Nope, I'm horrible haha. I bought the game on the first day it was out and played it for maybe 3 hours total. Thanks muf
1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? I started playing around 1991 or 1992 (when I was about 2-3 years old), when my parents bought me a Game Boy and Tetris (which is probably how 98% of Western adult Tetris players got into it). My thoughts were, "it's a video game, I shall play it!" A lot of people who see me play TGM think I'm some sort of insane Tetris god. In relation to them, that may be true. But compared to people here, I'm decent at best. 2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play? The TGM series, usually about a few hours per week. I've also started playing NES Tetris thanks in no small part to Kitaru (who, as many regulars know, I go to college with). SJSU has a TGM1 cab so sometimes I pop a few quarters into that after class, along with 1-2 rounds of Pop'n 14 or DDR SuperNOVA. 3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ) keep you busy? Various shmups; I'm currently in the Shmups Forum STGT (Shooting Game Tournament) 2010 as part of the team League of Generally Nice People, along with KevinDDR and others. I also play various rhythm games, like DJMAX Technika, Beatmania IIDX, and Project DIVA. Once in a long while I'll play nth-person shooters like Quake Live or S4 League. 4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy? Not really. I play Columns, but very very casually. I have Planet Puzzle League but I play the beginner way (vertical with stylus and with mid-chain lift enabled) so that does not count. 5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept? While looking up info on Tetris DS back in summer 2006 or so, I came across TC's wiki. I read a little about Arika Rotation System (the name "Arika" caught my eye, as I've played their PS2 port of DoDonPachi dai-ou-jou), but didn't really get into TGM for a while, nor did I join TC until late 2008. Other things about me: - I used to go by "gs68". Now I go by "Ray Ayanami" here and on Twitter, and "Raydere" on other parts of the Internet. - I'm studying computer science, and by extension, aspects of programming. I want to develop games, but I don't have the skills necessary to produce games of good quality yet. - I'm also studying Japanese, and will be finished with my 3-year Japanese minor this spring. My practical uses for it so far go as far as translating stuff on Danbooru and interacting witih Japanese-speaking Twitter users that I follow. - I regularly see Kitaru, CrazedRevenG, and Aru-san, have hung out with DDRKirbyISQ, DIGITAL, and Monte at Tetris meets, and met KevinDDR, TWF, and myndzi up in Seattle. - Speaking of Seattle, I went to Sakura-Con this year for my one chance in a long time to play Ti. As for whether I'll return next year is uncertain; I'll see if I can make it but chances aren't very good right now because: - 1. It's smack dab in the middle of the semester, as opposed to this year when it was at the tail end of spring break - 2. Unless I can get more roommates, going to SC is quite expensive ($220 for airfare, $150 for room with 2 roommates, $50 for badge, and $??? for food and whatever swag the dealers' and artists' halls can seduce me into buying). - I have initials ADD. I use REI, UBR, and LEN.
Hi there! 1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? I started playing Tetris in about 2004 when I bought a NES with the official Nintendo Tetris. I have been infected with the Tetris system since my early childhood, but I never managed to buy the game until six years ago. I got familiar with some TGM videos on the net, found some information and finally got to play it (TGM 2 and 3) for the first time when I was in Japan in August 2007. It was just great to see how hard TGM really is if you play it yourself for the first time when you were used to the ultra skilled Arika promo videos. I also had the chance to watch ZAB(Japanese player) rocking TGM3TI at HEY!Akihabara and a friend of mine made this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUMMFIBUBWA I'm not that much of a great player, but I am eager to become one. I am lacking a proper way to emulate any TGM game (it runs at 20fps or so, awful), but I play Disney's Magical Tetris Challenge a lot. It's based on VS. play against a computer, but it features an Arika licensed rotation system and therefore shouldn't get confused with just another stupid kiddie Tetris. It really is a great Tetris game, although not half as hard as any TGM. 2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play? Disney's Magical Tetris Challenge, the old Sega Tetris as well as Tetris Plus for Saturn/Arcade. I usually play about 2 hours in a row when I have the chance, the same goes for any other arcade-style game. 3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ) keep you busy? 2D-Shooters all the way. I love dodonpachi Daioujou, Battle Garegga and old Toaplan games (Tatsujin, Dogyuun, OutZone) - great music, insane difficulty. I completed Tatsujin (PCB ) on one credit up to 2-2, Daioujou 240mil up to 2-2 or so, b,6 score in Garegga. Tetris is a great practice for shooters as both genres demand tactical foresight and strategy as well as fast-paced reactions and improvisations. I think playing Tetris and a manic shooter at the same time (to which I count old Toaplan stuff btw) is a perfect combination of practice because basically they are demanding the same skills. 4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy? Not really, although I've tried out a lot. Puzzle Bobble is nice, but I can't stand Puyo Puyo, Cleopatra Fortune, Puzzle Fighter, Columns, Puchi Carat, that kind of stuff... playing them once a year is more than enough One block type game I love is Lup Salad for the old PlayStation 1 (there's also a recent sequel for the DS). But that fits more to the Sokoban style concept than to the puzzle games we're talking about. 5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept? I found out yesterday that TGM4 was cancelled by reading the thread on arcade-otaku.com and then did a little research on the TGM series. That's how I stumbled over Petit-Prince's article about TGM which I found really, really interesting. And then I found this forum and I knew that this would gonna go right to my bookmarks...
Welcome! I can sympathize with the emulation troubles. I couldn't run TGM1 on my computer full speed when I first tried it out, and it was years before I picked it back up again. My advice is that if you're using MAME for TGM1, try ZiNc. And, if you haven't already, see how TGM2 runs for you. I recall seeing that video. I don't think I realized it was ZAB, though! It's crazy seeing that compared to his latest Shirase records. Also, good to see the shmup/TGM fanbase overlap proved in classic style. You wouldn't happen to play a spot of Bemani too, would you?
Magical Tetris challenge actually licensed the ghost piece from Arika, as I recall. Also they worked a little on it i think because they are friends with capcom.
Zaphod that's misinformation. Arika has some ex-Capcom staff but did not develop MTC the game in any way. At that time Capcom held the Tetris arcade license so that's why Capcom has their name on TGM1.
i said "i think" about the latter, okay? That much was an opinion. I know I saw the credit for T.L.S. from arika, though. just wasn't sure exactly how much invovement there was beyond licensing the ghost piece.
I am currently using MAME OSX and I'm not sure what other ways there are to run ROMs with a Mac. I have an old Windows PC too, but not really the space to arrange both of them at the same time. Someone over at Assemblergames said it was ZAB. I have no idea what he looks like, but the guy seemed like he knows his stuff (he had Tetris-blocks as an avatar, that prooves it! ) I am not too much into Bemani, no. But the overlap is definitely there, I know that Japanese world record players like Kamui, KET and SWY (WR holders in Garegga, Daifukkatsu etc) play TGM regularly.
It is really funny. I like this current story of two separated sides, not enemy, completely opposed but still fan of Tetris at very high level. We are a bit like NATO and WARSAW PACT...
Hmm, you could give SDLMAME or ShmupmameTGM a shot, perhaps. I can't say whether they'll perform any better, but it's worth giving them a shot, I suppose. Yep, I saw his account logged in on-screen once you mentioned it. That's him alright. Haha, cool! I didn't know they played; I guess that's just more proof for the pile.
Hey everyone, I am new to this forum (posting wise). Although I've been reading this forum on and off for a while I think an Introduction is due and it's time for me to step out of the shadows. I usually go by Japairish or Jetu online and have only been playing Tetris for about a year on and off. My first real interest was watching a TDS tournament in a Japanese Mall watching an Idol mop the floor with shoppers. I've since passed on TDS and have watched numerous vids re TGM and I must say I was in shock at the level of difficulty in what I thought was such a simple game. I am now looking to try my hand and brain at what looks to be an intimidating challenge. I have read various wiki articles that are incredibly helpful, and I have read the current change in game support allowed in the discussion. I must say that taking a stand that goes against a large number of the community is incredibly admirable, and I want to support this community with my activity and hopefully one day I might be able to contibute to a site that has already taught me so much. Ok, I'm done with the hand job I hope to be posting respectable scores and times soon.
In 1989, the Tengen version. I also played Tetris NES at my uncle's, but I didn't own it. I've been playing on and off again for a fairly long time in the early 90s, then again in the early 2000s, and far more frequently since 2008. I consider myself a good player, but not a great one. Tetris NES, Tetris GB, Texmaster, Tetris Party [wii], Tetris Party Deluxe [DS], Tetris Splash [360], and I usually like to do at least one marathon run per day, with the occasional jaunt into multiplayer. Sin and Punishment: Star Successor, Street Fighter, Blazblue, Borderlands, Monster Hunter 3, Fire Emblem. Puzzle League/Tetris Attack, Dr. Mario (though I'm terrible at it), Meteos Wars, pretty much any action puzzle game I have access to. After getting Tetris Party for the Wii, I got flat out hooked on the game, and I constantly looked up other tetris information on the web. This site came up. After getting the DS version I came back here again and ultimately decided to join.
Welcome Japairish and deepshock. The TGM games are indeed very intimidating, but that makes the challenge to get good at them all the more interesting. Be patient because progress can be slow at first. I'm looking forward to your records. I had a lot of fun with Meteos on DS, but I haven't played it for a while now. I still play Puzzle League and Dr.Mario from time to time, but not nearly enough to get really good at the games. Anyway have a nice stay on the forums both of you.
1. Why did you start playing Tetris? My cousin had it for the gameboy and I played it from time to time. 2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play? Tetris for gameboy and Texmaster (got into it a few days ago). I dont consider myself a good player at all, although I do enjoy a lot playing. I barely manage to beat normal mode in Texmaster and I dont even complete the credits part consistently, but as I said I have a lot of fun trying. 3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ) keep you busy? Monster Hunter series on the PSP, Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, Touhou and shmups in ganeral (favs are Mushihime Sama, Dodonpachi, and Guwange). 4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy? Lumines for the PSP. 5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept? I saw that famous invisible tetris video on youtube and decided to investigate. I read a little on the subject and eventually found about this place. So that's it. Hello everyone!
Hello, tetrisconcept people, I'm hitstun. 1. Why did you start playing Tetris? Can you also please specify how long you have been playing and if you consider yourself a great player? Christmas 1989, I got a Game Boy and Tetris, as well as Nintendo's NES Tetris. If a Tetris competition happens in the Columbus area, I usually win it, but I realize I should reach out to better communities like this to bring my skill to the next level. Three years ago, I did a Tetris Splash systems tutorial video on YouTube, which has some neat tricks but I realize my multiplayer strategy was kinda crap. On Tetris Friends, I'm 100th percentile or platinum in every game mode, which ought to count for something. 2. What Tetris games do you play and how much do you play? Currently, I'm playing tetrisfriends.com twice a week or so. I'm trying to break 700,000 in Marathon and 1:00 in Sprint, and I've come really close in both. I play SRS games mostly, but every once in a while, I mess around with NDS_TGM, Texmaster2009, and various Lockjaw games. 3. What other games besides Tetris (if any ) keep you busy? I play way too many other games, so I never concentrate on one game long enough to reach the top levels of competition. I keep going back to Super Street Fighter IV, Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, the 2D Mario games, Melty Blood Actress Again, and Civilization Revolution. I need to play more shmups. My Backloggery page and my sig will tell you what I'm playing at the moment. Oh, and I do a Justin.tv stream where I play a different game every week and my friends tell me how bad I am at it. 4. Any other block/puzzle games you enjoy? I'm hooked on Bejeweled Blitz right now, mainly because my entire family plays it. I also play the Panel De Pon/Tetris Attack series, the Puyo Pop series, and Lumines Live. 5. How did you find out about tetrisconcept? When I saw people start using the "TC-" tag in Tetris DS, I googled it and arrived here. Now and then, I would come to look up information on TGM's systems or sometimes edit the wiki, but I don't think I've ever actually posted in this forum. I've recently noticed my fellow OLRmy members RayAyanami and KevinDDR chatting here, so I figured I'd follow suit. Besides, now I'll actually get to talk to people I've only met in Tetris Splash voice chat or my YouTube video's comments.
OLR buddy hitstun! Welcome to the site! Enjoy your stay! Wait wait wait, people still play RTCW:ET? I had no idea!!! Can I have some info on where that community is at? I loved that game!
