In what appears to be something like collective consciousness, the Heboris developers have implemented netplay into Hebo Mini!

I've set up a (temporary) server and I've played caffeine, edo and Caithness. Orgasmic is our only word for it.

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to the Heboris Uploader (http://hebo.game-host.org/default.htm) and fetch Hebo Mini V19, and V20b (patch). Extract these over an existing copy of YGS2K Heboris.

Setting up netplay in Hebo Mini:

Launch heboplugin.exe, and click Add. Now add all the plugins listed in plugin_net, and close heboplugin.

Setting up a server:

in other\heboserver there's source code and a Windows binary for the Hebo Mini netplay server. It takes one argument which is the port it will be listening on. So for example:

C:\Hebo Mini\other\heboserver\> heboserver.exe 5001

Will launch the Hebo Mini netplay server, listening on port 5001.

For someone to be able to connect to you on your server, it's likely that you're going to have to forward the TCP port in question (http://portforward.com/routers.htm).

Connecting to a server:

Open up heboris.ini, and find this line:

//?????? (Netplay?
Pick any of the values and change "localhost" into the IP address or hostname/dyndns of the server you are connecting to, and change the number to the port number. So if good ol' Alexey was hosting a game on port 2541, an entry would look something like this:
networkServerName[0] = "pajitnov.ath.cx";      // ???? (Host)
networkServerPort[0] = 2541;            // ????? (Port)
Now launch Heboris.exe, and start a game like you're used to, but select one of these three plugins:

NET_LINES -- Race eachother to 40 lines

NET_STANDARD -- Normal Tetris with garbage, no items

NET_ULTRA -- Race eachother to the highest amount of lines cleared or score (configurable), this mode seems bugged

Choose Host or Guest, hosts can only play guests and guests can only play hosts.

A server can host multiple games, in pairs of Host/Guest, and obviously with matching plugins.

I'll be hosting all day until I go to bed:

infernoz.speedxs.nl:24511

And DeHackEd seems to have a server up as well:

dehacked.2y.net:5000

I'm located in Europe, DeHackEd's in Canada, so for people on the west side of the Atlantic ocean, you'll want to connect to DeHackEd, and folks on the east side of the Atlantic will want to connect to me.

I've written a new net_standard.c

It is identical to the existing one, but with one important difference.

It provides for forcing ARE on if the guest player has configured his rotation system to skip it.

By default it's at "player choice", but you can force ARE OFF, ON, or ON(WITH SKIP)

get it here

REMOVED, folded into the main plugins.

If any Hebo Mini developers are reading this, I have two bug/annoyance reports:

Consecutive games have the same piece sequence There is no way to know who you are playing against! A name or arcade sign (ARK, KIL, MUF, etc) would be good for identifying opponents

Other than that, this is great! http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif We are all loving it. ?????!

It is easy. You extract zip files. The first one is named hebo160a.zip. When you have an extracted folder, it is time to extract hebo0021.zip (HEBORIS U.E. MINI V19) into that folder replacing some files. Then you extract hebo0024.zip (HEBORIS U.E. MINI V20 BETA3 (Patch)) into the same folder as above, replacing some files.

Now run heboplugin.exe, add the following plugins and press OK:

plugin_net\net_line.c

plugin_net\net_standard.c

plugin_net\net_ultra.c

When you load Heboris for the first time, you have to setup the buttons. Then you can setup the rest, such as windowed mode, or fullscreen.

Finally choose the game "net_standard" and..... annoyingly you have to wait for someone to join your game.

totally different--it's going to take me a long time to get used to playing like this, but it is a whole lot more enjoyable for me than TDS so that shouldn't be a problem.

i think this whole tier thing people seem to have going in their heads around here is going to have to be refined. most people on this board are "freaking good" at tetris, and regardless of who has the fastest 40 line, the fastest master mode complete, the best shirase endurance, there's a huge move to an even-er playing field with something like this.

worth keeping in mind: mandating a relatively high ARE can get someone at 3 pieces per second playing near fairly against someone comfortable at 2 pieces per second, with no actual "handicap" in play.

now what we really need is some stat tracking that shows how many games against a given player were loss/win, and then in a couple months you guys can start making lists of top players again.

Zaphod77
04-11-2008, 11:34 PM
right. a high ARE and/or a high line clear delay is an equalizer that gives the slower people tiem to think without being steamrolled by a fast player.

Ideally low speed games should be played without ARE, while high speed play definitely NEED it. (20G without ArE is pretty hard)

What is the big difference between multiplayer and garbage attack?

If garbage was sent during play, then there really isn't any big difference (other than the irregular and non-constant garbage sent by a human). The assumption though was that most players play more standard singleplayer modes.

It often costs significantly more money to play multiplayer over the Internet, such as cell phone minutes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enhanced_Data_Rates_for_GSM_Evolution), Wi-Fi hotspot access fees, or subscriptions to a matchmaking service (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_Live#Pricing_and_subscriptions).

A back-to-back tetris or T-spin double in Tetris DS sends five lines of garbage. This number as a 32-bit integer is 0x00000005; if you reverse the order of bytes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endianness), you get 0x05000000 = 83,886,080. Are all parties using the same kind of computer (for example, not PowerPC vs. x86)? Or might changes to the protocol have changed the position of some bytes in the data stream?

The server suffers from a case of assuming that a recv() call always returns a full size packet. Funky TCP happenings (easy with a bit of packet loss) can result in server crashes or screwing up data. Maybe this is what happened?

As for CPU types, the game is distributed as an x86 windows EXE. Even if you ran it on wine + qemu for x86 support, it simulates the right byte order by necessity. So.... uhhh...

If you want to host your own server, here's my linux version.

Source code (http://dehacked.2y.net/heboserver-linux.zip), requires linux 2.6 or linux 2.4 with the epoll patch.

Changes:

Linux code. Uses epoll for socket monitoring. Lots of windows code was commented out or deleted. Receive buffering. Should prevent crashes next time network lag results in recv() acting up.

To compile, just run "gcc heboserver.c -o heboserver". Needs no special libraries that don't come with a modern linux C compiler.

The usual sprinkling of sarcastic commentary is found for those of you who choose to read the C file. You'll easily be able to spot which comments are mine.

colour_thief
04-14-2008, 04:26 AM
// With the old code, if you half read a packet (which is what recv does if it has less data
// in the receive buffer than you asked for) then bad stuff happens. Maybe Windows will
// wait for a full size read, but linux won't.
//
// So if by net congestion or bad luck you get a half-read packet, half the data will be
// read and now the message sequence is thrown off. When reading the size of the next
// message, you get some data from the middle of the previous message. And explode.
//
// To work around this, the new socket code does in-program buffers which can be restarted
// should a packet turn out to be a short read. Basically if we don't receive a full
// packet as per the read size requested, we call it an error and try again later.

Cool. Lets hope this fix makes it into the base version.

We began with awfull setting of ARE, LC, LD and DAS..

1 : Bou VS zaphod : no problem as my expectation..

2 : Bou VS hektor : no problem as well, but I suspect hektor to be a noob in parameter setting..

3 : Bou VS caffeine.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif ..A disaster, but the second session has been more balanced once our setting began to be good, Bou killed caffeine one time after 1 attempts, and was close to destroy him a second time when the connection has been cut.. Result 10-1 or something like that..

4 : Me VS caffeine..No comment, I stay quiet for the next battle because my setting were very slow..(ARE and LC = 1 hour)

So I have not been able to win one match..

I set up a Heboris Net Play server that should work, on my dedicated web server. The thought is that it should be online all the time, but if it do gets offline, something's wrong with my web server and I will try getting it online again as fast as I can. :>
