Manufactured Distraction

  1. So one thing I've noticed about myself is that I play better when my conscious mind is distracted. For instance, listening to music while daydreaming or listening to audiobooks seems to improve my play. I was wondering if the same is true for anyone else and if so, what do you use to distract yourself?

  2. Humming the music through my teeth.

  3. I try not to think about distracting myself volountarily, even though when it happens that not thinking about my game 80 90% of the time makes me more consistent.

I just play and play. I also try and enjoy the sound of the game, even if I have no idea if the sounds of the blocks actually help me focus or understand more stuff.

Technically, if I play all day long, my performance graph during a day does something like this (scientifically proven) :

    Code:
                            /\
                            / \
    ---- / \
        \ / \
         \ / \
          -- / \
            \-----------
0 minutes 1 hour .... Lots of hours

So yeah, I have a distraction in my opinion, but I would say it's made by the game's distractions themselves

  4. my curve is almost the exact same! i listen to music or a TED talk or radiolab when i play and it works well to distract me, but not too much.

  5. So I did some testing with this over the weekend and I found that a low-level distraction works the best. I tried an audio book, music with lyrics, music without lyrics, and mind-numbing silence. I found that a combination of music without lyrics and a liberal amount of daydreaming seemed to yield the highest scores. I tried the in-game music, but after a while it melts my brain, so I replaced it with movie soundtracks.

  6. Hmm the French like their brains to be melted.

Much like Cyberguile would say : "Do not THINK, FEEL!"

  7. i couldn't agree more. i even got it tattooed on my wrists a while ago...
