Yeah, I was expecting vector graphics or cell shaded 3D to produce that effect. Instead it looks like it's hand animated with a low framerate.

this can't be only an arcade game...

  3. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

Well, so far it's announced as an arcade game for Sega's Ringwide system. And the series has a poor track record for ports, usually due to licensing issues.

  4. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

Well, that's TTC's fault, usually, to Arika's credit. Or in TGMA's case, Microsoft being restrictive. Boo, hiss.

  5. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

Huh, so Mihara has revealed a bunch more details in a recent blog post. Some pretty surprising stuff:
    • will use the New Net City cab at AM show
    • SD/HD compatible
    • "kindness" as the theme; hardcore players will continue to experience hardcore, while "half-assed players" may say the game got dumbed down and declare the game dead. Mihara looking forward to hearing such things from halfasses.
    • will use Sega Ringwide, but not necessarily published by Sega; too early to tell
    • Theme will involve reincarnating life; the word "round" being one of the key words
    • Rules will differ between SRS/ARS in some modes; In SRS-Master you aim for score while in ARS faster clear times
    • Controls will feature some "kindness"; ARS will have an added "special" button, no details on what it does yet
    • the new Konoha mode will be quite controversial; Jin8, who is helping with testing, is already hooked. Prepare to doubt your own eyes ... in the galgame elements thrown in
    • Hints: Jin8 has no interest in galgames whatsoever; Kitakitsune alerts are very important; Has there ever been a galgame before with such lack of will to reveal?
    • Sorry in advance to those who may say this isn't their image of TGM. But this is a game of skill.
    • 3 modes; Master, Rounds, Konoha
    • "Leaving behind 1/60"
    • tuning has been hell because of this decision; spent the last 3 weeks thinking about it day and night

So... Like just about everything from Japan it seems TGM will be invaded by anime chicks? There seem to be legitimate new gameplay improvements though. I'm most intrigued by the "kindness" added to the controls, the extra button for ARS, and the supposed framerate increase. The latter is likely to not be up to 120 fps though, because I don't think arcade monitors can handle that. Anyone know what they can handle? I think it's something closer to 85 fps or so.

Also it's quite unexpected for SRS and ARS to be differentiated so much. Only ARS gets the new button, and SRS plays Master for score. That's pretty huge.

Looks like more reason for me to not play SRS.

  7. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

I hope it is published by Sega, it would mean that places like Gameworks or Dave & Buster's have a chance of getting it.

    Interesting.

So they are making the sRS modes more guideline compliant, without ruining the ARS modes. Interesting.

And Jin8 liking the new mode... that has to be a good sign.

Also, apparently cute anime chicks are a hook for the new mode, yet Jin8 doesn't care about that, and still likes it. at least that's what I'm gathering.

SO it seems they are a hook to get the normal players to give the mode a try and eat their quarters?

    Uh. Konoha sounds... uh.

    Re: TGM4 Announced!!

    Doesn't sound bad at all!

Different requirements for ARS and SRS play are a welcome change. Both rotations have their own strengths and weaknesses so it's only logical that a different game assessment would eventually be used. I believe this way more people will be motivated to play using both rotation systems as opposed to whats currently happening with Ti.

^^ I had a feeling something like this would happen with a new installment.

the new Konoha mode will be quite controversial; Jin8, who is helping with testing, is already hooked. Prepare to doubt your own eyes ... in the galgame elements thrown in

    Galge elements? Most likely the more conservative galge genre elements. Dont expect adult content since theres virtually none in arcade games as far as I know apart from the occasional strip mahjong and the likes. So we have konoha and galge elements Leaves and anime bishoujo Controversial? Sounds promising! My jaw would drop to the floor if the mode consists of somehow removing leaves that cover the pretty girls to strip them. Hanabi mode, but with konoha being blown away by a magic wind when performing certain line clears. ^^;

Hints: Jin8 has no interest in galgames whatsoever; Kitakitsune alerts are very important; Has there ever been a galgame before with such lack of will to reveal?
Sorry in advance to those who may say this isn't their image of TGM. But this is a game of skill.

lol lack of will to reveal? No nude content confirmed. Image of TGM? Im more excited than ever. Bring on the gameplay videos! ^^

"kindness" as the theme; hardcore players will continue to experience hardcore, while "half-assed players" may say the game got dumbed down and declare the game dead. Mihara looking forward to hearing such things from halfasses.

I like this guy. It looks like they're trying to please as much people as possible. And Jin8 is one lucky guy. Any other players involved in the testing process?

  11. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

    Late midnight speculation:

Master mode would be essentially the same mode that we know and love. TGM4 upgrade to this mode would be a contextual button that would replace the hold button. While in ARE, a neutral stick position + this button would activate IHS. On a direction, it would cancel ARE and DAS it to the left/right. While ingame, direction+button would activate DAS as well, while it would hold if the button is kep pressed.
"Kindness" would be that the ARE duration are generally longer so misholding wouldn't happen that frequently.

Round would reset the playfield depending on some situation (torikan ? section clear ?). This reboot would also change some game rules.

Konaha... I have no f'taghning idea.

  12. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

Kevin mentioned something to me about this that makes more sense: >60hz DAS -- I don't the game timescale is going to necessarily increase.

  13. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

Mihara has apparently also said something like this:

So possibly the game still runs at 60 fps but input could be polled and acted upon as if the game ran 120 fps or more. At a high level you don't really need visual feedback on the moving piece anyways, so I could see this working fine.

  14. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

    More details! :D
    • ARS is move reset
    • A "Special" button replaces second counterclockwise rotation button
    • Moving the lever while having special held down will activate instant DAS
    • 22 lines in field
    • Sparks fly when moving pieces
    • Music is recycled from TGM3 (probably temporary)
    • Master, Rounds as "standard" modes; Konoha, Kamui as "Time Attack" modes
    • Kamui disabled for now
    • music did not change during game
    • stalling for 13 mins will trigger high-speed penalty
    Master:
    • Master feels about the same as TAP
    • seems to be more torikans in place; torikans at 700, 800, 900
    • no grade display
    Rounds:
    • Rounds seems to be Death/Shirase successor; 1400+ seems to exist
    • in rounds 300/500/700/900/1100s, a haze covers part of the field
    • lines in the haze do not clear until end of section, when it mass-clears all at once
    • no line-adding or decoloring
    Konoha:
    • Konoha is Big mode with a silhouette of a girl in the background; all-clearing the field shows the picture partially, twice for fully, thrice for next picture
    • The "Kitakitsune alert" shows up when an all-clear is possible given the current next/hold set
    • with a countdown time limit; clearing lines increases the time
    • no SZs are dealt; only 5 kinds of tetrominos enter the game
    • "Kitakitsune alert" shows up as a picture of a fox aside the level display
    • failing to all-clear despite a Kitakitsune alert will cause a laughing fox voice to play

  15. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

Haha, this was a disabled mode in TGM3's prototype as well. I wonder if it's meant as an in-joke or if we'll finally see it?

Anyhow, I'm hyped to play the first commercial tetris game with instant DAS!!

I'm kind of worried that it has regressed to TAP speeds, though I'm choosing to interpret this as placeholder much like the music, saving the real speeds for the actual release.

Also, I just realised the bravo alerts will be really cool if they take 4 next pieces + hold (+ active piece?) into account. It would train you to be a big mode bravo'ing champ in no time.

  18. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

If it's move reset as implemented in Ti World, I'd be upset. But if the game is rebalanced for it, like ACE Another, then it's no big deal. I suggest waiting for more details on this before freaking out. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with move reset, and the fact that that's all this game will have suggests it might actually be balanced around it.

  19. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

I hope Mihara has found one way or another to make TGM + Move reset challenging. I thought of something like 5 movements max and 5 rotations max per line, and going one line down doesn't reset the movement/rotation counter.

Like colour_thief, I give TGM4 the benefice of doubt.

  20. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

Move reset could still be plenty hard. Let's say that move reset is set up so you get only two or three move resets and that a piece doesn't lock until lock delay expires. It would give you a bit leniency for doing single/double tap placements from spawn, but allow the game to be even faster. Minimal move reset, ultra low lock delay, and Instant DAS sounds like a pretty insane combination.
