problem for capturing my TGM game

Thread in 'Discussion' started by tet2brik, 20 Dec 2011.

  1. Hi all,

I have just recorded my best time in TGM1 and I would like to capture it in avi.

I have followed the post of petitprince Capture anything in your screen using VirtualDub but the video is too laggy and with a very big size (about 1 Go for 30 seconds).
I’ve also tried with VidShot Capturer and FRAPS but that’s the same : lag, lag, lag !!!

Do you know another method to capture a video ?

Maybe, the problem is the resolution of my screen (1680 x 1050) ?

    Thanks !

  2. Resolution should be the key.
Don't play the video in fullscreen, make a couple of tries with smaller windows until you feel the video is smooth enough with an acceptable quality.

  3. If you still want to play fullscreen, you can set the resolution in Windows to something horribly small (640x480 or something like that).

  4. just tried to encode some street fighter 2 games, nothing happens at the step "press F2" for the file T__T

edit: okay, this has driven me mad, file > set capture file (or press F2) does not work, I've almost threw my laptop out of the window lol
    any clues ?

  5. Thanks guys ! That's it !
I encoded my video in a small window and that looks now acceptable. Thanks for helping.
Petitprince : your tutorial is nice !

For Cyberguille. I know that problem. You just have to go to "device" and disable BEFORE doing file > set capture file (or press F2) and after re-enable the device

  6. Thanks for the hint !
    Did work.
So I encoded a 45 minutes long video to realise at the end that... the colors were in negative ! ha ha ha
Is there a way to correct this in the compressing process ? Or should I, again, watch myself playing for 45 minutes long :p

  7. Use that curve plugin in Virtualdub and set a negative linear curve (so that the line looks like a f(x)= -x function instead of a f(x) = x).
I think that should do the trick. Never used it though.

  8. Another problem:
whatever I try, I can't record properly the sound...
In the capture mode, on the Audio
I have "audio input > "no input" or "volume principal"
"audio source" > "no audio sources"
And on the last line, I only have "0 Microphone (realtek high definition)"
    Any idea ?

  9. I am using HyperCam 2, probably the simplest video recorder I found. It records automatically in avi, so you just have to use Windows Live Movie Maker to download it on YouTube.

remember that TGM1 and TGM2 game resolution is 320x240 !!
TGM3 is 640*480 (almost) so you'll not get higher details, some mame lags issues from there..

  11. Assuming you're using Win Vista or Win 7, there may be a driver issue, see that green box in Audacity wki. I have the same issue with my laptop (Lenovo X220t).
As suggested in that link, if the software solution fail and if you have both a speaker/headphone port and a microphone port, you can plug them with male-male mini-jack cable. Most of them sold in the market are too expensive for what they are, but it's not terribly pricey either.

Why don't you guys just use MAME's inp recording and AVI output capabilities? :sowsuser:

  13. how does it work ?
I tried the "play and record avi" in mame instead than the "play and record .inp" but it's waaaaaaaaaaay too laggy to play.

Petitprince: great ! I think you solved my problem :) trying to record something now to check

No, you play and record to inp, then you convert the inp to avi.

  15. O____________O
Mame can do that O_______o ???

Yeah, just use playback and aviwrite at the same time. That's how everybody has done it since forever :p

  17. I never have room for several minutes of aviwrite. I actually do go back and screencap the inp as it stands...

  18. sorry for my noobitude, but I tried this morning with shmupmame and cannot manage to launch at the same time the "playback input" function and the "play and record avi".
How do you do it ?

  19. I think there are a couple of ways. One is to pass in those options as arguments from the commandline (i.e. shmupmametgm.exe -playback latest.inp -aviwrite SuperCoolGM.avi). I think another would be to use the hotkey for beginning an AVI recording -- check the key configuration for the UI hotkeys in the Tab menu.

Yeah, aviwrite files tend to become several GB big, but that's only temporary until you convert it to something smaller using (for instance) VirtualDub or Handbrake or something. Generally it'll be something like this:

Record inp file which is 30+ minutes long containing multiple games
aviwrite that inp into a massive uncompressed AVI file
Cut out record-breaking game, optionally add music and/or some on-screen overlay
    Encode to smaller file
    Upload to YouTube/Facebook
