    And why?

  2. Keyboard for easy access to all of the keys

  3. Well, it depends on the gameplay style. SRS or TGM? 0G or 20G?

In general, no matter what, I dislike gamepads. You've just got 2 thumbs there... I'm not saying that can't be fast, but other setups are certainly faster.

I like joysticks for zangi-moves in 0G, and I'm not at all picky about what I use in 20G, as long as it's not a gamepad. I'll practice with the cheat file in MAME using a keyboard, and then move to the arcade cabinet with a joystick. I can seemlessly transition back and forth without feeling disadvantaged in either case.

Gamepad because that's all I have on the bus.

    Another vote for keyboard.

Having access to so many keys at any given time allows me to play much faster than on traditional gamepads. Gamepads actually give me cramps now if I attempt to play fast.

I've never played with a joystick before so I can't comment.

Keyboard. Im better with gamepad (TDS) but am starting to use keyboard for TGM, TAP and LJ, and once i get used to it I can see it's going to be much faster. Ive never used an arcade, or a joystick, and it seems crap. You have to move several centimetres it seems, instead of 1-2 mm to make a move. They just dont seem designed for fast play, more for casual play, like input is a last second thing with no real thought into R&D. but thats just my opinion, and I've never used one but thats how they appear to me. I'm still very kewen to try one though, but nowhere in Australia will ever get a Tetris machine [IMG]

Gamepad, mainly because that's what I learned on way back when. I'm practicing with a joystick, but I can't manipulate that as easily as a D pad, at least for now. Keyboard is fine for death, but the lack of zangi-moves make it less desirable for master.

  8. Funny you should mention that. Both mine and Jago's PCBs went on "vacation" in Australia for about 9 months before we got them. [IMG]

Fighting Game, TGM : only Arcade stick

SHUMP : Prefer Arcade stick, but gamepad is ok

Other : what the system propose is ok but sometimes, hmmm... with an arcade stick it could be better [IMG]

  11. If we're just talking about block-dropping games, then a gamepad is far easier than a keyboard. I just seem to be able to respond easier with one. But an arcade stick would probably be better.

I actually bought myself a PS2 pad and a USB adaptor a couple of days ago, so I can try Lockjaw with a control pad.

I will discuss other games as well, if you want... [IMG]

  12. voted for keyboard. because i played all mylive long on a PC. never had a c64+joystick (instead i had that strange Cplus4), never had amiga nor gameboy or whatever console. i was used to KC85 (eastern germany computer), 8086xt hercules graphics, 286er vga monochrome (oh my god - i played monkey island in grey-colors [IMG] ), 386er with 4mbyte ram ( wow: comanche with that voxel graphics was a technological miracle back in these times), later the first athlon and so on.

so i'm a die hard keyboard fan. i like the most these REAL keyboards of the goldenold times with real electrical micro switches for each key! oh holy crap that is sold nowadays: rubbergum making contacts, with rubbish pressure points, no clear click feedback etc...

(anyone here knows keyboard manufacturers still making keyboards with electrical switches for every key? )

my biggest wish: if consoles (especially Wii) would finally be able to detect usb keyboards and mouses.

Did you have brothers or sisters? What kind of game did you play with them? Did it involve sharing a keyboard? Or were you rich enough to have multiple computers and LAN games? Or were all your games single player, where the competition is for the high score list?

    Model M.

Some PlayStation 2 games such as RPG Maker 2 and that MMORPG can use a keyboard, and so can Xbox 360's Xbox Live UI. Linux for PLAYSTATION 3 can use the keyboard and mouse.

  14. i mostly played single player tetris ( i even programmed my own tetris clone in 1993 in qbasic , 320x200 pixel 256 colours mode and reached the 64kbyte executable size limit - but all sources and exe and media lost due to harddisk crash [IMG] this 93 clone already had cascade gravity falling pieces using a floodfill algorithm ), but i played alot with my 2 best friends a game called BITRIS. this was a cooperative two-player tetris in MS-DOS and we had lots of fun sitting together on a single keyboard. hence i have implemented some rudimentary bitris clone in my current tetris clone gravytris.
this year i discovered quadra.sourceforge and played a bit with my girlfriend. it was a tough competition because my girlfriend is from western germany and was trained on a gameboy and Supernintendo.
but i still managed to keep up with her [IMG]

cool ! model m. even has a wikipedia site [IMG] thanks for the tipp! must look around to get one.
oh - i didnt know that. but it would be even finer if any game would support keyboard inputs and or mouse.

  15. classically trained here, so keyboard. bowep, tnet, and quadra all the way.

The reason i asked is, i recently got a joystick. After playing with the joystick for a while i desided that anyone who doesn't like playing tetris with a joystick is crazy. The joystick is so fluid it makes zangi moves 10x easier. After playing with the joystick for a half hour i was able to increase my bpm by 10.

  17. @cdsboy: what kind of joystick is that? could you write a mini-review?

  19. I'm actually about to pick up two of those myself. They're basically the best arcade joysticks you can buy in a US store. I tried out my friend's last night with some fighting games, and it felt very nice. He also got a Real Arcade Pro 2, which is a little nicer, but I can't argue with the price of the T5 Hori.

  20. If you're not using it for anything other than puzzle games, be sure to unscrew the bottom and change the stick's mode to 4 directions by rotating the translucent plastic guide mounted in the base of the stick.
