I've been thinking about the highest score one can get without a (combo) bravo and I believe it's around 550.000. This should be doable for those with times around 03:15 or with a score over 450.000 in TAP Normal. Amnesia and colour_thief could definitely do it.

I'll try to get GM in Normal mode soon. ;)

    Lucky?

I improved my previous best 3 times in about 45 minutes. When I began this session I immediately noticed the unusual low time while comboing. So after playing some games for a higher score I tried to do some time attack while only going for tetrises. It seems I also improved on that front!

I will try to make a video of my new highscore asap! Oh and still no bravo...

    @rednefed:

The link in my previous post is the best know performance by Amnesia from a year ago. He told me he could do better as that was a result he got after only 3 or 4 games. I just linked to it as I saw you updating the leaderboard with other member scores. ^^

Updated this leaderboard for you. ;)

    Sub 12 minutes!

I achieved this great result after only 3 games. The first 2 ended under level 100 because of mistakes while trying to combo. It feels good to get this kind of time knowing I wasn't pushing myself all that much. This is my first GM performance after getting GM in TGM last month. Confirmation is always good even though it's not in TGM. ^^

    Here is a save file with the GM game and all my Novice mode games above 500.000 (also included my fastest game). And sorry for not delivering the video as promised. ^^;

Nice time Burbruee. If that's your first try then you will have no problem doing even better.

Anyone else interested in a Novice mode time attack leaderboard? Maybe rednefed could add it over here? Or I could create a new thread with 2 different leaderboards for TEX Novice and TAP Normal. ^^

  11. Re: [Texmaster] Novice and Normal

Well, I'm not sure of the value of time-attacking Novice, since it's really a score attack and Master mode is where fast, efficient play should be focused. Sure, there're no levelstops but that doesn't change much: it's just 300 levels of sub-1G play.

    That said,
    300 @ 3:04:45 (421336) with 18 tetrises, 4 doubles, and a triple.

  12. Re: [Texmaster] Novice and Normal

I don't even want to try and play Normal in Texmaster, since everyone else here is GM.
/me doesn't want to be the only one who is not :p

    I'll stick to Novice. ^^

Fixed Burbruee's position on the leaderboard. And added the replay of my best game in the comment section.

I guess you're right. I was looking for a new challenge in Novice and Normal mode as it's getting very hard to do even better unless I get a bravo. TAP Normal is so much harder, but I will see if I can do better in the near future. As for Novice mode, if I can get 563472 without bravo, only comboing until the early 200s and with that time then I see no reason why better players wouldn't get very close to the 600000 mark or even break it. But you will need to be very lucky with the piece sequence like in my case. ^^

Wow slightly better than the time I got a month ago:

    Turn off the sound! ^^

Any idea how fast the best could clear this? Around 02:40?

There's no shame in participating. I was S7 for a long time over here. Posting shameful performances of myself motivated me to improve. Also please do share your save file as I'm interested in seeing your and everyone else's Novice mode play.

That's how I feel about Special / Special Ti / Sudden / Sudden Ti.
I'm always fighting at the bottom of the tables and it's great fun once you get a new record. But truth to be told I'm just not enjoying TGM1 as much.

It's just so frustrating to play before 20G kicks in. And since you can't slide pieces in because of no hard drop and instant lock after soft drop it just adds to the frustration when playing pre-20G.

So I pretty much get so frustrated with how slow it is to play and that you either have to soft drop it half way and wait for it to drop on it's own (sloooooooow...) so you can slide it in, or the other option is to just drop it and create a hole in your stack every time a situation like that appears.

Because of all the frustration with the mode, I barely ever survive to 20G even.
Maybe I'll try it again after I get my S5 on Special Ti, though. :)

    Re: [Texmaster] Novice and Normal

I never really had much trouble with the sub level 300 part of TGM. It might be boring to some, but having spent quite some time playing a lot of old school Tetris games the annoyances you mention are less of an issue for me.

On the other hand play between level 300 and 500 is truly frustrating and requires hard work to overcome.

I'll give you a few suggestions:

    • Instead of playing from the start all the time spend more time playing starting from level 300 and level 500. Play, play and play until you feel you're getting better. Normally you should improve drastically when you decide to play for real again. You may need some time to get more consistent again though.
    • Don't play the same way all the time. Play time attack sessions where you push yourself to the limit by manual locking like crazy . Other times don't manual lock at all or less and take your time to stack cleanly for tetrises.
    • Play very safely. This is you need to try and keep the stack low if you're not great at correcting messy situations at the top. Don't take any unnessesary risks. Let's say you have problems getting to level 500. What I would do is just play without looking at grade or time. With time you will get better and can afford to take more risks to improve your records. You need to get comfortable with your current level first before hoping to perform even better.
Having less time now for Tetris, I had to change my way of playing. I can't afford to spend hours to get a higher grade, level or time. So I spend my time wisely practicing my weaknesses. After I feel a better player I concentrate on a game mode for a while. In most cases I manage to make some great improvements after only playing a few games. Look what I have done in TGM. I was stuck with S9 after finishing the game. After a week I stopped playing the mode and focused entirely on my 20G play, which I knew was the problem. I spend a few weeks playing sessions of 30 minutes to an hour max. And when I decided to try for GM again I did it quite fast and with little effort.

Take it from me anyone can get GM in TGM given enough time, practice and determination. So good luck. ^^

  16. Re: [Texmaster] Novice and Normal

It's clear my TGM rotation (not Ti style) 0G play needs to be improved. I play way too much 20G and/or 3 previews + hold. Should be able to clear Novice sub-3 minutes...

    Re: [Texmaster] Novice and Normal

There are some tactical setups you can use to avoid having to slide. Here are a couple of examples, just to give you some idea of what you can do. In both cases, you clear with a triple, which costs virtually no time at all compared to a tetris. If you use your imagination, I'm sure you can come up with ones of your own.

    Re: [Texmaster] Novice and Normal

I don't really use the methods demonstrated in Edo's fumen. Probably becuase of my limited stacking insight. I prefer using overhangs which I'm getting more comfortable at. I would have created overhangs near the tetris hole in both cases. Or I would have covered the tetris hole in both cases. Especially in the second example because there is no effort needed to correct the situation very fast.

Soft dropping is indeed frustrating. but with some practice you will be able to execute it very smoothly. It's just a question of good timing and being patient. But I understand that having the piece lock prematurely often or losing a big amount of time trying to execute it correctly is a reason to avoid sliding in OG.

Nice time rednefed. I will join you too and try to get sub 3 minutes! ^^

  19. Re: [Texmaster] Novice and Normal

Edo's point is that you don't create an overhang. Instead you create a hole in the 9th column or block off your well temporarily, because the problem can easily be fixed without losing much speed.

It works for more than just low-G TGM1 as well. If there's no easy overhang to make because the stack is a bit messy, or there's nowhere convenient to place a piece, it's quite useful sometimes to block off the hole or make a hole in the 9th column and then just avoid stacking too much on top of it.

  20. Re: [Texmaster] Novice and Normal

It's like the SZ start in guideline games - platform for a tetris instead of softdropping to save valuable time.

Anyway, I went for score attack again:
