I know a lot of us are well seasoned players, but I was wondering how many newer players (or at least new to wallkickless I pieces) are out there. Then maybe we can provide some guidance in mastering this most pivotal of pieces. Really the difference between handling them properly or not is huge. No need to shame yourselves publicly... With the help of an anonymous poll we'll be able to determine if the tips are worth writing up.
No. I find J's and L's in their spawn positions that slide around due to improper rotation a lot more annoying and debilitating. If nothing else, IRS the I and get it to column 5 if possible. Not that bad.
Nah...getting it to the right isn't that hard, and if I need it on the left, then getting column 4 high is almost second nature to me. I miss a lot of good horizontal placements though =(
I'm terrible at needing to fill up a left hole with an I block, always have been. I think one major piece of advice that has helped me is locking a fresh O block to the left once. I actually read that a long time ago, probably before I was into TGM, but recently realized why it's such a good placement.
I hate not being able to get it where I want but then again I'm not that experienced in TGM I'm sure I'll get used to it in no time =)
I need to learn to just lay it flat sometimes instead of instinctively IRS'ing it to a standing orientation even though I know it won't go where I want it to.
This. Once I learnt this, everything became easy. I have two guidelines: build higher ground before attempting to tetris (this way it'll never get stuck without having to worry about the details of basic rotation), and provide a gapless path when tetrising on the left, so you can IRS (or rotate early) and not get it stuck on descent.
