It isn't like they build the games to be obsolete or anything. There isn't really much in the way of incremental upgrades. If they can get people to keep buying the same game over and over, why not just add a few interesting features here and there?

nonsnese! there are always additional features to be added such as infinite

  4. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

Smash Bros says hi. It's better to sell 7M copies of a game every 6 or 7 years than a few thousand copies every year. The only recent exception is Tetris DS, and even then, it only sold about 2.5M in the four years it's been out.

Of course, the hardcore tetris demographic isn't too big (yet), so I wouldn't expect a TGM to start breaking millions out the gate. Still, it's there. We'd buy it, and alot of people new to TGM would buy it too. At the very least, they could integrate TGM mechanics in an "extreme" mode or something to guage interest.

  5. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

I think that was sort of the reason they included Master mode into TPD (and Tetris Zone back in the day), and that had very few players... at the very least, the leaderboard was pretty sparse. According to that, I was the fastest 20G SRS player in the world at one point. Totally not true :D

That being said, the only TGM mechanic that it borrows is 20G with decreasing lock delay, and that isn't a good representation of TGM as a whole. However, most people are generally not ready to take up that sort of challenge, and look at TGM as something that is way above them; something only people who dedicate their lives to Tetris (i.e. us) are capable of playing. And there's no point in putting those modes in games if nobody is going to play them, why waste the development time and resources?

If they want a bigger crowd to draw from in TGM4, they're going to have to find some way to bridge the gap. Perhaps the new "kindness" theme is an attempt at that. Perhaps move reset is also. I'm not sure. Maybe this is all being done to get new players to the series, to show that it is not a niche game, and then come back with a vengeance in TGM5...

Having a Smash Bros. type business setup would be nice, but TGM simply doesn't have the playerbase for it...

EDIT: Still in first on the TPD Master Time leaderboard with 3:57.90...

  6. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

Slow SRS 20G != TGM. If there was something remotely interesting about TPD Master, I probably would have bought the game for that mode alone.

  7. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

Man, every time someone posts in this thread I keep hoping that TGM4's release date has been announced.

I like reading too, sometimes :D

  9. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

I kinda forgot this was announced. Worth it to dive through the past few pages to look at any new info, or are there not many new things?

  10. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

@Zircean: Yeah I saw that. I wasn't trying to be redundant, haha. I think what I was trying to say (that didn't come across because I'm tired and not thinking about my posts) is that "TTC doesn't get it." I mean, TZ/TPD Master are modes that don't particularly appeal to anyone. If you're going to make a mode that is supposed to make a nod to the "hardcore scene," don't make it just as boring as everything else. I'm not even trying to say that it needs to be some tricky survival mode; I'm just trying to say that there should be something about it that keeps it from being the "same old, same old."

I wonder if they get that they can keep the lock delay and such lenient and tune everything else so it can be fast in the right hands.

  11. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

My guess is... kind of, because they *did* implement configurable DAS and such in TF and much prior in TOJ. And if I remember correctly, Hangame was incredibly fast for guideline as well. So... they know what to do, but I think they're still stuck on this "making things slower makes it balanced for everyone" shtick. Perhaps that's why TF's handicapping is so screwed up... maybe it's done on purpose to deal with the relative lack of speed caps...

  12. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

Yeah, that could be it. Even before custom DAS for every mode, the beta had a the weird parameter passing for custom DAS. Perhaps auto-handicapping was deemed less work than a decent matchmaking system.

I'm just talking about their ill-conceived 20G modes, though. Like, I'm thinking they could probably make lock delay suitably long such that survival isn't too punishing for new players, but have DAS/Clear tuned well over the course of the mode for the speedfreaks -- although probably not so "speedfreaky" that the new players are sending their pieces slip-sliding everywhere. I think there is some happy medium in terms of the speed settings that would allow higher level players to push things faster, while less experience players aren't kicked around by harsh requirements. Top that off with an interesting scoring system and the mode is starting to look pretty attractive.

  13. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

The only info since the location tests many months ago is relatively recent confirmation that it's not canceled. Not really anything worth digging through though.

I get this constantly as well! Though it's not really anyone's fault that there's no news on this front. At least, not anyone on this forum. :p Though I get the impression Arika will finally be done with the DOJ patch soon, so they may push out TGM4 thereafter.

  15. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

I wonder if the release of TGM4 will result in some very cheap TGM3 machines going for sale on the web?

  16. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

TGM3's price has been decreasing lately : now it's 100000 yens with a board and even less on YAJ.
    That's a good thing I guess.

  17. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

I doubt it, given how long it took TAP boards to come down in price. Unless your concept of "very cheap" is still several hundred dollars.

  18. Re: TGM4 Announced!!

So this game is cancelled now? Seems like it from the blog.

    Re: TGM4 Announced!!

I can't believe it. If I understand correctly then one of the reasons the game got supposedly cancelled according to Mihara, is because they can't get the game released outside Japan. Why would this be a problem now, when the previous games were only for Japan?
