The Introduction Thread

  1. Hello all! I am nonederstand from Melbourne, Australia. I don't imagine there are many of us Australians around!

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? ^^

I began playing Tetris in high school during 2010 as a way to take a break from study. I started with Tetris DS and quickly became addicted before moving into Tetris Friends (RIP) and more recently TGM3.

I don't consider myself great - maybe above average compared to the regular guideline player. If it is any context, I began playing TGM3 in April 2019 and am currently qualified at S4. My best game is an S6.

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

Currently I play TGM3 (Classic rule) and a little bit of 99 and Tetris Effect. I try to get a few runs of Master Mode in every one or two days. I love the grind of it all and keep a reasonably comprehensive spreadsheet to track my progress :)

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?

Mostly CSGO with friends or some other multiplayer title. I recently got a Switch, so I'm enjoying some titles on there too.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?

Not really - I'm awful at Puyo!

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

    The wiki!

    Thanks for having me!

  2. Another Aussie!! Who is no where near me, but it's still exciting! And you seem to have about as good of a sleep schedule as I do too!

I'm kind of curious about your spreadsheet that you use to track your progress, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Do you play TGM1 and TAP? The general advice is to learn in those two and then jump to TGM3 because TGM3 introduces some nice kicks that aren't in TGM1 and TAP.

  3. I am actually on holiday in Europe right now, hence the time!

My spreadsheet is set up for set up for a few things:
    • Recording notable games - the definition is subjective, but is generally any game that is toward improvement in grade or total levels. I also record average levels/min as a general metric of improvement - it seems to be pretty reliable so far.
    • Tracking the "current average" (across the last 7 games) of my account. This way I know when I am eligible for promotion.
    • An analysis tab breaking down the delays of each speed level. This helped me contextualise a lot of the game and aids to understand what aspects I need to focus on.
    • Logging progress at specific speeds in Texmaster. Nothing fancy here.
    • Logging progress in Shirase. I don't play this mode much though.
I may clean up the sheet a little and put it in my signature when I am home.

I hardly play TGM1 or TAP. I'm used to the I piece kicks in TI, so I find them unintuitive. My stacking strategy is used to having more piece previews and a hold button as well...

  4. Ah, I guess I'm still the only one with this horrible of a sleep schedule then. I hope you're enjoying your holiday!

I think that's probably a pretty interesting spreadsheet. I've kind of regretted not recording the level in every game of death I've played, I've almost even got it set up to automatically do it. It sounds like you're somewhat close to that than I am with recording notable games.

No pressure to share your sheet at all, it is yours after all. But it's always interesting seeing other peoples data!

  5. Hi all, I'm new to tetris concept. For some reason the forum is banning my usual email address (protonmail addresses) so it took a while to get into the account I made a while ago with a gmail I no longer use :D

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? ^^

after beating Tetris 99 pretty reliably and seeing myself in Tetris99 streams i decided to finally try and get grandmaster rank in Tetris Grandmaster! So I'm on my third night of playing and at S1 and getting some linear progress so far I'm feeling good about :) first big step is also to try and make a 4-way arcade stick. I never really played NES era Tetris so its kinda throwing me off but I'm having a lot of fun working at it. I can beat anyone in VS tetris IRL that I know and within my online friends I can beat all of the as well, and in Tetris 99 i don't go a night without getting top 10 in maximus mode at least once.

    2. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?
Its just Tetris for me these days, I'm too busy with work to do anything else really, and I don't have the attention span for other stuff, even new Animal Crossing made me feel like "dang this feels stressful" lol.

    3. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?
For video games, I like Lumines, but I've 100% dropped it since getting into Tetris more. I play a lot of Go, though.

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

I was looking for a place with leaderboards to keep me motivated, also general advice on how to get better and improve.

I mean, at one point I was cleaning multiple spam registrations per day that used protonmail addresses. I could lift it to see if that particular wave of spammers has since given up, but for a while a blanket ban on that entire domain has made my life a lot easier.

  8. Hi all, I am Frank also know as SirMaser. I am from The Netherlands.
I am also the host of a podcast about Classic Tetris called the Piece Dependency Podcast.

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? ^^
I started playing Tetris on Tetris99 back in 2018 and I switch to NES PAL Tetris at the end of April this year. I imported a NTSC NES from the US and I am playing NTSC since mid July.

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?
My main focus is NES Tetris but I also play Tetris99 and Tetris for the 3DS

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?
    Legend of Zelda series <3

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?
    Not specifically

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

  9. Hey everyone, I'm TechnoFlare, a Twitch streamer and Speedrunner from Utah that you probably haven't heard of and I'm going to become a Grand Master. I know, hold your laughter.
Not a whole lot else to say about me, so let's get to the questions.

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player?^^
Not entirely sure, but I was around 8-9 and my mom let me play Tetris Friends (rip in pepperonis) on her Facebook account. I've been playing pretty much ever since then, so ~10 years, on and off. I do not consider myself a great player or even a good player, I'm pretty trash honestly, but hopefully I can fix that soon enough.

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?
Lately, I've been sticking to the TGM series, but I also play Puyo Puyo Tetris, Tetris 99 and, on rare occasions, the online clones like Tetr.io and Jstris. For how long depends heavily on the day and how I feel, but usually about an hour or two.

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?
Team Fortress 2 is a pretty big one, love the gunplay in it. I'm really into some shmups as well, Eschatos being the one I'm hyper-focused on at the moment. Racing games are big hits with me as well, favorites at the moment being the original Crash Team Racing and Sonic R, which I actually speedrun. Guitar Hero/Rock Band/Clone Hero are also some games that I absolutely adore. Still can't play the drums well though. Absolute favorite game though, Cave Story. Love it to death.

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?
Well, I enjoy Puyo Puyo and Puzzle Fighter II/Crystal Crisis, but I'm actually garbage at both. Can only fight against the CPUs and even that's a struggle. There's also Crossniq+ which I think is pretty neat, but it's a little strange and mainly single-player focused, which isn't everyone's thing.
If you consider Ikaruga a puzzle game, add one to the tally I guess.

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?
Found it on my own a couple years back, didn't think much of it, then was recommended it by an interview on KevinDDR a few days ago, while trying to get myself back into TGM.

  10. 1. I've been playing Tetris since I was 6. Years later, still enjoying the game! The reason why I started was because I just found it fun, I guess. TBH, I'm not the best at Tetris lol.
    2. NES Tetris, TETR.IO, Jstris, Tetris 99, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, etc.
    3. Minecraft, Rubik's Cubes (if that counts as a game lol), etc.
    4. Don't know much of any others, really. But there is a rhythm game mixed with Tetris called Chextris coming out soon, and it looks cool!

  11. Well, this has been long overdue.

Hi, I'm Aero! I'm a musician, graphic designer and video editor who runs a YouTube channel called Chronosaga, focused around Tetris and other puzzle games.

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player?
I started playing cause I thought the game was fun and wanted to get better at it. I started playing around 2018-2019 but didn't get into the community aspect 2020.
    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?
I started with the tetris.com version back in 2018 and later bought Game Boy Tetris in 2019. I ended up getting into a bunch of different versions of Tetris during 2020, starting with NES & Tetris DX and then moving to Guideline and eventually TGM, and I played them all religiously. Nowadays, I mainly play TAP and Jstris, but I occasionally go back to NEStris or DX.
    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?
I'm a big fan of the Portal series, and ended up 100% both Portal 1 and Portal 2 for PC, but I've yet to do it for my 360 copy and the companion collection. I also play Splitgate and NERTS Online.
    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?
I've played a little bit of everything, but I really enjoy Puyo Puyo, Panel De Pon/Tetris Attack and Sen-Know.
    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?
I found about TC through The Absolute Plus discord in 2020! Despite being relatively new, I'm somewhat familiar with the long history of the forums through a bunch of research that I did for my channel.

I'm super happy to be here!

  12. Hello there everyone :)

I'm Shuwoh (Shuwow is actually just a typo lmaoo) ! I'm a Site Realibility Engineer and a passionate hardocoregamer that also love to play Tetris !

    1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player?

I played a lil bit of Tetris as a child, but came back relatively lately with Tetris NES, TE:C, Tetrio and Tetris 99. I'm still quite bad to the Game but I'm slowly reaching the 1minute treshold on 40 line sprints and the 400k on marathons

    2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play?

As I said, mainly TE:C, T99, Tetrio and Tetris NES ;)

    3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ^^) keep you busy?

I played more than 450 games in the last 8 years, and the list keeps getting bigger. I love all types of games but some of my favorites would be Street Fighter, Ghost Trick, Ace Attorney, Grim Fandango or The beginners guide :)

    4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy?

I do like Puyo Puyo aswell :)

    5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept?

I heard of the forum on a article about Kevin Birell :)

I'm glad to be here with you, and hope I'll be able to fit and contribute well into this great community ! :)
