm sure I will get there.
Greetings, Tetris players! I am Maka, I have been on this site before but since I've just come back such a long time later I decided to post here. 1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? Can't really say why I started playing any Tetris game in general, BUT one day many years ago I saw the infamous "tetris_japan_finals" video and wanted to play THAT specific game. I noticed many of the quirks of the game not found in many Tetris games; the DAS, the pieces starting at the bottom, the near nonexistent pauses in gameplay, and it was captivating; I later found TGM1, played it a bit, wasn't good at it (I got S3 maybe?), and never gave much thought to it afterward. Sometime later, a google search led me to this forum where I learned that TAP, the game from the video, was out there somewhere, and so my search started again. It wasn't easy but I managed to play the game, that game from the video, and I thought I was bad at TGM1, this was just something else. But I was having so much fun, I wanted to become good, and having seen information about a new, third game that had just come out, I wanted to know more about the series in general. I had also gained somewhat of a real interest in Tetris up to this point and had been playing other games (Tetris Worlds, Tetris DX, Tetrinet2 for maybe a month and I hardly remembered anything about it) but TGM is what really got me going. 2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play? TGM series from 2005 or 2006 to 2009, I played it far less after that in favor of guideline VS games (TOJ, Tetris Friends, Tetris DS) and some fangames (namely Blockbox and later Nullpomino, for line clear and VS modes) By 2012 I was playing far less Tetris, every so often I'd play Nullpo or TOP (after TOJ died) for a couple of weeks, maybe a few games of TGM every few months. Since AGDQ I've started seriously getting into TGM2, and now TGM3 again. 3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ) keep you busy? At the moment, Nuclear Throne 4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy? Tetris Attack/Panel De Pon series as well as Dr. Mario Rx but I haven't played that in a long time. 5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept? Back in 2005 I was looking for info about TGM2, a game that aside from the video had almost no acknowledgement of existing, and found some posts on here about it. It looks... a little different since then.
Hi every one After much hesitation, and as I'll probably get a bit serious about Tetris in the next few days/weeks/months/years, I decided myself to register in this forum 1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? Well, I think I started Tetris like most people on the Gameboy version. To be honest, I was not that much interested in the game at that time (I was probably 7 or 8 ). The point should be more focus on "why I decided to play Tetris again?" Well, to be honest, that's linked to a TV programm I saw years ago (can't recall the date exactly, but should be around 2008/2009, maybe 2010). The channel was a (still active) french adsl TV called nolife, with their broadcast "superplay", where I saw two french dudes playing TGM (If I recall exactly, a young player of TGM1 called Petit Prince, and a young adult playing TAP called Amnesia). This was truly a shock for me. I mean, I was so stunned to see how fast human being can play this game, and I immediatly fall in love with this game, but, unable to find a proper version to play (a very glitchy mame rom at best), I did not get any deeper in TGM. A few years later, I discovered the Taito Type X, but due to lack of time and the will to avoid piracy (Type X was still active in arcade centers, I did not wanted to encourage people leaving gamecenters), I did not go any deeper as well. Things have changed one month ago, when I decided, after 10 years, to buy a proper japanese arcade cabinet (a Sega Blast City to be precise). I mean, a child dream coming true ! Last week, I found a good deal with a ZN2 motherboard with TGM1 pcb, and I also possess a Taito Type X motherboard (still need to buy a TGM 3 version). And here I am To be quite honest, I also saw some superplay made by a team of French superplayers (simply called team superplay live) during an arcade fest occuring once a year called the stunfest commented by Amnesia, wich reminded me about the TV show I saw years ago. This was made on Ti, and my jaw dropped seeing how Ti was "unhuman" compared to older TGM games (I think the player was Jago). Well, to see such a nice Tetris community gave me the envy to join 2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play? For the moment, I practise on Nullpomino, a game I found thanks to Tetrisconcept which is quite stunning. I still have an issue about inputs that are simply not interpreted by the game, resulting in a missdrop that cost me the game even if I really smached that µ$+ù1# button, but I am really seriously playing the game since last sunday. Yesterday I achieved the S1 rank on TGM1 which was the gaming session objective. Still, I really struggle at the moment at 5G (level 300 and more) which represent a kind of wall at the moment. I am also a bit confused about the lock delay that seems to be a bit shorter than level 200, but I'm quite sure that I will naturally progress if I'm serious with trainnig. Next week, I'll probably be playing TGM1 every day after work on my gorgeous Blast City I have great expectations about tetris: I do want to become as good as people who gave me the envy to become a TGM player, no matter what. Frankly, I am specifically attracted by GrandMaster series, I don't really think I'll play any other Tetris version (like the nes version etc) 3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ) keep you busy? Well, I basically decided to focus myself on 16 bits era + arcade games, which represent my childhood. I am quite found of 2D vs fighting games and shmups as well. 4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy? To be honest, I do not really play any other puzzle game appart from tetris. I still see every broadcast of Puyo Puyo S rank league commented by a french caster called Ken Bogard, but I feel less attraction about Puyo compared to Tetris, can't really say why. I am not quite sure that it could be considered as a puzzle game, but I'm a big fan of Puzzle Bobble (bust a move again) as well. 5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept? Well during the broadcast of which I was speaking in the first paragraph, the players gave the url of the web site. See ya
Welcome guys! Rif-Raf, indeed it was Amnesia and PetitPrince! Jago is part of team SuperPlayLive as well. I imagine that you will take part in the French baguette community EnchantressofNumbers, don't hesitate to look around, search for answers or ask if you need help about how to plug and make TGM work. There is a number of other topics talking about that, after all Maka welcome (back), good luck on your TAP/TI road!
Hey, all 1. Why did you start playing Tetris? I played it when I was a kid on various windows machines, but I was pretty young and never really got into it. I started trying to take tetris seriously maybe a week or so ago, after watching the ADGQ stream and then seeing KevinDDR pass the GM exam on ti. 2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play? I bought Tetris Ultimate on ps4 initially to see if I'd actually enjoy a tetris game. I like the stacking elements, but it wasn't very long before I started griping about occasional lag eating inputs and some other issues, so I looked for a better solution. I've got TGM running in MAME, so I figure I'll practice on that and try to hit GM and then start thinking about what's next; probably trying to get my hands on ti in some form? 3. What other games besides Tetris keep you busy? My latest time sink has been Destiny, which I affectionately refer to as "the worst game I've ever spent hundreds of hours playing". I have a good group of people I play with in it, plus my wife likes to play it. Any game which you can play with your wife rapidly becomes a favourite game. When I was in upstate NY, I started playing fighting games; I do it less now that I'm in the Bay area, but I still like to practice P4AU and I need to get more into Guilty Gear. 4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy? Not really! I know some friends of mine in college really enjoyed Puzzle Fighter, so I might pick that up and try playing it as well. 5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept? It came up a lot while I was googling for information on TGM and ti. After reading a couple of the threads, I figured I should register and start participating in the community.
I originally picked up Tetris when the Game Boy version went up as a Club Nintendo reward. It was a pretty cool way to kill time, I guess. I was okay at it. As I am now, I consider myself pretty mediocre. My best rank in TGM is 1 (assuming I'm right in thinking 'normal' in Texmaster = TGM's main mode), but I have only been playing it for about a week. Right now I'm playing Texmaster, about 2 hours a day, maybe more. I play tons of other games, but not very often. I was highly addicted to Team Fortress 2, although I've been ignoring it for tetris lately. I don't really play any other block puzzle games. I, like probably many others recently, was lured here by the fantastic showcase at AGDQ. Also, I feel like my IQ has dropped by like 15 points in the last year or two, and I read somewhere that Tetris can help improve some functions of your brain, so
1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? I got inspired after AGDQ. I had never really played Tetris aside from NES Tetris when I was a kid. I'm still very much a beginner player. 2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play? I downloaded Texmaster a few weeks ago, and I've been playing it close to daily at this point. It's quick to boot up and I tell myself I'll just kill a few minutes and play a few runs, then suddenly it's 2 hours later and I've been playing nonstop. 3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ) keep you busy? I spend the most time playing Beatmania IIDX, which I've been playing a lot recently after taking a few years' hiatus from it. I'm currently a 9-dan level (late 11's/early 12's) player. I've seen some overlap between the Bemani and TGM communities, and I guess it's because both games requite some level of masochism and self-hatred to want to keep yourself climbing the skill ladder. 4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy? Nope, TGM is my first entry into the genre. 5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept? AGDQ, same place as I assume most new members coming in found out about it.
1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? I started in earnest after AGDQ, like so many others! I've therefore been keeping at it (tgm in particular) for a little over a month, and heck no 2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play? TGM, TAP, and the new Puyo Puyo Tetris. The first two an hour or more per day right now - I got it bad; the last only a bit on the weekends with my roommate sometimes. 3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ) keep you busy? I dick around with indie games a lot. Used to play TONS of Rock Band 2 & Spelunky. 4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy? I wish I understood puyo puyo enough to enjoy it <_> 5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept? Looking up info about TGM strategy and timing, and then through the IRC channel on quakenet.
