Level 19-28 are much more relaxed here than on NES, -- not easy, but not as stressing -- but I see Level 29 is still a huge bitch.

I should not but here is the best strategy (easy to guess I think)
You have to think exactely opposited to TGM : during the 280-290 section, you have to empty the center of the stack and prepare very high wings, try to be as high as possible on the 1-2-9-10th row when you are at 289.
ofcourse I have not added your points on the points leaderboard because I guess you were not trying for a best score performance.
Kitaru
06-03-2010, 11:38 AM
Right, I use a similar stacking strategy on NES sometimes.
Also yeah I was more concerned with passing levels 19-28 than I was with getting tetrises during this time.

I hate them, they are just bullshit for me.
I can't describe what I think about their shitty concept of record guiness.
I attended to one of their contest on TGM1.
Ofcourse I gave the best score of the groupe with a GM around 11:00.
And the second best player after me was only S2.
they was able to watch the inp, I also proposed them to watch some other video I had on youtube about TGM2.
And they simply rejected my score because I was not using exactely the version of MAME they wanted me to use.
And at the end of the story they officially announced that the winner and the strongest known player was this poor S2 guy.
They suck, they are just amator guys. If they were a bit intelligent they would have noticed that there is a strong and huge community of TGM and would have admited that this contest had no sens.
But instead they prefered to ignore my presence and what I was trying to explain to them.
(edit : updated 1st post with a photo of the 550K)
How many games are reviewed on their website? Thousands? They simply CANNOT be aware of every detail of every game, nor every community of hardcore gamers. To keep things "official", they have set precise rules, and expect everyone to follow them; what's the matter with that? From their point of view their reaction is logical: some guy send a legit video, and another didn't while bragging all around and claiming he can do 5 times better: of course they choose the "legit" guy.
The "rules are rules" concept of records makes sense to me. (No need to explain me that many scores on TG are bogus, I already know it...)

reminds me the story about that girl that had beaten the nes tetris world record on twin galaxie.
I first thought "wow" then thought "why won't you give it a try ?" and after beating her record on my first attempt thought "okay, bulls*** site"

lets make a "hating on TG thread"
no.
To keep things "official", they have set precise rules, and expect everyone to follow them; what's the matter with that?
What about divvying the responsibility of officiality to that game's community?
i.e. for game x, ask community x to be the judge/set rules.

It would make sense to at least consult the community around a game before making strange decisions. Disabling score-based extra lives in a game where suiciding is a crucial scoring and difficulty control strategy? Playing for a score in a game played for time? *sigh*

so... I've never played SNES Tetris but I'm getting it as a Christmas gift in december... I've watched a few videosand looked at scoring charts; It seems like 390 is very much possible in this game in terms of lines and as such it also seems that a maxout would therefore be significantly easier than on NES... Am I incorrect in this? I know that the post level 29 play is hard than NES level 19, but i looks survivable, although a good number of great players do still die right then and there... do i stand a chance at 390 at all? does anyone?
Kitaru
10-14-2010, 05:13 PM
It _would_ be an easier max-out... but then the level multiplier in the score formula has to go and max out at 10! That's right, you don't get any extra points for higher levels after 9.
Level 29 is a lot more playable here, but it is still damn stiff! If you haven't already, check out DanZ's YouTube for his Tetris + Dr. Mario stuff. He has one video where he gets ~350 lines.

there isn't any cheating imho, why couldn't he do it with a pad
Amnesia
10-14-2010, 10:25 PM
It is really strange, Spectre is stronger than me there is no doubt, but why is he so slow before 290, he is probably playing on something else than a paddle. It seems that he can't use diagonal moves.
Kitaru
10-14-2010, 10:32 PM
He uses his fingertips like on a keyboard. I don't think he has very good access to down like that.
Also, he mostly hypertaps. He was surprised that Jonas was using DAS in NES, in fact.
BenMullen
10-15-2010, 03:54 PM
interesting... if danz can only get 350 my 390 ambitions will have to be checked at the door :( and the level ten stoppage on score increase explains the seeming lack of really high scores... I'm buying it soon still and look forward to seeing what i can do :). I figured there was something to explain it but wasnt sure what, still the 290 plus play looks decepitvley simple, though certainly not easy...

interesting... by my calculations the most points you could get prior to level 29 are 876,000. So even assuming you get to 390 you would need 124k in 98 lines (possible but if your just "getting lines" at a level 9 score pace that only gives like 75k or something... this gentelmen, would be one tough cookie to make out, but as harry and jonas and thor have taught us, never say never... but this all begs the question, is level 39 a kill screen? if not, this puppy might be doable!

I can do some Tool-Assisted work if someone hasn't already done a run, but I'm pretty sure the displayed level counter stops at 31 and things don't speed up.
EDIT: I was able to confirm the max level is in fact 31, with a max speed of 1G just like NES. If you use Game Genie cheats to pass the level cap, the gravity reverts to slower speeds.

I love this quote ha... while i have no real idea what an m9 player is im willing to imagine its quite impressive (though too lazy to look into it).
its been months since ive played tetris of any sort seriously and now I'm feeling the pinch in a big way, since last august 2 players have supassed me and now i have to use my second hand to guesstimate my "rank" as an NES player... time to recommit, so nevermind about needing more than 646k soon, youll have plenty of time, but beware:
A fellow you may recognize the name of (thor) didnt know this was a pure tetris game while i last spoke to him on fb, now he knows and he hypertapps brillantly, so brilliantly in fact that my thinking is that within 2 months of his playing this version, it will be maxed out... I can this the the UTP method of holding a tetris record (until thor plays)
even failing his presence in the game This is a tetris version i am quite smitten by and i fully intend to take it as far as i can in the coming years. So whomever hopes to be 2nd to thor will one day need an 800k game (technically doable but daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn hard) unless i can learn better how to survive longer on 29.
man tetris is fun :)

I have actually gotten 307 3 times (which is my best) and 308 once which i lost proof of (not that its even much better) i seem to go along fine then boom, dead... super frustrating.

DANG SO MUCH Proness
So I've been playing this on and off for several days now, and I'm starting to get real comfortable with levels 20-28. Currently, the only advanced DAS technique I'm using is shifting whilst blocked to get a free charge; it's been helpful enough so far, but if any of you pros can remind me of the other DAS tricks that make the game even more manageable, it would be much appreciated.
Anyways, level 29 is usually enough to kill me, but, sometimes...

I'm not a pro, but Kitaru and I had to implement the NES DAS weirdness into Nullpo to get it to act more like the actual game, so I think i'm somewhat qualified to talk here :P Remember that during ARE, the DAS charge is stored and is not bound to a direction, so you can go from side to side by releasing and pressing the other direction during ARE.

random fact for anyone who plays Tengen Tetris: I scored 7.71 million in it the other day... Its pretty good! Its just a marathon style game so its not good in the same sense as many of the acheivments here but what the hell, thought id put it in this thread in case anyone ever researches the Tengen World record given the currently nonexistantesque nature of twin galaxies... posting it here will prolly come up on a google search... Its really not possible to produce proof visually as the score keeps rolling (8 times in fact) nor should anyone subject themselves to a video that long, but what the hell thought id just say it ;)

I thought I should chime in on here, as I have been working on a few SNES Tetris goals.
Highest lines 308 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0TYtlJCoAA)
Highest points 610381 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flODBeOCoK4)
My intermediate goals are 650k points and 320 lines.
My ultimate goals are 700k points and 350 lines.
I originally thought much higher than 700,000 would be attainable, but now I am not so sure. I have had plenty of games in the 550k to 599k range, which lead me to think that one of those "special games" might get one well past 750k. But that randomizer is a strange beast. There is nothing like 11 z-pieces in a 15 piece span to de-rail zen, concentration, and points-pace :p

yeah they do seem to have a different randomizer dont they. Seems to work fine for a while then 10 z's haha

Man this game can be aggravating. Yesterday, I played a game in which I got 11 consecutive Tetrises first 44 lines, two other games that went to 550k or so, and a couple other throw away games. I was like, man this is fun, why don't I play the SNES more??
So tonight I fire it up, I played 3 lengthy games and a few throw away games. Every single game I played had seriously lopsided piece distribution, none of them favoring the Tetris piece, and even if one of them had favored it, lopsided piece distribution sucks! I say, anyway. One game, at one point I had 30 Tetris pieces, next lowest was 48, and most were in high 50's. I thought, ok, level 20 or so, they will switch it up and I will steel some easy Tetris. Nope. It did start balancing out, when I was royally screwed up, it just rained Tetris pieces. Grrr.
