View Full Version : S9/Gm TGM players - Tell me how much I suck

I've been playing TGM on and off for the past 3 months now, and I'm struggling to improve. I can hit S4 fairly consistently, with the occasional S6 or better but I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle as soon as 20G kicks in and the garbage will gradually build up.
Here is a screenie of my best game to date:
[MODDED]
To those that have surpassed this, how long did it take you to clear TGM? How long afterwards to reach Gm? Was there a moment when you suddenly felt comfortable sustaining 20G play? Do I just need more practice practice practice or is there some deep secret? http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif
Any general advice would be welcomed. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
Also, does anyone know of any British Gm class players or would I be likely to be the first if I get there?

I'm a British player, but I've never played.
Does an emulator count?

Having trouble with 20G? After you put in money but before you start the game, enter the following code:
Down Down Down Down
Down Down Down Down
C B A
Then go grab Lockjaw and see how long you can survive in Rhythm mode.

I've never heard of a British Gm class player. French German and Swedish, but not British.
Anyhow your screenshot was very close to Gm! Eventually it's quite possible to play confortably in 20g, and it will come in time. From the looks of things you're well on your way. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
I'm not the best person to ask how long it should take, as I took many breaks at first. But If I had to guess, I'd say you'll hit Gm withint the next month or two.
General 20g tips:
Holes in the middle are incredibly difficult to fix, so try to keep holes on the sides as much as possible.
Ok, maybe that's only one tip, but it's the most important.

Zinc. You'll probably want a decent frontend to go with it too.
1°) train 20G mode with the code given by Teeple
2°) learn with consistency the rotation system here (http://www13.plala.or.jp/TETRiS_TGM/kouza/index.htm).
(no need of japanese skills ; watch closely on the animated gif... for all special move and rotations)
3°) watch several time this video (http://www.arikaonline.com/download/movie/tgm.mpg) and try to assimilate.
4°) Be MOTIVATED ! http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

TGM is so different to TDS. There was a time when I would say that Tetris is Tetris, but after an hour of playing I'm struggling to adapt well enough to get to an S rank. S2 is my highest. Generally I screw up at level 170-200 after about 2-3mins, because the roation is different, as is the nature of the infinite spin. Usually when the speed drops again I've messed up too much to recover.
I can't see myself getting good at TGM until I've had a lot more practice. But by nature it should be hard. It's an arcade game, and therefore is created to make you lose, and insert another coin. You're supposed to get stuck at the same bit time and again, putting more money in as you try to get a higher score. Otherwise it's not a good arcade machine for the owner.
EDIT: Got the USB joystick. It's not an arcade style one, it's a huge one, which I don't think helps. I was expecting it to be harder with a stick not buttons, but it isn't. It's just different.

If you want a controller with a non-shite feel, I recommend a PlayStation joypad through an adapter (http://www.stepmania.com/wiki/USB_Adapters). (You can ignore the "dance pad incompatibility" column because you won't need to press two different kinds of drop at once in Tetris.) I swear by my EMS USB2 adapter. N64 controllers should work too through an adapter, and I use a black N64 controller exclusively to test LJ.
If you have an Xbox 360 Core System, I've been told that you can just plug its wired controller into any USB slot, install drivers (http://xbcd360guide.50webs.com/default.htm), and play.

Yeah, I heard it's bad for Street Fighter too.
But I use my gamepad for alot of things.. Mame.. Colin McRae.. Tetris.. I just started playing PSO private server too.
360 D-PAD can't suck any harder than SideWinder's D-PAD http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

Not to mention - the dust that gets stuck inside makes it very un-responsive, thus, requires cleaning every now and then.
I feel the that 360 gamepad is the best now, ergonomicly, and that smooth white feel around it. Good stuff. Better than dual-shock.
Umm.. again, why does it suck? Personal opinion or he says she says?
the X360 D-Pad totally SUCK !
The X360 pad is not good at all for all game that need fast & precice mouvement input eg : fighting game & puzzle game (presently TGMA)
The ergonomy is not good for that kind of game because too much input merge error : for example you press right, but most of the time you can expect that up or down is also pressed.
this gamepad is certainly cool for other kind of game but stay away if it's just for tetris...
it's my opinion (i usually use arcade stick but i've played with better game pad) but also a large report from Japanese TGMA players...
even Mihara mentionned it (if i remember well)...
ps : i've bought DOA X360 arcade stick... witch is not a bad solution if you want to use and USB arcade stick on your PC.

Ok, I decided NOT to get an xbox360 controller. My local radio shack has a ps2-usb converter, so I'll just get that for $11. I found this site with possible drivers (http://www.jandaman.com/games.mvc?p=psxusb5&Category_code=PC)- Tepples, do you think that's what I'll need?
Needle
09-20-2006, 08:37 PM
All PS/USB converters are not created equal. Some shitty ones will only poll for input 20 times per second, totally unsatisfactory for frame-critical gameplay.
The best USB converter according to this site (http://www.3rd-sri.com/read.html) which did a comparison of various products is the Sanwa Supply JY-PSUAD1 (http://www.sanwa.co.jp/product/syohin.asp?code=JY-PSUAD1), which polls 54 times/sec. No other USB converter tested reached that rate of frequency.
However, this is still below 60 which is the frame rate most games work by. If you must surpass this, a DirectPad Pro (http://arcadecontrols.com/Mirrors/www.ziplabel.com/dpadpro/index.html) cable is needed, which is essentially a converter which connects to the parallel port instead of USB. According to the tests, it is capable of 44 times/sec under Windows 2000, and a whopping 176 times/sec under Windows 98.
One advantage of the DPP is that the wiring is simple and open, so if you have a soldering iron and a couple of parts, you can build one yourself without the hassle of importing from afar. (You can also buy premade DPP cables from people who make them.) While going back to Win9x to get the best response performance would be somewhat inconvenient, 44 times/sec on Win2000 is still not bad compared with other converters.
And yes, the X360 d-pad sucks. I play TGMA using the analog stick. It took getting used to, but works much better than the dreaded d-pad which produces mis-drops and unintended movements at an alarming rate.

Despite having mis-drops while using the 360 d-pad.. I don't think that's a problem with me.. That's if, you're performing stuff like zangi-moves, and simple sonic-drops with slides.
I'll give you guys my opinion as soon as I get the controller. (read below why I haven't gotten it yet)
Game shops here work very differently. Ridiculous mark-ups and uneducated store keepers.
First shop, but my friend wasn't there, I ask how much for the 360 cont. I see over there, he says, RM199(54USD).. Whoa, I asked, wired or wireless? He said, wireless.. "Got wired wan ah?".. "GOT"..
Skipped to another shop, "Sorry, out of stock/no more stock".. What that means is, "Sorry, we have never gotten it before", "Sorry, we have no idea what it is".. "Sorry, please go somewhere else".. This is very common.
Last shop, 3rd party 360 cont, wired, RM199(54USD), LOL(it's the same price as the original Microsoft controller). And the shop keeper was trying real hard to push it to me. Good luck, I made him feel shitty by telling I could get an original controller for way less.
I should have stucked with my friend in the first place, a wired 360 cont. RM124 = USD33.5.. 1 week time.. sigh
You guys got it good there with Gamestop/Target/ETc. and also support(MS, Ninty, Sony).. If my 360 screws up, to Singapore it goes.

Hello everybody!
I discover this forum, it's wonderfull!
I can improve my english in speaking about tgm..
I've found an arcade stick : it's the arcade stick of XBOX, from Gamester..

You can do it!
Whatever you do keep at it... One of my regrets is taking an extended break after reaching your level of skill, disheartened at my inability to make Gm. You're actually really close to making it almost every time (you survive to 999) without it being that big of a deal! http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

I've hardly played at all for the past 4 weeks so I know what you mean! I'm going to make a concerted effort to reach GM this week, so watch this space http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
try to keep a trace of it !
the infinite joy of the first Gm achievement, is something that you have to remind.
a video is the best, or if you the system you use can make replay...

Good idea, Jago! Just need to find a good (and free!) screen recording program I could use...

And I was happy to get to S4 http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif. I need to practise a lot more...

I can laugh now, but my heart was in my mouth for the whole 900-999 section (for perspective, I almost bravo'd on the last section change!). I knew I was on for a good time and just played horribly at the end - I didn't even survive the credits roll as you can see.
But it doesn't matter because I can now say I achieved GM, and as far as I can tell, I'm the first British player to do it, hooray!

Well done!
What will you do now? Time attack it, or move on to TAP? If you\'re shooting for a time attack, the best known times outside Japan are just over 10 minutes (jago) and just under 11 minutes (me).
Also, it\'s really disorienting to see you with that avatar... I made that mine back when I first attained Gm, and kept it for years. Keep it though, you\'ve earned it! I\'ve got a new avatar now anyways.

Badly written proxies (or proxies on badly configured PHP) add a backslash before every quote mark. It happens to one of the regulars on forum.gbadev.org too.

I'm moving on to TAP.
Playing lots of TA Death really helped me break the GM barrier in TGM, I forgot to mention before but my GM run above was literally my first game after an hour straight of TA Death and it felt easy right up until I got nervous at lvl 900 :p
TGM just feels sluggish now, which was part of why I've been so frustrated up til last night.

If I'm not the first British GM no big deal, just haven't heard of any others.

I haven't even heard of another British player, so the odds are pretty good.

There's 3 on this forum, but AFAIK, only one of them actually plays TGM...
