Is it like that in every forums ? Or is it due to the absence of "human code" request for subscribing ?
It seems to me that it is now 1 time / week now, very much more than 2 year ago. I wonder why.

It's been worse ever since we upgraded to the bleeding edge phpbb. And steadily worsening with every passing month. I've mentioned it to caffeine, but I guess he's too busy masterfully managing his time to do something useful with it.

I kid... But it would be really nice to get a real solution to this problem. I can't even delete spam posts at work these days because they're nsfw.

How about using a reCAPTCHA plugin/mod ?

I hear it got pretty good results.

Link?

From what I can tell, spammers just recently figured a way to break past phpbb3's bot prevention, and that's why we're getting this summer wave of pornospam. I'm deleting/banning everyday, so yeah, I'm motivated to fix this soon. I am one update behind, so I'll update to the latest version, and if that doesn't work, we'll try a mod.

Edit: According to this (http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=1437125), 3.0.5 does better the captcha, but it also says we need to make the board's defense somehow unique because spam will eventually break through the new changes. I'll run home for lunch today and update the board, and then at a later time I'll look into what we can do about making the board unique. Feel free to make any suggestions. That reCAPTCHA thing looks interesting. I hope phpbb3 supports it.

Edit2: I'm going ahead and activating admin activation for now.

PHPBB3 recaptcha (http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=1437345)

SMF ftw.

Or just more mods? Surely there are a good dozen or so people on this place who could be given moderator status to help clear the spam? Or is that too much of a security risk in other respects?

I don't really want more mods, but more active mods sounds great. Unless DIGITAL objects, you can have his job, Rosti. Jujube has also shown some interest in demotion. Just keep in mind that moderation here is extremely laissez faire and reserved almost only for spam.

I'd do it but I'm sure I'm unwanted.

Let's say the cutoff is at least two years a forum member here (so June of 2007 or before).

I'd take Digital's place. Aware that it's pretty much spam-only, and now that exams and University have finished I've not got much else to do other than be active here.

Can also take back the Sudden and Special Ti records thread while I'm posting about my new-found free time.

Could the forum be changed so that a user's first posts must be approved by a mod before being posted?

How about having questions like "How many tetrominos are there?", "What color is the L piece in official Tetris games?" or similar ones that wouldn't be very easy for a computer to answer? This might frustrate people who are entirely new to tetris, but if a link to the relevant wiki page was included with the question...

Also, I check the forums fairly often, and would be willing to volunteer for spam clean-up duty.

recaptcha is actually a good thing. it helps digitize books for impaired people. it's a win win.

I like the "ask a question" solution the best, but it has to be easy enough that no one will need to look up the answer anywhere. Some people are easily dismayed, and I wouldn't want to turn anyone away. So questions like "Who invented Tetris" are out (especially since there's multiple spellings).

Shouldn't it be possible for there to be multiple correct answers accepted? I remember once when I registered for something and the question was "What color is an orange?" I tried "yellow" and it didn't accept it.

In one hand, recaptcha is probably the best bot repellant... on another hand, I like the Tetris related question.

How about showing the answer right beside the question ? Something like
What is the color of the O piece ?

jujube

yeah, if there was a picture right next to the question it would be easy to answer. using PetitPrince's guide, a new member could look at a string of tetriminos and insert a string text answer.

I don't know, I'm colorblind.

How about something like "What column would you place this piece?" with an image with an extremely obvious answer. (We discussed this already, didn't we?)

The best CAPTCHA is one that doesn't already have a script written to answer it. I seem to remember an old topic (http://www.tetrisconcept.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1) where I prototyped a CAPTCHA similar to what carebearkid is talking about:
"This figure represents a playfield in a Tetris game. The columns are numbered 1 through 10. Into which column should you drop the I piece to clear a line?"
Want me to clean it up so you all can play with it?

Oh wait. Kotetsu is "carebearkid" now? That makes three of us:
caffeine represents Nicholas from The Care Bears Movie tepples represents Dark Heart from Care Bears Movie II: A New Beginning carebearkid represents Tenderheart Bear

since the bot is not supposed to answer any question, just ask a simple mathematical problem as 2+2.

Another solution to this problem : ban amnesia... http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif

1 more vote for reCAPTCHA. It's for a good cause, and anything that requires specialized knowledge is just elitist, no matter how trivial it is.

I'm gonna be crazy here, and suggest KittenAuth, using tetromino images as the possible images, and for a named tetromino, the user has to select the ones that match it. Slightly unfair to the trislexics, however...

Yeah, I installed reCAPTCHA yesterday, but it broke the registration page. I disabled registration until I can sort this out.

Ahhh, can you please just turn it back on somehow? I don't mind the porno bots, and I just advertised the Blockbox league all over the place to a load of people who now won't be able to actually register to participate.

I believe there's also a mod out there that allows you to use hotornot.com as a captcha. Of course, personal opinion could cause false negatives http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif

If jujube really did want to step down, I would love to take his place. Unfortunately I guess I haven't been a member long enough.
I have been lurking on this site since long before I joined, though. Could that count? http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif

my 5cent:

i recently had the same problem with my little phpbb3 installation at cubestorm.com. (demo: http://coreloop.com/forum/ucp.php?mode=register )

i installed the very easy to install --- guess what its called --- EasyCaptchaPHPBB http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

http://kestas.kuliukas.com/EasyCaptchaPHPBB/ (http://kestas.kuliukas.com/EasyCaptchaPHPBB/default.htm)

and it completely stopped any automated spammers. i can understand caffeines objections against any more mods, i hate them too, because it makes updating phpbb3 harder or sometimes impossible. but you can see easycaptchaphp just as a hot fix. if it comes to updating , just overwrite it with a new and more spam-proof phpbb version..
