2010 Resolutions

  1. That graph makes me feel a bit better about my sub-S1 games...

  2. I'm really excited to say I just did this!

  3. Set better resolutions :D

    TAP Death: 300.

I've made it to 300 in Heboris "Devil minus" mode using Ti-ARS rotation, but that's actually ALOT easier, since the I-piece doesn't get stuck ALL THE TIME.

I only play TAP now, and I can barely get to 200. It's not really the speed, It's the I-piece that fucks it up for me.

I'm still making progress, albeit slow, but compared to you guys I'm really quite old. The best players seem to be in their late teens/early 20's.

When I reach 300 I think I'll stop playing death. The increase in speed from then on it just too much for me.

This year I would like to be able to walk on my 2 legs for the first time !
And I also would like to reach 40mph on my bike.

    Sorry but it just sound...Unreal..

  6. You're not the first person to have this sort of reasoning, and (unless you're actually much older still) you're actually wrong. I'm 26, and jago is 33, and we're both Death GM. I can't speak for jago but I know I can crank out Death Ms easily in MAME, seemingly as easily as the real thing. And others who play it more have gotten GM.

So believe in yourself. :) The only stuff holding you back is a matter of learning, not any physical limitation.

  7. You get used to it. I also used to think that 300+ would be impossible to sustain. But as time went on, I grew from a total lack of confidence to a some kind of minimal control. In fact I found that funny, because it was very similar to the kind of feeling I got went I started Death ("omgomgomg that's fast, fast, FAST !"^) .

Keep faith ! Progress will be slower than with TGM, but progress will be made.

  8. Sounds like a "they are young teen students who have nothing else to do than play tetris"
I may not be in the top of the tops here, but still have a decent level. And you know what ? Got a Ph.D and recall my teenage years with a lot of nostalgy

I don't know about the majority of people, but becoming confident at DEATH 300 has been for me the 2nd hardest challenge of TGM after the M ROLL.
    Everything else comes alone.

I remember that I've used a savestate (now we have the cheat and clones) for almost 1 week to practice DEATH 300 speed in forcing on the manual lock.
That was really hard and depressing but some parts of TGM really need to be forced for improvement.
Same thing for the M ROLL, I often think that I will never do it and continue to improve everything else. I know that if I don't change my way of practice, which is currently to play long session and nothing else, I will never do it, or I will but it will take me 4 years instead of a few months..

I got my first M rank on April 2007, and DEATH 300 is still a problem for me today.
(I mean : in playing like a man, for people who may be tempted to think that I suck)

Thanks for the encouraging comments! It's good to know my brain isn't at it's TGM-limit just yet! I'm 33 in case anyone cares.

From what I've read, younger players (this goes for all videogames) tend to rely on superfast synaptic connections, while older players play "smarter", using their experience more efficiently.

Top FPS players are usually in their 20's, but in FPS's reaction times are extremely important.
Top chess players on the other hand are rarely under the age of 30, and I thinks it's indicative of how the brain works.

TGM is something of a mix. It's deeply strategic, while also very fast.

Oh this is one of the most beautifull thing I ever read. :'(

No seriously, this is exactely what I think, when I watch a game from kevin, I can't prevent myself to think that my style is more advanced, but the guy can survive longer at faster speed. (he is 17 and I am 25)
And we can affirm that the oldest players on TAP (me, jago, c_t, edo...), are the most accurate and mature.

well, I have you by about half a decade.. it's hard for me to get myself to play faster.. but I can now cool 0-500 and rarely get regrets.. the thing is that the speed increase is faster when you play faster so now the game kicks my ass much sooner then it used to. I was consistently getting into the 7-800s when I was getting ranks 4 and 5s, now that I'm getting S3 and S4s I never make it to 600. However I hit 20 G earlier so I'm in 20 G for nearly the same number of levels.

I'm hoping to get to 500 in under 5 minuets soon in Grade Mania 3

  13. Current goals:
    TGM GM before april
    TGM Sub 12 minute GM
    TAP Master S6
    TAP Death level 300

Other long term goal: Beat one of "an ass's" GM times on our machine

  14. I never posted these but I did make a list.

    Goals for TGM in 2010

    TGM1:

    Easy Classic 1400 Hanabi
    Sakura Classic ALL
    Master Classic MM
    Master Classic MK qualified
    Shirase Classic 1300

    34sec 40 Lines

This is going to be a long and difficult year, but I'm beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel...

Err... look at this page again http://ratings.fide.com/top.phtml?list=men

You should try to play slower but more carefully IMHO: it would help you to increase your survival rate. Practice TGM1 20G mode for example, try to play for score, do tetrises...

  16. Amnesia

    Amnesia Piece of Cake

I just think that this time, you exagerate...You will know a struggling period, and I will take benefice of this to show you that experience is stronger than young and insolence speed and energy..o_O

  17. Let's see. I posted on page 1 when I had not played TGM for months and had no will to resume playing. But it just came back to me ~3 weeks ago so..

    TAP:
Master --> I'd like to get within the S3-S5 range, I've been stuck at S1 since 2007. But since sometime last year I now play only this game.
And I've said this for years now.. BUT I REALLY WANT TO SURVIVE TO 999 ! [IMG]

T.A Death --> In Octomber, I survived to 300 for the first time ever. And it felt great.. I've since succeeded in getting there two more times. I'd like to be able to get that far more often and survive longer once I get there. (for now I fail almost the instant I get there)

Yes. That is all. Like I said I play TAP exclusively now.

  18. Ai

Quite modest resolution compared to the rest. I got under 5 minutes 10 days after I started playing the game. Sub 4 minutes shouldn't be too hard for you if you're willing to put in the time. ^^

  19. Changed my mind. I'll still play TAP Master & T.A Death the most probably. But I will also give room for Ti Master clones. (with Nullpomino as my clone of choice for Ti)

    So here's the new stuff.

    >= S3 TAP Master (current record.. 1 I think)
    >= S6 Ti Master (current record.. S4 I think)
    >= 350 T.A Death (current record right after 300)
    (>= S6 TGM1) (current record unavailable)

I hope I will be able to to reach some of these goals. What worries me is I've been playing since '07 and greatly improving in speed/time/technique since then, but not so much in actual grades. I first got "1" in TAP Master early 2008, last year I played TAP exclusively and I only got better time. Never turned that 1 into an S1.

Hopefully this will be the year though.

  20. It should be. 1 to S1 is about 100 levels' worth of good play, whether that's 450-550 or 490-575. S1 to S2 is about another 100 levels. If you're just surviving on singles and doubles at that point, S1 at level 600 is about right.
S2 to S4 can be done in one good combo with a mix of doubles and triples. It's S4 to S5 that's deceptively long, but you most certainly want to be S4 at level 750 to take advantage of the 4x multiplier. I know it's a long way to go, but I find it difficult to finish TAP with a grade lower than S4 or S5.

Here are my goals, seeing as I have not posted them yet.
    • Death 750 (did that today; let's make it Death 800)
    • TAP Master m (done, let's do it again)
    • TGM1 sub 10:30. Need less input lag, though. It's frustrating.
    • TGM1 20G sub 10:20.
    • Ti Master clone MK (I can make 3 grades in the disappearing roll now, so all I need is to string together a complete game)
    • Ti Shirase clone 1100
