The Introduction Thread

  1. Hi All! I'm Pete, and here's my introduction. I'm also incredibly terrible with forums, so forgive me if I'm ever out of place. I'll catch on soon, I promise ;)

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? ^^

I started playing because I came across a certain documentary that I found to be very inspiring (humbled to be in the presence of you all that are here!). I started playing in September (2013). I don't think I'm a great player yet, but I'm having a blast learning the game and my scores are going up! One day I hope to be a regular in the community, though - you all seem like such champions!

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

I play NES Nintendo Tetris mostly (currently at a 522,200). I also play Tengen Tetris, Game Boy Tetris (477k), Atari Arcade Tetris (pitiful 161k, but the machine is at a bar... so, yep!), and V-Tetris on the Virtual Boy (6,951,750 at 838 lines). I'll practice a few times a week for a few hours at a time. But I usually play in some capacity daily - usually Game Boy on my commute to work.

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?

I love most NES games, and SNES games. Especially the hard ones: Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man, etc.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?

    Klax! My first puzzle love.

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

I don't really remember. I think through browsing Tetris info on Google.

I'm sure as my scores get a bit higher, I'll start posting in the other threads! Thanks, All!

  2. Welcome Jonatan and Metallian! I look forward to seeing you guys in the score threads. ;)

  3. sup sup tetrisconcept, this is beatsgo. Newb into competitive tetris and want to gain insights on techniques and theories behind stacking those lines

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? ^^
I'm not all that great, but I had the original GB game for my GB and had a lot of time while I was young. Stopped playing sometime around 10 because Pokemon and school consumed my life. Ever since I saw that Arika TGM3 GM video couple of years ago, my itch to stack lines is getting back to me.

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?
Currently none :sowsuser:, but looking to get back into the swing of things. Currently looking for a TGM PCB to put into my Astro Cab

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?
Puzzle and Dragons, Pokemon X, Puzzle Bobble 4 and shmups!

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?
I love Puzzle Bobble! Something about it's simple game mechanics keeps drawing me in everytime I play. Surprised there's no dedicated forum to it. My phone has Puzzle and Draongs (PAD). If you never played it, think of it as a Bejewled/Candy Crush, Pokemon, Dungeon Crawler game. And yes, this game can be taken seriously and be enjoyed.

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?
    F-Man directed me here ;)

  4. Nice! Hope you'll enjoy your stay!

    Welcome :)

  5. Welcome man!

And yeah, I think surely someone here would have an extra TGM1 PCB to sell you?

  6. hey

Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player?
Apart from the little exposure I had to cheap Tetris handheld clones during my childhood, I got into it around 2010/2011 when a friend asked me to play against him on Tetris Friends, his interest sort of faded as my addiction kept spiraling downwards.

What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?
At the moment I only really play 40 lines in Nullpo with a certain focus on improving my speed, but I'm also dabbling ever so slightly in TGM and TGM3 Master.
I consider myself just about decent at Tetris, with a pb in 40L at 45.91s, as of last night (here's my previous best at 46.66). I feel like I have a long ways to go when it comes to TGM, however.

What other games besides Tetris keep you busy?
I like games with simple concepts, I'm liking Race The Sun and Strata at the moment. I also attempt to play ye olde Watch Dogs and DayZ to please some friends.

Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?
I like Puyo a little, but I'm horrible at it. Pan de Pon/Pokémon Puzzle Challenge are also interesting, but I'm probably even worse at that.

How did you find out about tetrisconcept?
dunno, it's just sorta always been there

  7. Hi, been lurking, figured it's time to start posting
    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player?
I'm addicted to puzzles from a young age, been playing NES and handheld tetris as a child and returned to it about 3 years ago and started taking it seriously for about a year and a half. About my skill I find it really hard to gauge it, so I'm defaulting to horrible player IMO.

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?
Mainly texmaster (used to play TGM3 when I could), and a little bit of tetris friends 2P. I'm playing daily, about 1 hour a day.

    3. What other games besides Tetris keep you busy?
Mostly Shmups, Fighting Games and RPG's

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?
Been playing a bit puyo puyo, but I was frustrated from the chain system.
Also I kinda like Cleopatra Fortune, it's pretty sweet.

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?
Almost every tetris search leads here :p

Anyway, hoping to keep posting here and having good time.

  8. Hello. My name is Eric

Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player?

I don’t remember honestly I just know somebody showed me it and taught me to play when I was child. I remember playing a PC version. I am not old enough to have seen the NES version and I don’t remember seeing the Gameboy game either.

I don’t consider myself a great player but I am trying to understand the stradegy behind the game because I find it interesting. When the speed goes up I get nervous and mess up into I top up usually...

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

I play Tetris battle and Tetris Friends. I at one point played the DS version and I liked it but I sold my DS. The time I paly varies. I sometimes play for hours on end and other times it a just a break.

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any) keep you busy?

I have a Steam account so too many to list. I like other puzzle games, and some online games.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?

I enjoy playing Lumines a lot and I like just as much as Tetris. I also must admit I am part of the candy crush wave.

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

A Tetris wiki took me here to look at a forum post.

  9. Alright! Seems like a lot of people start coming here more or less from Tetris DS. I was in the same case :)

    Welcome!

  10. 1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? ^^

I played gameboy tetris on the porch as a kid, battling it out over link cables. I didn't get much time since I didn't own the system, but it was still excellent. After that, I probably touched several random worthless flash versions before finally stumbling onto NOV's TAP Death video sometime in 2005. I remember thinking to myself that it looked easy compared to Quake 3 OSP. "That guy isn't fast!" Little did I know...

I don't consider myself a great player. I visited some arcades in Japan, and had a routine planned out where I'd watch someone play: then sit down myself to awkwardly try it, but improve along the lines of https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=F9J3myskBsE#t=402

I never bothered with this. Even my best play wouldn't look like much of anything to the true masters.

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

I play Texmaster, which clones the TGM series. For the first few years, I played emulated TAP modes until I reached a master rank for Death sometime in late 2008. Since then I've basically been playing Ti modes exclusively, to my detriment. When I'm training, an hour a day is great.

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?

Ultrono Arena : the game of kings and spheres alike.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?

    Not really.

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

When I first saw the NOV Death video, there was no easy way of acquiring TGM2p.zip. I googled my heart out until I found some french forums where a player named Amnesia talked about it. I messaged him, and he demanded that I GM TGM1 before he would send me the file....so some weeks later we met up on MSN and initiated a file transfer, where he also mentioned tetrisconcept.

  11. Oh, man. This sounds so much like him! :D

  12. Hi there o/
My name is Nicolas, I'm 20, French (if my english isn't really good, then you know why).

Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player ?

I think I've seriously started playing Tetris when I was 15 (5 years ago), with Tetris DS, Tetris Friends and Texmaster, after I've seen on the TV a guy playing TGM.
I consider myself as an "average good player". I'm better than people who play casually, but I'm not awesome.

What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

I haven't played Tetris for years, but recently got interested on it again by viewing this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF8ApkULiig
I'm not playing a lot for now, I will probably try to play on Tetris Friends which is difficult because my computer is slow so it's hard to play on it. I'd like to play TGM, in fact that's why I'm here (but I'll talk about that later).

What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?

Tons of games ! I don't have particular titles to give, but I play on Xbox 360 and PC.

How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

After I watched the video linked above, I wanted to play TGM, so I asked on the comments if someone knew how I could play this game.
I've been replied to come here and take a look, and that's what I'm actually doing. I haven't visited much for now, as I first wanted to introduce myself :)

I'm not sure I have more to say, but feel free to ask me anything.

  13. Welcome to the club of the French guys :D You'll see, there's a bunch of French tetris players around!

  14. Thanks :)
    Nice to see that ^^

  15. On Nolife ? That would be me. Or Amnesia.

    Anyway, welcome !

(he says he only remembered my username and not Amnesia's; I answered that Amnesia's choice of username was particularly appropriate in that case)

  18. 1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? ^^
I started playing Tetris when I was 3 years old with one of those 200 games in one LCD game things. I don't consider my self a great player, but eventually I'd like to become a Grandmaster!

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

I've played quite a few Tetris games over the years. I played NES Tetris quite a bit when I was very young, and various other Tetris games besides, but I got serious when I found Tetris Zone on the PC and decided I really wanted to complete its Marathon mode. This lead to me buying Tetris DS and playing quite a bit of Tetris Friends as the fever kicked in. In turn, this lead to me wanting to learn more about Tetris, so through my search I found Hard Drop and their wiki and began to read furiously. After a while I realized that most people on Hard Drop were playing Tetris in multiplayer, so I started playing a lot of Battle 2p on Friends (I think I'm like Rank 11). My main focus continued to be trying to finish Marathon mode (which I did on Tetris DS, because seriously, who didn't?). I also play a lot of Shmups and have an account on ShmupsForum, so after a while I became subscribed to STG Weekly where at one point they had their Awesome Game Replays videos on Tetris the Grand Master. As I had MAME for shmups anyway, I installed TGM and fell in love instantly. The videos pointed me towards Tetris Concept, and now here I am.

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?

I play quite a lot of videogames. It's my main hobby really. My favorites however are Shmups (DDP SDOJ FTW), Roguelikes (Dat NetHack), Platformers, and some FPS. I also frequently enjoy handheld RPGs ala Pokemon and Etrian Odyssey.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?
Tidalis is pretty fun, and I've always been a lover of Bejeweled, but otherwise not a big fan of puzzle games.

    -----------------------------------

So all in all, I've come here to learn more about the Sega Tetris lineage of Tetris games, and to improve my game in general with the eventual goal of becoming a Grandmaster in Tetris the Grand Master 3: Terror Instinct. It's a lofty goal, and one that I know not many have accomplished, but I really want to do it!

Before I end this long wall of text (sorry ) I'd like to ask a couple of questions.

    1. How far can I get with just a keyboard? I hope to get a stick eventually, but I haven't the money for it now

    2. How do I practice and improve my game of Tetris? What things should I learn, and what practice strategies should I use? I can only really get Grade 2 on TGM at the moment, and it seems my strategies are lackluster.

Thanks for reading all of this if you did, and I'm looking forward to meeting all of you ^^

  19. Welcome CoolgyFurlough!

    1. Don't worry, playing on keyboard doesn't limit you at all! In fact, some would even argue that it's the superior input method (it's easier to double-tap or even triple-tap at high speeds). Quite a few players here mainly play on keyboard, take [-Steve-] as an example who is one of the TGM3 WORLD Gms. Having said that, playing on a stick is great fun. :) If you eventually get one, you'll quickly get used to it, however, it plays differently at lower speeds, because certain moves start making more sense.

    2. I highly recommend the TGM guide, it explains the strategy and the possible movement in TGM really well. Another great read is PetitPrince's guide. Also, feel free to browse through the Strategy subforum, there are many interesting discussions on TGM strategy. A good way to improve (other than just playing a lot :p) is to post a video of one of your games on the forum and ask for some feedback on your stacking. Alternatively you could watch other player's TGM videos and see how their decisions during the game differ from what you would have done.

    Happy stacking! :)

  20. Hey Everybody!

Had a great time meeting the NES masters at the PRGE this year. Very rad group. Thanks for being so welcoming and encouraging!

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player?

I started playing back when we first got our NES as a child. My dad used to hog the controller and I vaguely remember him playing 400k's back in the day. His signature quote pre-tetris was always "What's the name of the game??" followed by the Tetris brrrinnnnngngggg sound.

I don't recall being able to play well as a kid, but I ended up taking my NES to college in '99, and me and my freshman roomate Pat settled on Tetris as the game of choice pretty early on. We almost exclusively played 9 starts with a "one game and pass the controller" type setup. A few other guys from the floor played quite a bit with us, and the NES was a fixture for the next 5 years. I played an 897k sophmore year at one point, but 7/800 game plays were pretty rare. We considered 400+ solid, 500+ somewhat notable, and 600k games as good. This was all in a bubble for the most part, with very little research/investigation into anyone else putting serious time into the game.

After college, I continued playing for a while until getting a newer TV with the associated input lag, and pretty much fell out of it for 5-6 years. Found out about the Championships a few months ago and got really freaking excited to come find out what the level of play was like. I grabbed the old CRT I used to play on as a kid out of my parent's basement, and started playing again. I don't think I'll be stopping any time soon.

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

Exclusively NES Tetris these days. Used to play some of the 360 variants, but I'm very much a purist. I probably played 1-2 hours a day leading up to the tourney, and will probably continue at about that pace for a while.

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?

I play a good bit of COD, but much less than I used to since picking up my old crt. Tetris is just so much more rewarding.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?

Does Scrabble count? 2048 was pretty fun for a while as well.

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

I think teh goog originally, but was really encouraged to participate and not just lurk by everyone at PRGE.
