So what improves the grade points in this game? Given all the combo whoring I saw in the first couple sections (tip: leave columns 9 and 10 as open as you possibly can), I'm guessing it's combos, or clears near the bottom?

I think it's almost certainly clears near the bottom.

Damn. You think it might be for TAP as well? I'm still in the TGM mode of keeping the stack high...

really makes you wonder...
and did he pass up the bravo at 3:42 youtube time to avoid getting a medal? surely he saw that. i guess medals are only for show, not for rank.

So what improves the grade points in this game?Well, I'm pretty sure combos help and make a non-trivial difference, but that kind of stacking doesn't seem to help as much in TAP. Either TI rewards combos more, or his sudden drops in block volume make the game think he's trying to recover and doing a good job of it, and thus boosts his grade.
(I've never played TI, though, so this is pure conjecture.)

Looking at the video, you realise how HARD it is to complete the game without getting a single medal.
Maybe that's some kinda secret rank: master mode clear with no medal = rank master ?
BTW, what is this "promotionnal exam" ?

I think it is the stacking. It isn't the time, nor the combos. Ti is the first TGM game to read the stack to keep statistics and also to be able to know where to put the next piece even though there is no CPU player that I know of.
This game was a surprise to me. Being able to hit the completely invisible roll without the required COOL!!s (note that no one really knows what the requirements are).
And seeing he is qualified as Master 7.... It is just wierd how bad... but good he really is.

That is 14 playing the MasterO exam. A request by me a few weeks ago. Someone put it up on youtube... hopefully with permission. I didn't.
The exam is a random qualification that you sometime must do to keep your grade shown in the top right corner. 14 is now a MasterM qualified player. I think only jin8 and 14 are MasterM qualified. But jin8 has been GM qualified for one day, and then demoted back to MasterM. Imagine having to qualify to prove you are a good TGM player.

not exaclty random :
as you see the game keep your playing statistic, and measure your average skill. Get often a rank and the game will propose you an examination for it.
Definitly far more difficult to be "qualified" than just "interim" top rank.
and there is more qualified MasterM class player than just the name lost quoted.

To ask a stupid question, has anyone put together a list of the ranks and tried figuring out what gives each? I mean, I'm sure as hell not seeing the differences just yet...as an example, one that I find almost as odd as the MasterM in 7:15.03 is the MasterV in 4:59.01. Then we have the MasterK's which look basically like MasterM gameplay...
