  1. Tetris friends does not have complete custom das/ar. It has presets. If the presets don't match your ideal settings then you have no choice but to play a game like blockbox if you want to play comfortably. On top of that AR that isn't instant is completely obsolete compared to instant. There is too much line clear delay which is why people like maserati don't have the top record, his style of stacking involves a lot of skimming.

There are many times when inputs don't pick up or take a while to kick in. I have had this problem on every browser I have tried (Firefox, opera, chrome, IE). Target garbage is completely luck based which is why even good players top out frequently in FFA.

TOJ is still not ideal but it has unlocks for line clear delay and soft drop which make it more tolerable/enjoyable for a lot of TF-haters. If you like TOJ then you have a bit more tolerance for TF because its very similar. People who take advantage of all the great concepts of blockbox usually dislike playing TF because you can't get anywhere near your potential speed. And people who really like blockbox can get annoyed from line clear delay on TF. TF line clear delay may be short as some argue, but it makes a huge difference to blockbox players, we are usually punching inputs as soon as a line clears, and on TF our inputs could be eaten up as the line is clearing.

remember he didn't want to play blockbox or nullpomino because they were not very popular, not because they had crappy game play. Therefore you trying to convince him to play blockbox or nullpomino is completely pointless. He wants to play a game were he can actully have people a lot of people to play against.
On another topic this forum is on tetrisconcept no longer condones tetris clones not on what is a good place to play tetris.

  3. Okay, I usually only come here to post my personal records. And now I'm not allowed to anymore so-- ban my account please. I won't be coming here in the future. This is my last post, I no longer wish to be part of this site.

I'll probably stop playing tetris altogether, because of all the bullshit concerning TTC, Arika, how it's illegal to create a basic tetris game these days not to mention using the word TETRIS in your game. So much legal crap concerning one of the simplest of game designs today, so simple it's a common project for rookie game programmers just starting to get into making their own games. And now I'm not even able to discuss such things on an internet forum made by and for the fans.

Besides, clones seem more common here in the west, at least that's my impression since the TGM-games are Japan-only and relatively hard to obtain outside of Japan. At least the Japanese can still go to arcades and play the damn game. In my country I haven't seen an arcade in 15 years. Not even a pinball machine in the local pizza or video renting place. Nope, haven't seen it since I was a kid. (heck, we can't even rent video games anymore, haven't seen that since the N64/PS1 days, disappeared soon after that and started to disappear already during or towards the end of the SNES-era)

To legally play TGM(3) you need to make a special delivery from Japan. It will set you back over $2,000 USD. Not something most average or even hardcore fans will ever do for many reasons. (probably even has one of those disclaimer screens saying not to be sold outside of Japan too.. which might make it not legal to even import..)

I don't know how common clones are exactly in Japan. But it seems more common over here. We're not part of the market for TGM, it's not being sold here so it doesn't matter if we "pirate" it by using clones. I think there were other reasons behind the cancellation of TGM4.

I wish TGM was available worldwide, that there were cheap and legal ways to obtain the games (Arcade and PC version for example. I would be fine with a monthly fee for such a title) and that TTC would let Arika do whatever the hell they want to do with their game.

As I said above, this is my last post here. So you would see why it would be pointless to start arguing with me. Just ban me and have fun not discussing clones and not posting mame records.

Good Bye. But.. Let's go better next time.

  4. You can have fun not posting your MAME records, just like you can also have fun not fucking reading the first post of this thread. MAME isn't a clone.

  5. And if you would in turn read his post, he won't be around to read your reply, so...

I still say we need to make our own clone.

We need to talk to the folks at gamedev.net, gamasutra and places like that. The swedish Pirate Party would gladly give us serverspace for multiplayer. TTC would not be able to shut us down, not in a million years.

GFX and SFX are no problem. We just need to find a competent coder looking for a fun challenge. 10 years ago I would've done it myself, but I'm too old and lazy these days.

Tetris is really a VERY simple project you know.... I'm surprised there are so few clones, with none being good enough. Nullpo is a good effort, but I feel it's already bloated, and not nearly polished enough.

I really don't understand those of you supporting this crap. You're like scared little kids. I don't care whatever happens now.... I'm quite content with TAP on MAME and looking forward to a cracked TI. But for those who care about the community and want good multiplayer, I think it's quite obvious what needs to be done.

  8. Does it matter whether we get shut down or not? Are people willing to respond to the repeated C&D letters, lawsuits and demands to appear in court?

You do realise, as was mentioned in the thread with the EA licence fee, that TTC charge hundreds of millions of dollars for people to use the licence to make Tetris games. If they just let someone make a Tetris fangame and it goes unpunished, then what's to stop EA just making games without the licence? And if that happens, then suddenly TTC are losing literally millions of dollars in revenue and will struggle to have a business any more without making the games themselves.

We might have the skills to create an awesome game, or at least find people who can, but it's a different thing entirely to find someone who is willing to put their life and career on the line to defend the repeated lawsuit action. You can't just ignore lawsuits and they go away, and clearly TTC would be prepared to employ a pretty heavy-hitting legal department given the amount of money that is at stake for them, and the fact their entire business model revolves around that licence and defending it.

You have to realise that even if you're confident of winning a civil court battle over something like this, because TTC don't really have the rights to anything more than the name, then that still doesn't mean it's not an issue. These things can drag on for years, and just finding the funds to keep it going to defend it is hardly difficult. You only need to look at cases like Robert Kearns to see that even if you've clearly got the winning argument, when you're trying to face a huge corporation then it can consume your entire life just to see out the court case.

It's easy enough to say "man, I wish someone else would do all this shit because someone totally could." If you want it done, then maybe you should be the one who is prepared to face the legal wrath of TTC by aiming to make a polished, commercial clone. If you're prepared to stick your employability on the line, and to have to cough up tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees, then I'm sure there are more than enough people here who will support your endeavour. Speculation is meaningless if you're just waiting for someone else to take up the reins, because we've all got our own lives to get on with, and the vast majority of us aren't accomplished programmers and/or game designers anyway.

You say you're surprised there are so few clones, which means that clearly you don't follow history of Tetris fangames, because there are plenty of clones out there, the difference is that they almost all get C&D bombardment from TTC and disappear the moment they start getting remotely popular (with the exception of N-Blox, which got TTC bombardment and then was bought up).

If there was demand for TGM beyond a small community here, it would be on sale outside of Japan. It's that simple. The desires of the masses are what's shaping the Guideline.

If we want legal TGM, we need to drum up demand, somehow.

Here's my silly idea on how to make TGM accessible to the masses, and make them think that yes, they can do it.

    0) Include a useful demo. TGM1 is great for this. It had a very nice demo that showed what you could really do, and demonstrated the game mechanics, including auto-synchro. It could be expanded upon, to show how the simple TGM wallkicks work, and the concept of zangi-moves (perhaps with a picture of Zangief if you can get the license? LOL).
    1) include a gimmicky easy mode or two. The ones from TAP and TI are good ones, because they give helpful items, or a nice little suggestion block to give you ideas where to put the piece. Achievements for clearing both of them, and some others for scoring well on them. However, they end too quickly, which leads to next idea.
    2) Have an intermediate mode. This mode would go to 999, but level 900 would be what 500 on TGM1 normally is. First slowdown at 500, and a more gradual speed ramping. It would have a visible credit roll, and would keep the ghost piece maybe all the way up to level 499. After the credits, it would suggest trying master mode. No grade, but at least an achievement for reaching 500, and another one for clearing it, along with a nice title to make them feel good about it.
    3) finally, we have your master and death inspired modes, with full on TGM grading. Possibly have these locked before you complete intermediate, or give a warning before starting them if you haven't cleared intermediate, to stop people who are not ready from blundering into them. Many achievements to be found here, in addition to the grading system.
    4) Sprint and Ultra, of course. Sonic Drop+T-Spin= scoring goodness. Either no ARE and short line clear delay, or no line clear delay, and short ARE for these modes.
    5) a few other random modes. Maybe Sakura, maybe Cascade, something else interesting and fun, but not as hard as Shirase.
    6) oh and some multiplayer. Include doubles for sure. :)

This something you think people would buy?

  10. Yes. (Casual) people would buy anything Tetris. Especially if it's aesthetically pleasing.

That's good, and it's a curse. Why should TTC change when people will buy anything Tetris?

I think the TGM games are beautiful. They have good original soundtracks. As far as Tetris games go, they're some of the few I'd see selling on looks alone. If I saw a TGM game next to a bright and colorful (and ugly) Tetris DS or Tetris Party, I would take TGM knowing nothing about it other than that it's Tetris.

I know their difficulty may turn people off, but (more choices of) easier modes would definitely take care of that. After all, even Tetris DS reaches 20G (I know it's much easier), but I haven't seen many complaints about it. Another thing that might turn people off is a lack of harddrop. Recently I was at a game convention and I set up my NES with LJ65 (I changed both sides to Bottom/ARS) at it and watched people play. Many people were very confused by up not locking. I actually HATE this mechanic myself. I always play 20G, because I hate going up/down for EVERY piece. Also, they'd need an endless mode (which you mentioned), since people expect that of Tetris. I really don't think that's the problem though. I think it's just too late.

Honestly the games would have been SUCH an easy sell as a console game, and many more people would probably have fought the guideline had they been released on a larger scale because they're so much better than the guideline games. Unfortunately, their first console game was released far too late, after they were already being choked by the guideline... Also. Japan only. sadface.jpg

Really, it'd be nice to have more companies with lots of money fighting the guideline, or refusing to buy the license if they can't use Arika mechanics, but I think most companies don't care nearly as much as Arika does. And... Arika may not be too happy about that, either.

Who knows, maybe one day someone here will get a job in the game industry or become a celebrity and get enough pull to make the public aware of TGM.:p

The public is aware, but many of them think it's too hard, because of how hardcore the invisible tetris video is.

What do you think the biggest tetris video is on youtube? It's TGM3 Invisible Tetris!

They see that, and many of them think "this man has no life" or "i'll never be that good" or "this is bs because you can slide the pieces around".

While the video has made them aware of it, it has made it seem less accessible to them.

A proper release, with easier modes, and a good demo like the original arcade would convince people otherwise, and show the value of sonic drop. That said, allowing people to swap the locking capabilities of hard and soft drop would probably be a good idea.

Or give them the choice of rotation systems, like TI did, but do SRS correctly.

And yes, endless should probably be included, speed curve advancing for every 10 lines cleared, and going all the way from level 0 tgm1 to max Shirase speed.

And yes, it would be wrong to sell clones of Arika's game without giving them a cut. They need to be involved.

I don't think you guys understand how much of a douchebag henk is.

If Cave shooters can generate revenue, you bet your ass that TGM could, given proper treatment. A "hardcore" tetris could exist alongside the main one without problems, either as a separate relase or extra modes. It won't happen, however. I think we already know enough and it's useless to make up scenarios now. Either "viva la revolucion let's steal tetris now" or "hey this is how TGM could get popular".

It's useless to discuss this. Either they get tired of chasing down freeware clones and Sega tetris can envolve further or we're stuckt with guideline forever. Congrats to color thief for making a step forward in the later. I really hope you play your move reset SRS game a couple times on your next trip to japan.

Last post here, at this point I don't think anyone will come forward and say "okay, I fucked up, it happens".

  13. I don't buy the "the guideline is choking TGM" argument. TGM4 showed every sign of being developed with uncompromised freedom to experiment with ARS. They had a whole new "magic fast button" that wasn't even available for SRS players! The only thing that might have been seen as a compromise, is that it had move reset. But I think Mihara made it clear on his blog that this was a voluntary design choice, and that the entire game was being balanced with it in mind. The world has yet to see a proper, balanced, hardcore move reset game. I think they could have pulled it off, personally.

  14. Oi, oi, oi! I didn't know MAME wasn't clone, hence I was asking about records. No need to get all flustered. D:

    :o

Why I'd never! I may have found Nintendo Tetris aesthetically pleasing but I wouldn't buy it! :V

It's like you can read my friends' minds...Well, almost. Hahaha.

More like I can read the comments.

While plenty of people will enjoy the challenge, and many of the people who are used to old versions of tetris would enjoy the game if they gave it a chance, most of TTCs customers are the type of person who posts the sorts of comments I mentioned.

My suggestions from above would go a long way towards not scaring people off of the game i think. :)

  19. So KeyBlox is still considered a clone even thought the pieces don't fall, eh? Dang, I guess that means King of Stackers has no chance of slipping through on a technicality, then.

  20. This is such a contradiction that makes no sense... so earlier on the forums (past 2-3 years) we were discouraged from openly sharing the MAME emulator + TGM2 or ZiNC + TGM1 because doing that IS literally copyright infringment/pirating. Talking about + sharing "clones" was fine and encouraged.

Now, talking about + sharing "clones" is discouraged or "banned", and using the emulators and actual TGM ROMs is ENCOURAGED?

On top of that, someone mentioned the best way to get TGM4 released worldwide is to "drum up" support and increase demand... do you really think that would ever happen WITHOUT the widespread sharing of Tetris clones which mimic the unique japanese style of gameplay??? Using a clone is 10 times easier to the average computer user (install and go), and it is arguably more legal -- by not using a downloaded copy of a copyrighted video game.

 This is the stupidest shit ever. D:
