Office Tetris Tournament for casuals

  1. Last Christmas I took a punt and emailed round work (its an IT section - about 100 of us) to see anyone would be up for a Tetris tournament for a bit of fun.

I used a SNES with Tetris & Dr.Mario and after a bit of experimentation, settled on GAME B versus used in a knockout format. (first to 25 lines, garbage on).

It went down a storm...I rigged the SNES up via s-video to a projector and it was an excellent experience all round and as the games were short enough it kept spectators interested too. (Our skills generated much amusement as well I may add).

Many people hadn't played in ages and all agreed it was well worth doing. I'll be doing it again this year (mid December) and was wondering if anyone has any ideas about alternative versions/modes for casual audience/contestants.

  2. The Versus in DC Sega Tetris is really funny if you haven't tried it out yet. :)

  3. Yeah - I've played the Vs. CPU mode and I can see that it's a good laugh - it's really the only alternative I can think of apart from Tetris Party Deluxe.

Only thing is the Tetris tournament is part of a gamer league that was started over the summer and the DC has already featured twice this year (Virtua Tennis 2 and Typing of the Dead) so I might just give the DC a rest and go with Tetris & Dr. Mario once more and bring in Sega Tetris next time.

I had thought about Tetris S on the Saturn but the control is now so old (no wall kicks) and feels a bit sticky, and the game it isn't even all that nice looking....I think I need a sprint mode (or a chaotic Vs mode like Sega tetris) for the casual audience to keep games moving along.

Have you considered Tetris with Cardcaptor Sakura? It's got a pretty solid vs. mode with items which are bound to cause some hilarity, so as long as your colleagues aren't going to have a problem with the anime theme it might be worth a shot. There's also Tetris Splash on XBOX Live Arcade; it's a relatively modern version, with T-spins and combos and very fast gameplay.

To be honest though, Tetris & Dr. Mario is probably your best bet; it's simple and doesn't need any explaining; everyone knows where they stand with it.

  5. yeah - think I'll stick with the SNES version for now - the young 'uns think using the old SNES pad is so quaint.....my SNES would be the same age as a couple of them!
