I've been able to pull off the '>' challenge on Tetris DS, but I'm having considerable trouble accomplishing this feat with ARS. Most of the trouble comes with trying to manage the last two rows. Currently I can achieve grades S5 and greater fairly consistently. I've achieved S8 three times (although I've accidentally recorded over one of my S8 .inp), but I can't seem to figure out how to get the last two holes without placing them within an area where they are likely to be overlapped by the next piece. In each case, I've able to plan alternate placements for the last 2 pieces as well as a possible placement for the next one, but the possible piece deals I can come up with as solutions are limited.

Has anyone accomplished the stacking challenge in its entirety with ARS or any other Sega-based rotation system? Is there any way one should plan for the last two rows or is it mostly luck without the aid of a hold piece feature? Does anyone else have .inp of their best games? Who holds the best grade and time?

EDIT: Added a leaderboard. Submit any records you may have.

feel free to change the topic of this thread to "Records: Secret Grade" and begin maintaining a leaderboard. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

That picture is old, I haven't tried in ages. TGM3 gets an advantage, but TAP and TGM1 are equally difficult so I suggest keeping the leaderboard open to both of these.

Though I'll give it a shot with TAP soon, and be really disapointed if I don't improve. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Ahh, TGM does recognition as well? I tried once but didn't trigger it. I'll change the topic to reflect this.

I used to rely on the 200 slow down to get from the S3 zone up into S5 and above, but my best games have been in the sub-100 zone. One time I had an S8 game going and got into the 200s and then ruined everything and got an S5. I just couldn't seem to get the right pieces and placements to complete the challenge. :<

wow !

kitaru : S8 in 93 lvl is quite impressive.

my best is S7 if i remember well in TAP.

The same for me as well..I already did S8 but the game lagged a lot..

It is astonishing kitaru you are able to perform such a score with your current score on TGM and TAP..

Don't worry I am not thinking you are a cheater..But with such an ability to create the > stack, you should get at least the GM rank in TGM1..

And you can accomplish it before the slow sequence at 200..I use to wait the level 200 to finish the 4 last holes of my stair.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

Some time I want to try to organize and categorize strategies for Secret Grade, but there are a lot of different ways of thinking about the task at hand.

K
10-08-2007, 11:11 AM
imo, the time is unreliable : it don't indicate the time where you got the grade, but just the game over time.

shouldn't we just care about Grade and level ?

The time rewards players who don't stall.

It is really amazing to see some people not really strong on the usual modes who are able to do this astonishing performance.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

Congratz kitaru and poochy for the sub-100 !!!

First S1, woo!

level already does that.

You can still stall by not locking.

colour_thief
10-08-2007, 10:37 PM
I think it is best to continue competing for time. If you really care about passing everyone else, get a fast S8 and then suicide. Then, next time you can play properly and struggle to survive to S9 and Gm.

Really, once people are good enough to hit Gm it would feel silly to compete for anything other than time.

Does TGM evaluate the stack for a Secret Grade continuously, or just at Game Over?

K
12-10-2007, 07:07 PM
only displayed at gameover

tepples
12-10-2007, 08:02 PM
I know when it's displayed, but it could be evaluated sooner and stored for later display. Specifically, if I make enough of the pattern to earn secret grade S5, and then I drill through it, does the S5 grade stick, or is my grade reduced by how much I drilled down?

colour_thief
12-10-2007, 08:48 PM
It really is at game over. You'd lose grades in the situation you describe.

Rosti LFC
12-11-2007, 12:02 AM
When you hit the right wall, do you instantly start going back, or do you have a space of two?

colour_thief
12-11-2007, 12:44 AM
You go back right away, so that the pattern is 19 rows of holes.

Hmm... could we maybe have another ranking for Secret Grades in T.A. Death mode?

Don't ask me what I was thinking when I came up with the idea, but I managed a secret grade 5 in T.A. Death...

http://webpages.charter.net/poochyexe/TAP/DeathModeSecret.png

Kitaru
01-14-2008, 10:07 AM
Most of the time I get grade 5. I think colour_thief has hit S1. I can put up a leaderboard if there is any interest. The question here, however, is how it should be restricted. Death only? 20G code? At the moment, the ranking is for TGM1 and TAP Master Secret. In the new ranking, are we excluding TGM1 and making it Death-only? Are we making it open to any 20G mode? Should there be separate 20G and Death?

colour_thief
01-14-2008, 10:57 AM
Yep, S1 is my death record though I did not try very much.

I'd support 20G/Death or whatever. On the one hand it makes sense to contrast the second table with the first by making it as hardcore as possible (Death only), but on the other hand since time is important 20G mode players will be at a distinct disadvantage. I don't really care either way.

Kitaru
01-14-2008, 02:05 PM
Well, I've been able to manage 20G S1 on my GBA clone. I might be able to pull it of in 20G mode, but probably not Death. For now, it'll be mixed.

It is getting rather late -- to the point where I can now can it early -- so I'll organize the 20G/Death Secret chart tomorrow. (EDIT: Today, rather.)

EDIT2: I added the chart and added as much information as I had.

I've somehow managed an S5 in Death mode:

Also, my entry on the regular leaderboard is wrong, it should be level 84 @ 1:17.56. The currently displayed level and time are from my old S7 run, I think.

Kitaru, you know I gotta get in on this action :D. If someone can give me a heads up on a good emulator or other game that qualifies for this, other than TetrisFriends, let me know. In the meantime, here are a few secret grades I've done:

Tetris Secret Grade - Max Speed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iux_ZYhaxBE)

Tetris Secret Grade - No Holds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZTKFct2oMA)

Tetris Secret Grade - Ultra Perfect Build (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHPxvo2ovpg)

Tetris Secret Grade - Ultra Perfect Build

Very impressive ! I really don't imagine that someone can build it faster than this. You even made the last hole which changes direction.

Kitaru
11-23-2010, 02:54 PM
@Shuey: For this leaderboard, we're using TGM1 and TGM2+. Both of these games can be played with MAME. If you're having trouble getting TGM1 to run full speed, you can try running that one in ZiNc. TGM1 requires the "tgmj" romset and "cpzn2" BIOS. TGM2+ requires the "tgm2" and "tgm2p" romsets.

@Amnesia: I did one the other day in 52 seconds, but I still haven't quite figured out how I'm going to get the hole going back the other way like Shuey has. The pieces may spawn one row higher in Tetris Friends, but things are still pretty tight at the top, haha.

Shuey

I still haven't quite figured out how I'm going to get the hole going back the other way like Shuey has

Ofcourse ofcourse..You are still the western boss of the secret grade kitaru for me, I hope you don't imagine that I am silly enough to compare directely a secret grade performance on TAP, and on a SRS game with hold and 5 previews ??

But we have to admit it, Shuey is a very strong secret grade player, way better than me already.

Thanks again Amnesia. I think my "no holds" one definitely shows my potential and strength. As soon as I have some more time, I'll try to get a good emu and rom set so I can start working on TGM. Maybe Kitaru can help me find the stuff to get started :).
