Records: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

Thread in 'Competition' started by Rich Nagel, 18 Dec 2007.

  1. If anyone here is interested in this old classic gem, I'll maintain several high score tables for the various single-player gameplay modes of Spectrum Holobyte's "Tetris Classic" (DOS and Windows versions).

    Code:

Hi , this is a good idea. However how should record be sent? should I send you the record file? could you parse the values in it?

  3. Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

Simply post your score here using the above format, we're all on the honor system here -:)

  4. Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

Hey Rich, you probably didn't see me post this in the other thread, but this game completely breaks if you manage to get 100 lines. If you manage it, gravity becomes perma slow and you can max out the score. And it looks really glitchy to boot.

Sorry about the PNG as I know you're on 56k but I know you like the art in this game and would perhaps appreciate a pixel perfect image.

I'm playing it without DosBox and it runs perfect. I remember I tried it in different ways with dosbox and had always problems withit, best way is without dosbox.

  6. Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

I wasn't aware of that. As you prolly know, I'm not the greatest Tetris player (to say the least <LOL>), so's I've never got that far. I'm wondering if it has something to do with DOSBox (?).

Although it takes one of y'all modern players here at Tetris Concept to get that far in the game <G>, it's surprising that Spectrum Holobyte didn't find that bug.

BTW. what do you mean ny "glitchy" (crashes, etc...)? I play the game either in native DOS, or the Windows version under W98SE and have never seen any problems with the game ('course like I said, I don't think I've gotten that high in the game).

Hey, that image was only about 85kb or so, so no problemo, even on my measly dialup [IMG]

  7. Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

I believe it is an original game bug. The only thing that happens is that the game loads the "next" background, which happens to be the co-op background. When all the score boxes and stuff get displayed overtop it looks very odd. And it's surprisingly disorienting to play when there's black space to the left and right of the play area, which remains the proper 10 units wide. Aside from that, it's the only level up that actually slows the game down. After 100 lines the game slows to almost 0G. I played another 40 lines after that, and the game didn't get any faster or change background anymore.

Given the simplicity of the explanation for the bug, it makes me think it was an authentic game bug and not DOSbox's fault. At the recent Tetris tournament I was able to play it on real hardware, but only had time for one try and only got 92 lines. It was hard to play the game... Compared to the many many other versions of Tetris on display, this version was especially popular, presumeably because of the pretty graphics and sound.

  8. Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

    Thanks for the info -:)

I wonder if the bug only rears it's ugly head in the DOS version, and maybe it was fixed in the Windows version.

  9. Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

Hehe, I finally saw the bug that you were refering to in the DOS version. Note that my skills aren't honed enough to make it to (or past) 100 lines <G>, I used an old DOS cheating-memory editor to advance the lines and level <G>.

Yeah, that's a nasty bug, and was just as you described. I still wonder if the bug is in the Windows version though. I can't try that one using the same method, as the DOS memory editor DEFINATELY doesn't like being run with W98SE (or even W311 for that matther).

Anyhow, I'm guessing that Spectrum Holobyte never realized anyone would be able to advance so high in the game... then again, the was well before the Tetris Concept forums <LOL>!

Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

I've been playing the game yesterday and today. Here are my current highscores:

    Standard Mode

    Score 18213 - Level 9 - Lines 88 - Started playing from level 6 - 09-16-08

    Timed Mode: 2 Minute

    Score 8294 - Level 7 - Lines 27 - Started playing from level 7 - 09-16-08

    Timed Mode: 5 Minute

    Score 16475 - Level 8 - Lines 75 - Started playing from level 6 - 09-17-08

I played the DOS version and am not able to take screenshots with the Print Screen key. Do I need to start a standard mode game with height 13 for garbage mode?

There was no music (I haven't tried DOSBox), but the backgrounds were very nice.

The game plays too smooth on my computer. The DAS is very sensitive and there was no way to configure the buttons as far as I know which bothered me in the beginning. I tried getting over 100 lines to see the bug for myself and get a monster score, but I can't handle the level 10 speed with the sensitive DAS and immediate locking... (T_T)

Oh and by the way the randomiser is frustrating like ****. What randomizer does the game use anyway? It's no exception to get 5 or more of the same piece consecutively, get a long SZ combo that creates an impossible stack or not receive an I for a very very very long time. All this makes it quite difficult to get tetrises all the time, but it's this challenging part of the game that kept me playing. ^^

Still enjoyed the overall experience and I was wondering if it's still possible to play the first/original Tetris game?

Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

I'm pretty sure that almost everything prior to 1998 used Memoryless. There is a 1 out of 7^(4-1) = 343 chance that your next four pieces will be the same shape.

I don't know if the PDP-11 version (developed on a PDP-11 clone made by Elektronika) ever made it into the wild, but you can Google tetris 3.12 for Vadim Gerasimov's demo version for PC DOS that still works out of the box in XP. In fact, Tetris 3.12 still has the correct speed curves on today's hardware because it uses the PC's interval timer (which runs at the Atari 2600's clock speed of 13125000/11 Hz, always has, always will) instead of the CPU speed (which has increased nearly ten-thousandfold since the 808B).

Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

I see. I actually thought it might be the Memoryless randomizer, but I had no idea that almost all early Tetris games used this particular radomizer. In most cases when the same pieces appear consecutively it's the S, Z or O piece.

Thanks for the very useful information. I'll be looking for it immediately. ^^

  13. Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

I added your highscores to the list, Ai, good job [IMG]

    Yes, that's correct.

With DOSBox, the music and sound effects should work OK with Tetris Classic... give it a shot, the music is nice [IMG] Although, the music will be old-school FM synth (yuk), try these MIDI files instead -> http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/tcmusic.zip , as well as the highscore music in "OGG" format here -> http://www.tetrisconcept.com/wiki/index ... _Music.ogg [IMG]

Hehe, it ALWAYS kicks _my_ butt. I could prolly maintain a constant level 9 (with a LOT of concentration), but level 10 is WWAAAYYY to fast for me <LOL>!

As Tepples replied, try Vadim Gerasimov's Tetris v3.12 from here -> http://vadim.oversigma.com/Tetris.htm ( http://vadim.oversigma.com/Tetris3.zip ). Also if ya want, check this here -> viewtopic.php?t=797 [IMG]

  14. Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

I can confirm this bug was fixed in the Windows version. The level stops incrementing after level 10 even after playing 120+ lines.

However, the Windows version is not Y2K compliant! [IMG] Apparently My high scores are dated 09/18/108.

  15. Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

Excellent! Thanks for the testing and info, CT! [IMG]

Correct-a-mundo! Hehe, I use a hex editor to edit my "TCSCORES.DAT" file to change the year to the correct one <BG> [IMG]

(Edit) P.S. Chalk that up to one of the very *few* computer programs that *actually* suffered from the Y2K bug/scare <LOL>!

Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

Thanks for the links Rich Nagel. I'm looking forward to play the original Tetris. ^^

Level 9 is indeed doable, but level 10 is just over the top. Especially if the stack is a little too high. I'll be playing garbage mode tomorrow and I'll post my personal best during the day.

    EDIT:

    As promissed! ^^

    Garbage Mode:

    Score 9827 - Level 9 - Lines 80 - Started playing from level 3 - 09-20-08

Aimed for 10.000 but not as easy as it looks if you have to deal with a high stack on the higher levels.

  17. Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

Added to the highscores list, good job, Ai! [IMG]

It's quite difficult with the garbage pieces so high. I've always thought that if I could clear out more of the garbage pieces early on, I could get a much higher score... of course, that goes without saying <LOL>!

Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

It's indeed quite difficult to clear all the garbage. Most times I just get halfway and try to get as much tetrisses as possible before level 8 comes around.

I was hoping me posting here would encourage other people to play the game. I'm not really sure it's right for me to be at the top of any Tetris leaderboard. ^^

  19. Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

Same here, as this version of Tetris is quite dear to my heart. 'Twas the first version of any Tetris that I had ever played (I was never into the GameBoy sort of thing), and enjoyed it immensly throughout the decades. BTW, you've prolly seen the Wiki page that I created for the game some time ago -> http://www.tetrisconcept.com/wiki/index ... is_Classic [IMG]

Hehe, with my meager skills, it's definatley more just/right than *me* being up there <LOL>! [IMG]

Re: [CLASSIC] "Tetris Classic" High Scores

I've seen the wiki page before I started playing the game and I enjoyed reading about the story portrayed in the game. I played some more during the week but no new highscores. First need to get used to the level 9 and 10 speed. I'm still aiming for 100 lines. Definitely worth playing.

I see, but I still hope you'll challenge me. ;) And just maybe colour_thief will submit his scores. ^^

I would also like to thank you for your skins for Lockjaw!
