TETRIS PARTY DELUXE - DETAILS

Either we're extremely slow on this one, or no-one even noticed the factsheet flying around at Majesco's. Either way, here are the full facts on Tetris Party Deluxe for both Wii and Nintendo DS.

Tetris is one of the most addictive and popular electronic games of all time with hundreds of millions of players. After its humble beginnings in Russia, this timeless puzzle game became a worldwide phenomenon enjoyed by all. Because of its unique yet simple randomness, it is always a fresh experience and never the same game twice. New Tetris variants introduce exciting and enjoyable new ways to play. As easy to learn as it is addictive, it will keep both the casual and seasoned pro entertained for hours.

You know Tetris, but do you know how to party? Tetris Party Deluxe builds on the previously released Tetris Party for WiiWare by adding new modes and features to enrich the overall gameplay experience for both Wii and Nintendo DS. With more than 20 exciting modes, online battles, and multiplayer fun for groups of friends and family, Tetris Party Deluxe is a must-have for Tetris and puzzle fans.

Features:
Six (6) new game modes:
Bombliss - Clear lines using bombs for explosive line-clearing chain reactions
Sprint - Clear 40 lines in the shortest amount of time
VS Sprint - Compete against 4 other players (locally). The first player to clear 40 lines wins
Master - Set to maximum difficulty/speed for extreme Tetris players
Co-op VS Co-op - You and another person play cooperatively against a second team in an extra-wide Matrix
All Clear Sprint - Clear 20 Perfect Clears in the shortest amount of time
Four (4) new enhanced modes of play:
Field Climber now includes an "Everest" option for added challenge with endless play. Help the climber reach the goal by placing Tetriminos accordingly. Collect all flags along the way and don't let your climber get crushed!
Shadow now includes an "Edit Mode" to give players the ability to create their own puzzles. Complete the puzzle by matching the Tetrimino against the shadow. Custom puzzle designs can also be used in VS Shadow and Bombliss
Stage Racer now includes an "Abyss Mode" that extends the length of race course for an ultimate endurance test. Race Tetriminos through a course to pass as many lines as possible
Duel Spaces now includes improved rules for a more intense multiplayer experience. Two players take turns dropping Tetriminos in a wide Matrix to enclose as much space as possible before their rival does
Battle it out with friends during multiplayer mode by using 13 exciting items to prevail against your competition: use Smoke to cover your opponent's matrix, Time Stop to temporarily freeze your rival's game! Three new items, including Super Bomb and Confuse help keep the action fast and competitive
Track your progress with in-game statistics that award more than 130 achievements.

Features specific to Wii:
Play it your way - Take advantage of the unique point-and-shoot capabilities of the Wii Remote, or enjoy the nostalgic feel of the Classic Controller (sold separately)
Break a sweat - Use the Wii Balance Board (sold separately) in specially-marked modes. Lean left and right to move the Tetriminos left or right; lean forward or backwards to increase the drop speed; squat to rotate them!
Let yourself be heard - With Wii Speak (sold separately), you can chat with up to 3 other friends within the Wi-Fi Battle lobby
It takes two to party - Enjoy Tetris with up to 3 other players in local play or up to 5 other players via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection
Look, it's Mii - Play with your own Mii to personalize the overall gaming experience

Features specific to Nintendo DS:
Magic at your fingertips - Utilize the intuitive touch screen to activate Magic Items during multiplayer games
Free speech is good - Simply speak into the Nintendo DS microphone within the Wi-Fi Battle lobby to speak with other users
Sharing is fun - Share a local multiplayer game with up to 8 other players using one Game Card
Take on the world - Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection multiplayer enables World Battle with up to 6 players

EDIT: The hell? It ate the rest of my post. Well, my tl;dr's were pretty concise and to the point, so maybe that is for the better, haha. I guess the only important detail from my original post before things blew up was that I heard about this on Hard Drop, but I don't think anyone posted the cache from before the details were removed. I'll probably link it there later. Also, I thought Shadow was kind of cool, but I'm pretty much done with that. The best part about Tetris Party was that I was able to turn a profit on it with the tournaments.

tl;dr: At least given what we know right now, it pretty much just sounds like another one of those "just Tetris" games that they push out from time to time. I really would hope it would be quite faster than the original, but I'm thinking that's pretty unlikely. It doesn't look like it'll offer me anything that'd warrant a purchase, but at the very least I'm glad it gives a nod to 20G with Master.

tl;dr of my tl;dr: I probably won't be buying it, but at least it looks to cover a slightly wider scope.

i think they work hard on it. and ttc could push out much more tetris games imo. tetris is kinda dead. (yes i said that!!) only game that kept it alive was tetris ds for a few years. my hope is that dsi tetris will push it again. but i doubt it.

The game was announced (http://ir.majescoentertainment.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=404209) a while ago. Will be released spring next year. Haven't seen the details above before though.

Some of the features look interesting. I will probably buy the game if it's not too expensive just to add to my collection. ^^ And Tetris is hardly dead seeing its popularity online and on portable devices.

Weird, a PSP Tetris only came out a few months ago, but I guess that was just a PSP mini title, so maybe they think it's okay to release a beefier version too.

So, the DS version is DSi only, correct? :/Almost certainly not. I don't think there have yet been any DSi-exclusive cart-based games. However, it's possible that there could be some frivolous DSi-exclusive features.

Nope, it'll be a retail release.

...which really brings the value into question. It doesn't sound like they're adding that much new content over the WiiWare release. Of course, if this means they'll hold more tournaments, it might still be worth buying...

Oh, I was under the impression that it was going to be DSiWare.

It was originally going to be DSiWare if I remember correctly. I guess it became large enough that they figured they could turn it into a retail release. This is especially because people want a new DS Tetris game after Tetris DS went out of print, and releasing it only on DSiWare would limit sales to DSi (XL) owners...

Kitaru
02-27-2010, 12:24 AM
There will be a "lite version" release on DSi, however. Tetris Party Live or something.

Caithness
02-27-2010, 03:21 AM
Hmm, that will round out the releases to every Nintendo platform: WiiWare, Wii, DS, and DSiWare. Are they all going to be inter-operable in terms of online play? That has the potential of limiting online play to whatever's in the WiiWare release, though.

I assume Caithness was simply wondering whether the new games had backwards-compatible versus, for the maximum opponent pool size. Personally I'd love to see cross-platform versus.

paul
02-28-2010, 04:27 AM
wii tetris party wifi will be compatible with wii tetris party deluxe wifi. no cross platform online play.
dsi ware tetris party live will come before june i think. tetris party deluxe will come to ds and wii in june.

I'll get it, unfortunately the button config in TP doesn't transfer to my joystick well so I don't know how much I'll actually play it. I doubt there will be customizable buttons, but that would make my day.

what's the verdict on the DS version? should i buy it?

paul
05-28-2010, 02:17 PM
it delivers.

single player modes:

marathon
cpu battle
field climber
shadow
stage racer
sprint
master mode
bombliss mode

online:

world battle with items up to 4 player
world battle without items 2 player
duel spaces (2 player, looks like 20x20 grid...didn't get a match yet)

it has a lot of variations, online ranking for everything.

Burbruee
05-28-2010, 02:58 PM
It also has leaderboards for the online stuff, which you can browse and see your own placement. And you can see a graph over your playing style. And it has achievements too, stuff like performed 100 back-to-back or 100 z-spin triples.

Oh, and you can play training while you wait for players to join battle mode. And you don't need to wait for all four slots to be filled either as everyone can just press start to accept and begin the match with the current players.

I think it's better than Tetris DS, I didn't like the feel of it at first but now I like it. At least there's none of that mario crap. :)

Caithness

Are there online leaderboards for the single-player modes, like in NDS_TGM? That would be pretty awesome if they incorporated an improvement from a homebrew game.

Actually there is. :)
Too bad they will all be ruined by cheaters eventually..

Billmaan

Be warned that if the online vs. rankings work the same as they do in Tetris Party -- which is quite likely -- they're mostly meaningless. First off, rating earned or lost doesn't depend on your opponent's rating. Whether they're rated 9000 or 1000, you'll get just as many points for beating them (or lose just as many for losing to them). Secondly, by the 8000s or so you'll have to win well over 90% of your games to gain any rating. "Fortunately", there's an easy way to deal with this: disconnect whenever you think you might lose. Disconnection doesn't result either in a loss for you or a win for your opponent. Intentional disconnection was extremely prevalent in Tetris Party.

Caithness
05-28-2010, 09:34 PM
The online vs. actually is more enjoyable than Tetris DS. You can have two or three or four players, with or without items. Some of the items seem a bit more difficult to deal with, but that could just be because I haven't gotten used to them yet. The fact that there's an in-game leaderboard is another big plus, although I couldn't find one for the single-player modes.

Billmaan
05-28-2010, 09:39 PM
The fact that there's an in-game leaderboard is another big plus, although I couldn't find one for the single-player modes.Records -> World Ranking -> Local Play Ranking -> Global Ranking -> select mode

The fact that they're hidden behind a menu called "Local Play Ranking" is a bit confusing.

Caithness
05-29-2010, 02:29 AM
Yeah, that is confusing. Thanks.

It looks like I was wrong about the no-items vs. though. It's only two-player, not two-to-four.

Separate ratings for each mode is pretty nice.

Billmaan
05-31-2010, 12:46 AM
More people need to try Shadow mode (and, to a lesser extent, Bombliss). The leaderboards are dead. The Bombliss leaderboard doesn't even have a full 30 people on it; I noticed that KevinDDR was tied for 25th with a total score of 0.

Shadow is really a great mode! It's worth your attention.

KevinDDR
05-31-2010, 12:59 AM
Yeah, I am really worried by the inactivity on these leaderboards. Is no one buying the game?

And don't worry...I'm working on my Bombliss score... >:D

Kevin? Worried about the performance of a TOA rehash? *rubs eyes* :p

No but seriously, how is this game? There are only a few new features that caught my eye, and I was skeptical about how they were going to turn out. Is Master interesting at all?

05-31-2010, 05:49 AM
I quite enjoy this so far on the DS, it's solid and I prefer the graphics theme being a bit more neutral than Tetris DS. Kitaru, Master mode is just "Marathon Mode starting with 20G" to 150 lines or endless. The lock delays seem to decrease with time although you can mitigate that with the move reset. I suspect from my first games that infinity is replaced by a forced piece lock if you take a couple of seconds to lock down even if you keep spinning or moving the piece.

I've been enjoying Shadow mode a lot, it's very playable and probably my favourite tetris puzzle variant. Sounds like I need to set a record quick!

This game isn't even available yet where I am, but I'm planning to get it Tuesday.

I've seen a couple youtube videos, and the DS version looks really fast and awesome, but it looks like they might have crippled the speed in the Wii version to make it compatible with the WiiWare version for online. People might want to hold off on buying the Wii version if that's the case.

I've been worried about it too, the number of topics on the GameFAQs board was 3 before the weekend. It's a bit more now, but still not a lot.

Also, I often run into the same opponents online and at times it appears as if no one else is online but me. But then again, some places has this up for a June 1st release.

I'm starting to get into Tetris again, probably because of this game's release. What is the rating system like for versus? I hope it isn't the terrible implementation of the WiiWare version again...

Been playing a few online though, and I really am enjoying this so far.

TPD is technically good.
the lack of advertising is where it fell down.

This game is technically better than TDS in every way. Faster das, faster gameplay, faster softdrop, all-spin recognition.

paul
06-22-2010, 01:18 AM
no. tds is leaps and bounds better. better items. funner game modes. designed much better. chess like wifi rating. wifi in general is a lot better and that's all i want.
idk if i really want the combo system in tetris either...it messes with the core gameplay too much.

European release: 3rd of September.

Idk yet whether I'll buy it. I do think it's a fun game, but the crappy wi-fi score messes my enthusiasm. And the fact that I'm a poor student makes me think about it little more. :$

I wonder if the player base of Tetris DS will go down appreciable when this is released in Japan.
