  3. Scoremaster! Welcome! Many of us stumbled our way to tc after not playing for years. It's pretty cool to see people pop up here and there that have such incredible skill. I heard nothing but good things about your play at CTWC. I hope to see you there one of these years. MGC is also a great time, if you happen to want to visit Wisconsin.

    Hello all,

I don't remember how I found this forum, but when I got here that was the first time I learned that it was even possible to score 999,999. I had always considered level 19 to be impossible, I had no idea there were people out there who could play that level.

I strictly play NES tetris, on the original hardware, as I don't think any other version is as good as the original. I have my NES console connected to a composite-VGA converter and I play it on my 24" Sony CRT computer monitor.

I used to consider myself a great player, until I saw the leaderboard here. I always play Level 9 and consider anything over 400,000 a good score. I've topped 500,000 only twice now, my goal is 600k. I had one perfect game going after 100 lines (when it went from level 9 to 10, my score was just over 300,000) once but blew it shortly thereafter.

I play in streaks. I've played off and on for 20 or so years, and sometimes put away the NES for years. But every few years, I get the urge to play Tetris so I pull it out. I play 1-2 hours a day, 2-3 days a week, maybe 2 months a year. So I don't play all that much.

  5. Welcome bmw! :) Sorry for not saying hello earlier. Hope you enjoy your stay on the forums, and best of luck on your NES journey.

By the way, what kind of NTSC->VGA converter are you using? Would you happen to know if it adds any sort of delay?

I'm using an HRT TVB-350. I picked mine up on ebay for $50 new. I see they're fairly scarce - they occasionally show up on ebay as government surplus in the $30-$40 range.

I'm very happy with the picture quality - it de-interlaces very well and I'm pleasantly surprised at how good my NES via composite looks on my VGA monitor. It has controls for brightness, contrast, and color saturation

It supports Composite, S-video, and yCbCr as inputs. It outputs VGA to a variety of resolutions - I run mine at 800x600.

I had originally purchased it to play my N-64 via S-video on my CRT monitor but quickly found this as a secondary use for it.

As for time delay - if it exists, I can not detect it. Being able to bypass the computer entirely probably all but eliminates it.

  7. I'm new here! I've lurked for quite a while and finally decided to make an account. Nice to meet you all.

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player?

I don't know why, I just seem to have always played it. I really enjoyed it as a kid, so I must've been playing for 20 years. Not sure if I'm great by tetrisconcept standards, but I'm easily the best person I know.

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

NES (Nintendo and Tengen), SNES, and Gameboy Tetris. I've played various Tetris iterations but I find these to be the best.

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any) keep you busy?

Not so much any these days, I find myself enjoying board and card games more often.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?

Tetris Attack, Tetris Blast, Tetris 2, etc. Not too familiar with recently released block and puzzle games, most seem to be Tetris Attack rehashes.

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

    Google.

    Welcome!

  9. Hi, I've been lurking here for a little while, and I my time zone means I probably won't be able to catch the AGDQ stream, so I thought I'd wish you guys luck ahead of time, and hope to catch a replay :D

Seems like as good a time as any to say hello as well.

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? ^^

I remember someone bringing the 1st generation Game Boy to school with Tetris, and the game instantly clicked with me, I was already a fan of video games, and had always found logic puzzles/games really appealing to me; someone seemed to have crafted the perfect beautiful digital game, and made it portable :D

That was 20 odd years ago, and I've been playing on and off ever since. I would probably consider myself an average player, growing up I had never met anyone that could really give me a challenge in any mode, then the rise of internet videos and online play showed me just how much more there was to the game, and just how far there is to go :D

One moment that sticks with me was my first gentle steps into Tetris DS Vs, and the very first time I saw a T-Spin triple, that was some face melting confusion. I spent the next few hours reading all about T spin mechanics.

Obviously there was a similarly face melting reaction to seeing the famous Jin8 video when it was first doing the rounds.

I've never really got bored of the game, it's always something I've just drifted away from. I hadn't really played much Tetris since I stopped playing Tetris DS around 2008, but recently I watched Kitaru in the Best of NES marathon which has inspired me to make a proper go of improving my Tetris skills properly, and getting a deeper understanding of the game.

To that end, I'm going to throw my best efforts at the TGM series :D

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?
At the moment, I'm mainly playing TGM3: TI, I gleefully thought I was doing well on TI, until I took the time out to read about World Vs Classic (This was after an embarrassing 5 minutes trying to understand why I couldn't pull off Zangi-moves ), tried Classic instead of World, and had to re-adjust my thinking somewhat.

I try to get a few games in a day, and more on weekends. I've been playing since about November and I've passed the rank "2" exam, the highest rank I've seen so far is "S2"; baby steps for sure, hopefully that will improve :D I'm recording most of my results, so I'll probably ask for some help setting some realistic goals for myself at some point.

I've also been playing TAP+ on and off to try and force myself learn additional stacking/recovery strategy, without falling back on Hold as much.

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?
At heart I'm a first person shooter guy, I've been playing online since Quake 1 (Quake TF holds a very special place in my heart). I also find myself playing a lot of Rogue-like/lite games these days, Necrodancer, BOI etc.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?
None that I'm playing currently, but in the past I've had great fun with things like Wetrix, Tetrisphere, Tetris Blast; if it's got blocks, and puzzle, I'll probably enjoy it :D

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?
I headed over here after watching Kitaru in the most recent Best of NES and have been lurking about ever since. Thanks for the great resources.

  10. 1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? ^^

Hi everyone, my name is Aaron. I started playing NES Tetris as a teenager at a friend's house. I became obsessed with the game and quickly became better than my friend. I remember scoring a few games in the 500's and my high was 627k. After high school (class of 94), I stopped playing, and it wasn't until I stumbled upon Ecstasy of Order late last year (2014) that I became interested in playing again. I was/am very impressed by the videos of the Tetris master's games, and decided to dust off my old Nintendo (yes I still had the one I bought when I was 12 years old back in 1987). I got really serious about it this past October.

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

I only play NES Tetris. I try to play some everyday, but it's hard to find time. My current personal high score is 788,975 (achieved on 12/16/14). I currently spend most of my play starting on level 19, trying to improve upon my personal record level 19 start score of 319,771 (achieved on 12/12/14). I would love to be able to max the game someday, but my goal right now is to just keep improving. At 39 years old my hand eye coordination is not as good as it was when I was a teenager, but I understand the game so much more now.

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?

I like to play MS PacMan, Donkey Kong, and a few other arcade classics. I have not played a new video game in over 10 years.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?

    Does the Rubik's Cube count?

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

    Google search

  11. 1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? ^^

Last time, I played tetris was somewhere around 20 years ago. I wanted to try out the grand master so badly, I haven't had the time to find out how to get the game and play it. I saw this video like 10 years maybe.

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

I have played tetris on the gameboy. I played like maybe 1 or 2 hours a day back then, I don't really remember. I played a lot of other games back then.

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?

Right now, I speed run a game called Super Metroid. My secondary game I also run is The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I also play other games like osu!, Diablo 2, Diablo 3, etc.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?
    Bejeweled

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

AGDQ2015! You guys did a really good job performing there. I've seen this level of play before like the video above and to see it at this event live watching from my house was excellent.

  12. Whew. This is probably long overdue, but better late than never.

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? ^^

Found TetrisDS when it came out; have played with an eye towards speed for perhaps 3 years now. I would like to think I'm decent (my 40L pb is 35.21 and I've nearly gotten 33.xx several times,) although my playstyle is often very sloppy.

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

Strictly NullpoMino, whenever I have a little free time.

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?
I follow the competitive Super Smash Bros. Melee scene, and I currently have the 4th-fastest known 100% time and several time trial tied WRs for an indie game called VVVVVV.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?

I'm not as familiar with the genre as a whole as I'd like to be, unfortunately. Video games take up too much of my life as it is.

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

I believe I knew about it vaguely from harddrop a while ago, but the Shirase run at AGDQ blew my mind.

  13. Hey, I'm new.

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? ^^

Because I enjoyed it at the arcade when I was younger, I wanted it on my computer similar to Microsoft XP's pinball game. I played casually for a few years when I was younger, haven't played apart from the occasional arcade game for about five years. By no means am I a good player.

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

I played a lot of Lockjaw and moved onto TGM before I started working full time.

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?

I've been playing GTAV, Binding of Isaac, and occasionally Destiny. Not much going on! I play Lemmings sometimes because it's silly. I like Dominion a lot.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?

Does Portal count? :p Braid was alright. Those slidey block puzzles are fun to play with.

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

I remember it being a thing with one of my roommates a while back. I just sort of knew about it, and was a bit curious. I want to see what the community is like now, since I was never heavily involved in any Tetris forum.

And don't forget to stop by the records section and share your scores for various games that you play. Don't be shy, everyone's welcome regardless of skill. :)

  15. Hey! I'm probably the one-hundredth person to register here after that killer exhibition at AGDQ, but it can't be stressed how awesome that was for me personally. It might've been the kick I needed to finally get to mastering a game

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? ^^

I got a copy of GB Tetris as a youngster, and I really liked playing it, but it wasn't until Tetris DS came out that I realized how much I LOVE this game in general. It's probably the only game that I don't lose steam with after hours of play. I played basically every day for several years, and although I haven't played in a bit, I was inspired by that AGDQ display to pick it back up.

Also, I'm terrible. I hope to fix that, though!

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

I casually played TDS ever since it came out, really, and when I wasn't playing that, I was playing NES (Nintendo, specifically). I vaguely knew about TGM/Null before last night, but seeing it played and explained made me really want to pick it up and learn it, so that's what I'm doing! I'm waiting for my next opportunity to get a fight stick for it, and when I do, I can't imagine that I'm gonna be playing much else for a while.

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?

I love video games in general! I hope to be a designer one day (thinking about them takes up a lot of my brain usage, so I might as well get paid for it). As for games I commonly play, I really like the Platinum action games, Smash, and rhythm games (shout-outs to osu). My favorite games of all-time include Tetris (duh), SMB3, Majora's Mask, ICO/Shadow of the Colossus, and Missile Command.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?

I played Hexic and Tetris Attack a lot whenever I went to my friend's house, and besides that, I can't really think of any block puzzles games I like. There are a bunch of non-block puzzle games that're good, of course.

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

My gut wants to say at AGDQ (more shout-outs to Qlex's shirt), but I could've sworn I've checked this place out before! Ah well

Hello to all the newcomers !
.. stay away from that fucking sucking soul game ! (my best advise for your social life)

  17. 1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? ^^

Started when Tetris first broke big in the US with Tengen Tetris on the NES and have been playing various versions ever since (Gameboy, Next Tetris, Worlds, Splash, various clones). It's been off and on since Next Tetris though. Lately I've mostly played it as a time waster on iOS. I also use it as my version of 'hello world' whenever I learn a new programming language, usually with some kind of rules twist thrown in. My favorites are the VR version that you play by sound only and the version that actively hates the player and refuses to give them useful pieces.

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

Mostly the latest iOS version, whenever I have to wait somewhere. I just picked up Nullpomino after seeing the TGM exhibition at AGDQ because I want to get back into it and it looked like a different challenge than all the other versions I've played. As advertised, the TGM3 rules have been kicking my ass the last couple days, which is great.

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?

4X games generally, I've been part of the Civ community since the Civ II days (more active earlier than lately).

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?

    Not lately.

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

The really great run at AGDQ2015!

  18. HI IM RYAN

    1. I played tetris friend on FB a bit and then I met colour thief and started playing TGM at his place for a few weeks, then we went to AGDQ and I played more and now I'm gonna play more some more. I am a crappy tetris guy

    2. I've played some tetris friends but now I'm working primarily on TAP Master GM(looong term goal)

    3. The main game I play is Guilty Gear Xrd, but I've played probably around 15 different fighting games in some serious level? Melee too but I don't play seriously anymore, only fun allowed. IIDX occasionally too, and ITG when I have the chance and want to look dumb. Crypt of the Necrodancer is another one I like a lot but I haven't played it much recently. Hearthstone sometimes when I feel like it. Isaac rebirth as well.

    4. Money Idol Exchange

    5. That colour thief guy lol

I'm grinding TAP pretty hard right now cuz I wanna be good. ;)

  19. Jayce, Wetrix is awesome, had completely forgotten about that game haha
AaronC those are some very good NES scores o_o
MasterGTS amazing that you speedrun such an awesome game as Super Metroid! Do you aim for a specific category? What are your times on that?
dismune same. VVVVVV is an incredibly hard game to speedrun. I guess I should check your times and videos as well :D
    perpetually.naive, welcome!
EnhancedAcedia and Novomancy thanks for your comments guys, we're glad you liked the run.

And... Flying Power Block King! I preferred Gunfinity, but welcome anyways dude, it's nice to see you on the boards :) I'll be glad to challenge you again on Money Idol Exchange 2!

  20. Such a charming game. I made a thread in this very forum way back when I first discovered it (warning: broken english inside). Rubber duckies and rainbow ! What else do you need ?
