Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles

  1. Hi there.
I would like to recommend a puzzle game to you by the name "Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles". The best way to go about this is probably to show you a video of decently skilled gameplay first:

The game came to be because two guys from costa-rica wanted to make a fast paced block-swapping puzzle game without the typical downsides of most block swapping puzzle games. Like almost all of the popular block-swappers, it is based on combos and chains. Because every second line in the game is staggered it somewhat looks like Hexic on first sight, but it's not really comparable to Hexic (or any other puzzle game for that matter).

I made a tighly packed explanation video for the main game-mechanics some time ago, but if you already plan to play it anyways, feel free to not watch this. It is not required, the game has pretty good in-game tutorials on most of the stuff (or explains them in the story mode).

However, this doesn't touch on some of the in-depth stuff that will only matter to hardcore players. For example in Tetris there's the in-depth mechanic of wallkicking that most people don't know about. In Wind&Water an example of such a mechanic would be 1-tick rotations. Basically while you rotate blocks nothing on the board will pop, ergo if you rotate blocks every tick (30/s) you could still chain after the blocks already dropped or after your chain timer ran out. You can use the same mechanic to set up 5x, 6x and 7x elementals.

I fully expect that no one in this forum has ever heard of this game, because it was originally released for the GP2X and as an indie Dreamcast game. However, it came out for PC a few years after that and is totally free on PC. There is also a semi-official version for Linux somewhere around the interwebs, which seems to run flawlessly.
The PC-version can be downloaded on http://wind-water.net/

  2. I may have heard of the game, check my avatar haha! :D
Had a lot of fun with it back in the day.

Bought this game for GP2X when it was first released. I also have a pandora (and will buy the pyra) and can play it with ginge.
