Everybody in the world has played Tetris just about...

I'm 24, I was exposed to these versions in this order
    NES - Nintendo
    NES - Tengen
    Arcade - Atari/Tengen
    Game Boy - Nintendo
    Tetrisphere (N64)
    Tetris DX (Game Boy Color)
    The New Tetris (N64)
    The Next Tetris Online (Dreamcast)
    Tetris S (Saturn)
    Tetris Worlds (GBA version)
    Famicom
    Tetris DS

Bombliss was in there somewhere at the end too but it sucked, I was playing BPS' Pipe Dream for NES back in the day, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is the best Puyo itteration ever, and Tetris Attack had awesome title screen music... not that any of that matters.

ANYway... after nearly having an aneurysm reading all the Super Tetris-Nerd Lingo [IMG] it reminded me that my three favorite tetris games thus far have been Tetris DX, The New Tetris, and recently Tetris DS. I understand that the standard Tetris guidelines are constantly changing and adapting, so I don't have hopes to see another itteration along the lines of The New Tetris (but I think I liked it just because the music and I thought it played smooth)... but since Tetris DS is relatively new, I figure maybe its gameplay will be or has been mimicked in other releases? As I was browsing the list of games, I watched the video for Kiwamemichi.. and not only does it "look" similar to DS, it seems to play as quickly. I'm not a tetris expert by any means, I just enjoy the game for what it is... but I'd be happy to find another version that is in english or is english-friendly and plays similar to DS and Kiwamemichi... Does one exist?

How disappointed will I be with Tetris Evolution, and will The Grandmaster Ace ever see an american release?

It's frustrating... I don't suck at Tetris games, and I can pick up on gameplay techniques the more i play a given title, but I don't get into them as much as this wiki has broken them down.

also hi, lol first post, etc.

hi, and welcome to the forum.

you'd probably be disappointed with the number of people still playing it. most of them have moved on to Tetris Splash for XBLA, or tetris games on other platforms.

not very likely. beside the fact that it's a bit outdated, no TGM game has been released outside of Japan.

yes. well, i haven't played Kiwamemichi, but there are a few games similar to TDS:

    • Evolution and Splash for XBox 360 (with the main gameplay difference being that kick T-spins are not rewarded).
    • Tetris Party for Wii (also doesn't reward kick T-spins).
    • Tetris Online Japan (like TDS, but combos are also rewarded). it isn't exactly English-friendly, but we have a thread dedicated to it here that can help you get started.
    • Tetris Friends at facebook.com (single player only, no kick T-spins).
    • Tetris Zone (single player only, no T-spin triples).
like TDS and Kiwamemichi, all of these games use the Super Rotation System.

maybe somebody else could fill you in on whether or not combos are rewarded in Evolution, Splash, and Party.

edit: forgot to mention that combos are rewarded in Tetris Friends and Tetris Zone.

  3. I've got Tetris Evolution so just add Meroigo on Xbox LIVE if you wanna take the online achievements. =) I had to ask a guy I know that have Tetris Evolution to play with me, that's how hard it was to find people... Oh, and Tetris Evolution was the game that got me hardcore interested in Tetris. I played that alot together with friends on a gaming meetup we had, we sat together and took as many achievements in it as we could (yeah, you can sign in to four different profiles and use four controllers to play and get achievements to your profiles, this works with many achievements ^^). And out of the friends, I was the one that got seriously into Tetris. =) So I googled and found Tetrisconcept and learned alot and found some great people to chat with too. ^^

Yes.. well... I suppose that was the answer I didn't expect to get hahaha XD I... honestly probably couldn't tell the difference in t-Kick spins or whatever, but it's good to know.

I guess I meant "similar to DS, Kiwamemichi" in how they're very snappy, it's like you can just do piece after piece, boom boom boom boom tilt boom swap boom, lightning fast...

I don't have a Wii (sold it a month after I bought it last year), Online Japan, facebook, and zone don't really fit my interest.. I just like playing on consoles. I tried Splash for XBLA... while I like its snappy piece movement, the music options leave much to be desired (though I suppose I could always burn a cd wither other better tetris music and rip it to my 360) and the atmosphere is annyoing as hell... I hate that fish crap, can't they do like a straight tetris game? Does evolution feel close to Splash? What's the gameboard atmosphere? Does it have just a basic non gimmicky version of the game without crap going on in the background and stuff?

AndI think I need to get my hands on a Hori arcade stick or something for the 360 because the regular D-Pad is terrible...

WOAH THAT'S AWESOME!! The forum told me there was a new reply in the time that I was typing mine, and it didn't post my reply so I could review the new post... hahaha sorry, I was amused [IMG]

  5. In Evolution, you can choose from many background and music themes to use in the game. You can also choose if there should just be pictures or video in the background. Tetris Evolution is also slower than Splash if i remember correctly.

aw damn it is slower than evolution? well I'll have to think hard about the games Im going to try and find today. GameStop is doing a buy 2 get 1 free sale on all their used games... I'm trying to get MegaMan Anniversary collection, Worms 4 Mayhem and maybe something else all for the original xbox (since those two at least are backwards compatible with the 360) but I saw Evolution for like 18 bucks and was thinking about getting it.

How much slower is it than splash (and DS i imagine)? I guess I'm asking about the "DAS" when you go to move a piece, how long it takes to lock on a hard drop, etc...

Tetris Online Japan has built in support for gamepad/joystick. it's also much faster than TDS (faster DAS, line clear delay, soft drop speed). of course you have to play it a little to earn points that you can use to upgrade those gameplay characteristics.

    oh, it's also free [IMG]

  8. I don't know the details of DAS, line clear delay etc.

This is a friend of mine playing Tetris Evolution: http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=qodiKx5Lz5M&fmt=18
This is Dumbledors Army (member of this forum) playing Tetris Splash: http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=PmbSvgSWjjA&fmt=18

Maybe that can give you a picture of their speed compares to each other.

Oh, and me feeling Evolution is slow can be because I've played alot of faster Tetris afterwards. If you're not on my level of hardcoreness, you might find it slow/fast enough. [IMG]

  9. No, you're not getting a false feeling for how slow Evo is. I think Splash beats it by far in terms of 'control smoothness.'

The other main thing that is gonna be an issue with any 360 tetris is the oh-so-wonderfull d-pad on a standard microsoft controller. When I first got Evo I modded the d-pad because I was constantly misdropping pieces. I shave of the diagonal's and turned it into a + insted of an o...

    NOTHING plays similarly to kiwamemichi.

It has a reather unique "post entry delay" ssytem that gives you a second or so to slide peices before they drop.

Tetris Zone is probably the closest you will find to tetris DS.

gotta disagree with that. Tetris Zone is single player only, and shares no identical modes with TDS. it also doesn't reward T-spin triples. TOJ has different single player modes from TDS too, but it does have multiplayer (6-player and 1vs1, no items in both), and T-spin triples are rewarded.

im not so worried about the other modes of DS, i like just the straightforward normal game.

Meroigo; the videos helped (I actually looked at other evo videos too).. I do like the speed of Splash but I just HATE the freakin background and presentation.

Jujube; I might check out online japan.. but I have little patience for navigating non-english menus in games, even with guides.... I guess that's why I never got into the Saturn import scene much _

I think I might just bite the bullet and try to get ahold of Evo... gonna have to wait for now because my games budget was just spent on three original xbox titles (MegaMan Anniversary collection, Worms 4, and Roadkill), I've got other far more important bills coming up t hat I need to cover first [IMG] I also found a video of Tetris Advance, which seems to play a lot like DS.. but the sound is horrid.

  13. Sorry to interrupt, but I wonder if Tetris Splash is still available on Xbox Live.
I just went to the marketplace to check it out, and couldn't find it. Maybe it's no longer available, OR maybe it doesn't exist in PAL territory?

Delay between the end of ARE and the start of gravity? Lumines has plenty of that. The Tetris game in Tetris & Dr. Mario for Super NES has it too, but only for the first piece.

Imagine how hard it must be for a five-year-old who hasn't yet learned to read. To such a player, Japanese games are no harder than English games.

  16. I see. Then I shall try Tetris Evolution just so that I have some form of Tetris on my 360. [IMG]

EDIT: This one says it WAS released in Europe. http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox360 ... 41997.html

Tepples: meh, I've become much more of a casual gamer over the past few years, I don't want to take that much time just to figure out wtf I'm doing in a game's menu. I have over 500 games across 20+ consoles, and the only thing I have out anymore is my 360 and my PSP. When I want to play a game, I want to play a game, not have to think beyond the main game's concept.

Burbruee: you might be able to get Tetris splash if you change your region to the US in the 360's dashboard... at least I think that's what people were doing to get certain content when they were overseas with their consoles like in "the war" in the middle east and crap.

TOJ's interface is really not that hard to figure out. You may be lost on your first time launching the game, but it's not rocket science and you'll be able to find your way around within 10 minutes with a little assistance. I highly recommend giving it a try first before moving on as you'd be missing out on a superior experience for something so trivial.

  19. Actually, from what I heard that's not possible to do anymore since the last update. Microsoft blocked it or so I've heard.

    Anyway, enough off-topic. ^^

  20. Do not hold me responsible for any kind of punishment you might receive by doing the following.

I got Tetris Splash by first making an US gamertag and then sending money to a certain kind American, who bought the MS Points in his local GameStop and afterwards wrote the code to me. Yeah you must have American MS Points to be able to buy things from the American Marketplace. Then I obtained the MS Points and could easily download the game. I did this a couple of weeks ago. I haven't tried accessing movies, videos and stuff that are the American licensed stuff. But I guess only those things (movies etc) are blocked for the rest of the world (I read that on some forum too :p). To download XBLA games and gamerpics, themes etc, works fine.
