Subforum for other addictive puzzle games?

Would you like a subforum for other puzzle games?

  1. Yes, I have an open mind and would like to experiment with stacking things other than tetrominoes.

  2. No, to even mention games other than Tetris would be sacrilege!

It might be that after a 5 year drought of decent tetris games, people have simply run out of things to talk about, but whatever the reason, discussion has definitely been a bit lacking lately. However there are plenty of other puzzle games out there that are likely to appeal to tetris players, and with a dedicated subforum for these games, we would definitely have something to talk about. It would likely draw other puzzle game lovers to the community, and may help us shed our "hardcore-elitist-tetris-snob" image.

So how do people feel about the creation of a new subforum? Just to pique your interest, the sorts of games I'm thinking of are games like:

    Cleopatra Fortune
    Aqua Rush
    Kurupachi 6
    Money Puzzle Exchanger
    Block Out
    Pochi & Nyaa
    Columns '97
    Magical Drop 3
    Panel de Pon/Tetris Attack
    Star Sweep

... to name a few. You might be thinking "hmmm... they look vaguely interesting... but I probably won't like them as much as tetris..." But why not give them an honest try? You might find that not only are some of them fiendishly addictive, but also extrememly challenging. For example, I've yet to meet anyone who can score 20M+ on Cleopatra Fortune without exploiting the power-on pattern, or anyone who can even come close to clearing the single player Pochi & Nyaa "Attack" mode on expert. Will one of you rise to the challenge...?

  2. off topic but Pochi & Nyaa's PVP is really fun.

On topic, haven't had much fun in a while.. so i'll give those a try.

  3. I used to play Planet Puzzle League a lot, until I figured out how to play forever... After playing a single game for over 4 hours, it becomes more tiring than fun. The online competition was fun, though.

  4. I would absolutely be interested in Tetris Attack (Panel de Pon). That was an all-time favorite of mine before I found TGM. :)

  5. That sounds like a great idea that would fit right in to...the core message...the branding of tc... I don't know how to phrase that without sounding like a press release:p

I've tried magical drop 3 but didn't particularly care for it. What other game from the list should I try next?

  6. Same here, I actually met colour_thief back on tetrisattack.net and he was the one who introduced me to the community. ^^

  7. I recently got rehooked on SpaceChem but that's not exactly an action puzzle game like the other mentioned.

  8. Amnesia

    Amnesia Piece of Cake

I am the only one who voted no. I am not an absolute racialist of Tetris. But I am just afraid that tc would become a sort of popular soup which would lose his identity.

  9. I always thought it was good not having a "off topic" garbage sub-forum on the boards, making Godwin point conversations harder to appear ^^
However, a "off topic: talk about other puzzle games than tetris" sub-forum would be definitely nice. A friend of mine plays magical drop 3 like a robot, it's a very nice game and I would certainly like reading about the game mechanics to get better and try to beat him once every 100 game lol

  10. It would be great!

I would add Puzzle Bobble 2 and 3 that list.

Magical Drop 2/3 is really a very simple game, but of course so is tetris. :)

TO put it simply, the key is combos. Making matches repeatedly, either through natural lifting action of bubbles rising after ones above them are popped, or making the matches yourself. AS long as you have a combo going, lines aren't added to your screen, and you can save yourself from the jaws of death.

As you make matches rapidly, the game starts to slow down to give you more time to place the next set of bubbles. The bigger your chain, the more assistance you get in continuing it, and the more leeway the game gives you. WHen you see the bubbles you just threw up moving extra slow, it means the combo is still continuing, and you get even more time to grab and position your next set. So it's not just your imagination. :) I find the game a lot more fun then tetris attack, because of the leeway granted while comboing. I just can't seem to react fast enough for that game no matter how hard i try.

It's astonishing how little chance someone has against a player of even moderately more skill. You just need to learn to act faster, and see the combos, and the proper order of clears to continue them, and panic less. In other words, practice more. :) Whoever fails to see a combo fast enough loses.

  12. Does it really have to be just for just puzzle games?

I can see where it links in nicely with Tetris, but if it's in the interest of promoting community discussion and bonding and sappy stuff like that, why not broaden it a bit? I'm sure there are plenty of members here who also enjoy games that aren't inside the puzzle genre, and with the current dynamic of the community I doubt it'd descend into madness and stabbings (I don't think a totally off-topic board would either).

TC already has a Quake Live clan (we fucking suck), I've played a lot of SC2 with muf and a few others, and it'd be nice to extend the arm of social gaming in the community past simply myself, muf and steadshot.

SC2 patch 1.5 will support clans as well

  15. Mostly in reply to your other post in this thread, but I don't think it'd be a huge deal.

Will we lose the current identity of only having Tetris discussion? Yes.
Will we see more generic threads that you could find on plenty of other gaming forums? Probably.
Will we end up being completely overrun by random gaming retards and shitposting? Probably not.

Currently we have a group of people here who are good friends, and who have been for years, but almost all of the social interaction and stuff either happens on Facebook or #arika or somewhere else that isn't this forum. Really, I don't see any decent reason for that and I think it's bad that we have a forum that appears so serious and relatively unfriendly/uninviting when there's actually a huge amount of socialising that goes on behind the scenes. We used to have plenty of dicking around on the forum but Tetris is a fairly dead game these days and we're all too good at TGM to find it exciting any more so I don't think it's a particularly bad idea to diversify. There's only so much banter and joking to be had in a Tetrisy context.

Plus, frankly, posting is so damn slow these days I don't feel like we have a huge amount to lose.

This place already has an established community of people who have been here for five years or more, people who I'm guessing won't pussy out of moderating properly, and to be honest I'd expect anyone who is trolling, causing trouble, or otherwise posting shite on this forum will firmly and swiftly be told by the current community where they can shove it. It's the people who make the content on a forum, not the board structure, and I think we have good people here.

  16. Does anyone else play Tribes Ascend?

  17. there's already a pretty decently-sized PdP/TA community at tetrisattack.org for those games, they've got a nice lil site set up

as far as magical drop 3, I love that game. I just recently purchased the cart for the fairly rare magical drop 2 for super famicom.

    starsweep... I'm a huge fan! I made up a fansite here -> www.starsweep.net

I've been meaning for a long time to check out a lot of the other games you posted. Aqua Rush seems very similar to Quarth.

embarassed to admit this, but I don't (and haven't) played ttgm! I play a lot of tetris dx. I've been saving ttgm for all these years, one day I will get into it and the addiction can begin
