TGM rules :
1 : Reach lv. 300 with the 1 rank under 4:15.
2 : Reach lv. 500 with the S4 rank under 7:30.
3 : Reach lv. 999 with the S9 rank under 13:30 and 126000 pts.
ADVICE :
For the 0 - 300 , try to play as high as you can, around 2/3 ot the stack, in order to save few second from the lack of hard dropping.
At the end, around 950 try to finish on the bottom of the matrix, it is more beneficial to finish very low with single and double than trying to continue Tetrises after S9.
This is the optimal and maximal time I recommend for the whole game :
0 - 100 ---> 85 sec ---> 1:25
100 - 200 ---> 85 sec ---> 2:50
200 - 300 ---> 85 sec ---> 4:15 (!)
300 - 400 ---> 85 sec ---> 5:40
400 - 500 ---> 80 sec ---> 7:00
500 - 600 ---> 78 sec ---> 8:18
600 - 700 ---> 78 sec ---> 9:36
700 - 800 ---> 78 sec ---> 10:54
800 - 900 ---> 78 sec ---> 12:12
900 - 999 ---> 78 sec ---> 13:30 (!)

I could post a pic, but I can't be bothered.
That's an old record. Well, sort of.
My newest:
S7
Level 920
90427 points
12:46:86
Didn't get the mastering time, because I forgot to take a screenshot until after it said "Game Over" It was probably around 10:30 . I wasted a lot of time at S6 and S7 just clearing singles.
just played a bit, thats my current best (S1, 7:10min):

Hi,
Please change my record, because it is not official (jagoris)
a more correct should be Gm in 10:24:~~
GM 13:15:40. Haven't been able to get a good seed to produce a better record. And keyboard is starting to produce errors. I have pretty much given up a better result in TGM1.
Here is the proof, I now officially hate the randomizer in TGM1. It never gives the pieces you need, except in a game out of a million, it gives you only the piece you want (but way wrong):

now i got my hands on a arcade stick. its feels way better than a keyboard while playing. now its time to start training. what do you guys think is the best start for a beginner? tgm1, heboris 20 mode, or even tap death right away? 20g feels most comfortable for me, even if i cant handle it quite long. it makes way more fun than normal speed.
Amnesia
05-30-2007, 08:55 PM
I will try the most complete answer I can :
Both the 2 modes are very important, I won't speak about heboris because it seems not essential for me..
the 20G mode have a special dynamic totally different from the normal sub 20G game..You must not forget that.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_exclaim.gifhttp://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif
If you only choose the way of DEATH mode (aias for example), you are condemned to block at a several skill level..
If you only do master mode, you'll never do good time under 10min00
(mfm for example)
You must balance your training with Master mode and death mode..Even if DEATH mode is more exciting..
Master mode will make you improve your skill and develop your ability for making more tetrises, that will help you to find best way in death mode to save your life..
Death mode will increase your speed ability and will allow you to feel more comfortable for high speed in Master mode (700+)
The 2 modes are complementary! http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif
About me, I feel some period where I'm motivated for death, and other period where I prefer master..

okay i understand. should i play master on tgm2+ or tgm1? i think i read somewhere that its kinda different.
kotetsu213
05-30-2007, 09:28 PM
If you play TGM2 you get access to sonic drop which makes Master mode easier (and more enjoyable), besides that, they're the same until halfway through, then TGM2's Master mode is faster while TGM1 stays at the same speed.

I'd like to add that the original TGM is probably better if your system has lesser specs, say, under 2 GHz or 512 RAM. If you can find the alternate MAME that doesn't have the animated backgrounds and hence runs TAP better, though...well, point me toward it since the last archive I got didn't work http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_redface.gif

Thank you, though I did check that site before...I'm going to try getting a different unzipping program since it keeps saying that the archive is "invalid or corrupted".
for me it works. i can unzip. i suggest you to use www.totalcommander.com (http://www.totalcommander.com/default.htm) , if you are used to the norton commander back in the dos era.
totalcommander has built in support for unpacking zip/rar and many more archives.

was just asking if he knows me from somewhere else and was pointing out that my S2 score was just a best run , not my average performance. i normally have trouble to reach S1. i can only aproach S2 of i am fully awake and ideally if someone watches me playing - strangely if someone watches, i am somehow more concentrated and play better...
whats even stranger is: if i play alone, i cannot force my self to be as nearly as awake / concentrated as if someone watches. where is my self-control http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

I was so surprised it took me a couple seconds to realize the game was still going during the credits.
Next goal is to lower the time, which shouldn't be hard, as I spent a lot of time doing singles and doubles to clear garbage.
But anyway, it's a great feeling to hit the GM rank for the first time!!!

That was at 1am. If I'd done it when I wasn't tired, I might have made the 7 second difference.
For points though, I was miles over - S9 was before 900. That helps because it means I have room to sacrifice stacking for speed a little.

I had almost given up on this game because of my numerous S9 but no Gm's. I usually get very nervous and lose all my stacking, just clearing singles and defending through the whole grade S9. I've reached 900 with a good stack and almost three minutes left numerous times and blown it all the time, often not even getting to 999.
Finally I barely made it, it's not a pretty one but it's Gm. I think 900-999 took me over 2 minutes and I was close to failure this time too. The last 10 pieces I just dumped on the top of the stack to get a final single at 999 before time ran out. Hopefully this makes future games a bit easier and less nervous now that I know it's possible.

Yea, I did that to to become Gm. It reduces the pressure.
However, I haven't been able to become Gm since that time (last summer).
My main goal was to become Gm is both noraml and 20g mode. And I did it. Then I lost the touch because I started to practice TGM2 master mode, and since TGM2 uses a better randomizer for stacking, I almost always lose the stack in TGM1 when I try to build.
However, I have gotten S9 in TGM2, and reached 999. However, not at the same time.
When I was Gm in TGM1, I could only get S1 in TGM2. So I have improved a lot.
It would be fin to actually beat my Gm time of 13'15 (same time in both Normal and 20g), but I can't seem to keep the stack, and by that I lose time.

L0st: I can understand you, TGM2 has a way more fair randomizer even if TGM usually is pretty good too. However I've been "starved" in TGM a few times and learnt to not build too daring as the risk involved is much higher than in TGM2. I've never made Gm in 20g but I've done 999, not fast enough. I do many mistakes before the game enters 20g mode, especially when "speeding up" pieces to fall faster, I hate it when you hear that click sound and you just created an ugly gap...
TGM2 also feels much more responsive and quick to react to your inputs which makes TGMs controls feel old and not very well "oiled". I've only made S6 in TGM2 though, which is way too little at level 950 something. The step to S1 seems much more far-fetched than the next S grades in TGM2. Sometimes I get a feeling that just a few more lines give you another S grade and they drop in quickly. I always get taken by surprise of the great speed increase at 900 compared to the earlier levels. In death I usually fail around just after 300 but I have a few 400+ under my belt.
I am going to focus on TGM1 now until I can get another Gm and feel comfortable that it wasn't just luck the first time around. I don't want to risk getting used to the smoother but faster TGM2 yet, although a few death modes in between helps keeping the speed up.

I have tried a few times. It isn't possible to perform faster than the emulator allows you to play without serious mistakes, that usually ends the game with a worse time. My computer seems to play both mame and zinc worse than for one year ago. But I play much better Heboris and UGM. I have no explaination for that.
Only Jagoris would allow a fair competition, according to me. Didn't you play the one hand on the real arcade? I am sure it helps alot. I tried to compete with your time once, and sure I could keep up during the levels 0-499 with maybe a minute after. But the 20g mode, I just lost time and time and time.

he probably use Zinc by seing the frame rate counter.
TGM1 use a 3D engine (as TGM3 btw), and Zinc have some option to smooth 3D texture rendering. But since the game originaly run in 320x240, and texture size adapted to it, near filtering give bad result.
This is an option you can disable. or maybe amnesia have randomly tweaked something http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gifhttp://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I seem to remember one of the PS1 emulators having a "2xSaI textures" or "Scale2x textures" option, which applies a filter to textures in much the same way that ZSNES and AdvanceMAME apply an upscaling filter to the whole screen.

Apparently, the trick is to hold down a rotate button before the I spawns, and then it won't appear flat. This works with other pieces as well, except O, of course.
PetitPrince
09-13-2007, 01:35 AM
Ah, the I rotations.
The first set of rotation I learned by heart. Well, ok, that's only two states °^_^. Anyway, observe this:
http://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/irot.png
Unlike SRS or TGM3, you can't make an I stand up. So this move won't work:
http://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/iusage4.gifhttp://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/iusage5.gif
But if you leave enough space in the third column, then it's ok.

Or you can use IRS. But that's not always an option.

The Initial Rotation System can take a while to get used to. At first I had difficulty with it as well, but after a while you pick up the timing for it and it becomes natural.
If you use IRS successfully, you'll hear a "schwing" sound as the piece enters the field, as well as the usual entry sound.

Congratulations to your first S grade http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
I remember when I got my first S grade. I also had problems with IRS and level 300+ then.
I am going to help you a little. First download and watch this movie:
http://www.arikaonline.com/download/movie/tgm.mpg
You won't be able to play this fast, but you can become a Gm player eventually! It is possible.
Now look how this guy plays during the first sections (a section is 0-100 levels.... One new background). He builds up the stack high, and leaves the hole to the right hand side of the field. This is what you should do, but slower. If you build the hole to the left hand side, you are doomed when the red I piece arrives at higher speeds.
After enough training you should be able to hit the S3 grade around level 300-400 and by that entering the top hi-score http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
To worry about later: Watch the guy entering level 500, all the fonts such as the time and score turns gold. This is 20g mode. In 20g mode you build your stack like a pyramid, and by that, the initial move can be rotated into position in the best direction that can be found. Check some of the neet blue piece (J) wall kicks, and also the crazy orange piece (L) DAS moves.
It is easy to blame the keyboard for mistakes, but eventually you must be able to fix those mistakes no matter if they were keyboard errors or your own errors. (yet again if you are familiar to Tetris already, you can probably recover your stack)
Hopefully this helps. One you have gotten S3 (weeks to months of training for me, but you are probably familiar to Tetris which I wasn't), you can ask how to train 20g mode. Good luck!

Yep thet is the minimul requirement to rotate the red I piece. Usually you have already rotated the piece during I.R.S.
The how to play demonstration in TGM shows both a S3 class player, and then a GM class player.
Differences in TGM1 demonstrations.
Class S3:
1. Rotates using one button at times (this is mainly to show that rotation skills is needed to play 20G mode).
2. No manual locking. Waits for pieces to lock automatically.
Class GM:
1. Makes a BRAVO which is almost impossible (showing off some fireworks is always nice)
2. Manual locks pieces to save time (which is the key to reach 999 in time for GM).
Webby, to help you to reach S3, I have uploaded a video at youtube that will slowly get S3. Slow videos are easier to follow and to learn from. You don't need to be super fast to get S3. But you need some basic TGM skills, like how to rotate a piece to fit into the current state of the stack.
Oh and this is not a show off. I am not good, just doing the job:

And a combo is done by clearing lines and again with the next block, etc.?
Yea, but must start a combo with a tetris (4 rows). That's why building the hole a little bigger than 1 column at the top, so that you can use megenta, cyan and orange pieces to continue the combo. But you also need to know when to stop, and start rebuilding again. Because if you clear too much of the stack, it may take additional time to rebuild before the next possible combo appears.
It is not complicated. It is random! one time it works, another time it fails. But overall, it should work to wait the same amount of intervals.
In that video I got one combo.The rest was more or less tetrises. That's the main goal. Don't wait for combos. Go for tetrises and a high stack. Combos will appear sooner than later by doing that.

No, but they're less efficient in terms of points per time than normal playing is unless you start with a tetris.

It is time for 20G mode training. The code for 20G mode is: Down, Down, Down, Down, Down, Down, Down, Down (that is 8 times), and C, B, A.

I found that a decent way to train for TGM (and how I think I got my Gm) is to move up to TA Death, or the equivalent on Heboris/whatever, so that you can continue to make large improvements due to the higher difficulty.
Then you can go back to TGM1 and it'll be a lot easier.
Still, you should wait until you're around S5/S6 as your highest before you do that.

Currently my biggest problem is what to do with block i can't place. I try to do someting strategically with them. But when i think there can be a block flipped in the gap i made i don't know how to flip it in and then i'm to late creating an even worse gap. I get S1 and S2 almost every game now, though that S3 was a 1 timer so far ...
I need some rest now.

A good feeling of what is possible or not will come as you play. It can take some time though, especially if you come from a SRS "button mashing to place the piece" environment.
One general indication I can give you is to remember that the best place to put a tetramino is the one that leave you with the maximum number of possibilities. If you must overhang, consider a place where a lot of tetramino can be used to fill the hole. Example:
http://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/overhangex1.png
Where should I put the Z piece ?
http://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/overhangex5.gif
That one should be avoided, because there is only one piece that can properly fit. You can still wait for it by placing the others into the left bowl (or by making a Tetris).
http://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/overhangex2.gifhttp://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/overhangex3.gifhttp://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/overhangex6.gif
That's pyramiding. Notice that you should avoid using a J on the left image (because of the need of another J), and that I don't like the O+L solution in the middle one at all.
http://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/overhangex4.gif
I'm ambivalent on this one. Filling the gap with a J (blue) is possible, but you'll need another one (or a I) to fill the subsequent hole, and it's bad. And it's very easy, especially in high speed, to make a bridge over the hole .
Still, I like building thing that are mostly flat. And it is easier to DAS to the left than tapping to the left or right once or twice.
Another piece of advice I can give you to familiarize yourself with ARS is to play Heboris/Lockjaw in 20G with an infinite lock delay. That way you can calmly build your stuff, try some wallkick, et cetera.

PetitPrince, I would actually be happiest with the first solution because you can happily stack on top of it while you wait for the L.
Of the middle three, the first is poor when using J or T, because you would ideally need another right away to stack properly. The second and third are both awfully slow moves which are prone to error due to excessive tapping.
The last solution is the one I would most likely use sub-20G (In 20G I would place it far left without rotation), but fixing it with the J is not a good idea. J in this particular field should be placed face up one from the right.
The example you give would've been done by me like this. Somehow i automatically place s or z pieces like that without reason.

I generally agree with Taratang here. Making a tuck spot for the L or J on the right is the best thing to do. Firtly, you only lose 1 column of build space so the risk of further holes/overhangs is reduced. Secondly, even if you mess up, you have created a hole on the side of the screen, near your tetris hole. It is very very easy to fix such a hole, even at high speed 20G.

In 20G, this placement would often work; but I tend to opt for these next placements to minimize risks, especially when there is only 1 preview and the expectation for a T/L or a JI is low. Note: this is not good for score.

Great. Improvements are always good. I still would wish you to get S3 a little bit earlier than around level 400. Try to get it around level 350, and you might get close to S4. S4 might seem far away, but if your stack is clean from errors at the time you hit S3, there might be easier than you think to hit S4.

I don't call that training. If you want to play fast in the future, you need to play slow for now. Go back to 20g mode training in TGM1. Try to beat your best reached grade. Learn to rotate correctly to survive longer.
And for the Death Mode argument posted earlier... Death Mode != Survive Mode.
EDIT: Just to make you see from my point of view: I have reached level 300 twice in Death Mode since the year 2005. And I am a Gm TGM1 ranked player. Even if you may rach level 300 in Death, it is not going to make you become a Gm player in TGM1. You are still a S3 ranked TGM1 player, and you really should do something about that. (And yea I have played 100-120 Death Mode games in my life. And the reason I haven't played more is because it is dull, and way too fast btw)

Isn't there a cheat to activate in tgm1 so i can have 20G on all the time?
the cheat is: DDDD DDDD C B A (D=down, C=button3, B=button2, A=button1). enter it at the title screen in TGM, then if you do it correctly, the bottom right corner will display "20G MODE" in red letters. press start and there you go.
actually T.A.DEATH is harder than TGM's 20G MODE because in TAP, the lock delay and line clear delay are getting faster and faster while in TGM they stay the same.
so the advice to play TGM's 20G MODE first is right on the money.

Hi. I am still try to get GM on tgm. For the past few months ive been concentrating on 20G mode. Ive made a small vid from level 500-999 using texmaster. Any suggestions with ways i could improve my 20g game or where im going wrong will be greatly appreciated. Ive watched it back a few times and i realise i missed some pretty obvious better placements i could have made. But generally, how am i doing?
*I made a few dodgy inputs within the first minute and misplaced a few pieces, mostly due to playing texmaster in a window while recording with hypercam at the same time which lagged the controls somewhat, and im used to playing on a stick. Any excuess.... thanks.

Mosquito, Death is probably better training for 20G than the actual 20G mode on TGM, because it's faster.
The kouza site (http://www13.plala.or.jp/TETRiS_TGM/kouza/index.htm) should be good enough to learn the extra things that help 20G play. Sure, it's in Japanese, but you can get enough from the pictures.
Really though, I think it's just experience and practice and eventually you'll get the Gm run. I was stuck around the S5~S7 mark for absolutely ages.

Is that an artifact of emulation? I know a lot of N64 emulators don't show block colors in The New Tetris.

First, you are very strong in general, relative to your goal. Just watching that I thought you should be able to get Gm. You have a pretty good feel of what is and isn't possible. There's a few advanced placements you didn't see... But looking at your game I can tell that one or 2 techniques isn't what is preventing your Gm.
You need practice digging through garbage. You're pretty good at stacking cleanly, and minimizing the damage when holes must be made. But mistakes tend to last way longer than they should. Around level 600 you made a hole in column 3, a fairly easy column to open up holes in, and it stayed with you the whole game. Beyond that one particular hole, in general too many of your placement choices were ignorant of the holes. I could give specific examples from your video if you need them. But in general, you want to avoid stacking on top of the hole when it is near the surface, assuming your screen is stable of course.

Lost your problem is dead simple. Just lock more aggressively. You clearly show that you know all you need to survive, and cleanly at that. You're just playing your moves at a leisurely pace. Push yourself a hair faster and you'll get it no problem... Even if you make a few more mistakes I'm sure you can deal with them. Remember, most of the time attack comes from reducing the active time of the pieces, not from reducing the number of line clear animations.

It really feels good when you've mastered the game enough to pull it off every time if you want to. Of course, usually you'll try to play your fastest and therefore die somewhat often. But knowing that you can leisurely get Gm on demand brings quite the sense of satisfaction.
Not to mention doing it on demand, one-handed. Also, lol I just noticed Amnesia added my one handed performance to the ranking. 9th place w00t! http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I think it will definitely happen with Death M. Already, I think at least jago and I could hit 500 extremely often if we weren't playing for speed.

To survive at 400 is still a problem for me..
I can even play in locking at 400, I play normaly, perfectely in thinking "I am invisible I manage the speed", and SUDDENLY, PATATRA!!! 3 tetriminos fall in a row without any reaction from me and I don't understand what happens http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_mad.gif ..I lose often around 480 always with a good time..I will edit an article to explain this phenomen and by the way, explain the dangers of the manual locking..

Exactly. I don't run anymore for "speed" in death mode, it's been a long time i didn't broke 40sec first section. I just concentrate on Kan's advise about performing more tetris : it help more on the overall skill and stability. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

I had the exact same problem making the switch from a good TDS player to a good TGM player. I could easily cope with the speed, and showed it with my Lockjaw times (which I'm now somehow unable to even get close to), but the rotation would screw me up every time.
You'll get to a point where it starts to click, and from then onwards you'll start smashing your records and making rapid improvements for a bit.

Decided to play a few (okay, more like 20) rounds of TGM to get a decent score on the board after playing some Heboris tonight. Figured I might as well get a score up so I don't look like a TOTAL lurker, so I fired up XMAME on the tower and...well...got something, at least.
What I will say is this: ARS messes with my head. Between Heboris and Tetris DS, I just can't seem to get the mindset switched.
(Also, I'd like to note some interesting oddities: I can do decently on Heboris with TGM settings (Heboris rots, obviously) on 20G (survived to ~600 there), and can do somewhat okay on TGM 20G (survived to ~300 there), but for the life of me I can't figure out how to survive the 300-399 range very well, The somewhat hi gravity always seems to mess me up--but if I survive to 400 I'll usually do fine and recover a bit.)
Another couple things that have been frustrating me:
How SLOOOOW sub20G TGM play is. I really miss sonic drop from Heboris. (on that note, I really hate slipping things under gaps on TGM as well, as you either have to hold down pretty much frame-perfect, or wait about three minutes for it to get to where you can slide it in.)
The lack of I-kicks--it's not as bad when your stack is clean and you're going to the right, but I can NEVER get it to cooperate going to the left short praying my stack will let it slide all the way over after IRSing it. If there's anything that's been killing me, it's not being able to clean up on the left side because of that.
Either way, at least I'm on the board. Expect improvements at some point or another, such as when I'm not fatigued from trying to get SOMETHING to work.

Both of these problems can be solved to some extent by keeping your stack as high as possible until you get to around 450~500, where you start to clear it down.
It means you don't have to wait as long when it's really low gravity, and can place the pieces quicker, but it also creates 20G artificially when you get to the 300 mark.

Jujube, if you stopped flitting around with various games and modes and concentrated on TGM, I reckon you could get Gm pretty quickly.

You move ahead of CT one handed, though. That's gotta be a good thing, right?

You're not far away jujube.
Best way to improve time would probably be keeping the stack as high as possible from 0~300, to lose less time through the lack of a hard drop.

the lack of a hard drop
Ohh..I was searching the good english term for that... http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
ADVICE :
For the 0 - 300 , try to play as high as you can, around 2/3 ot the stack, in order to save few second from the lack of hard dropping.
At the end, around 950 try to finish on the bottom of the matrix, it is more interesting to finish very low with single and double than trying to continue Tetrises after S9.
This is the optimal and minimal time I recommend for the whole game :
0 - 100 ---> 85 sec ---> 1:25
100 - 200 ---> 85 sec ---> 2:50
200 - 300 ---> 85 sec ---> 4:15
300 - 400 ---> 80 sec ---> 5:35
400 - 500 ---> 80 sec ---> 6:55
500 - 600 ---> 80 sec ---> 8:15
600 - 700 ---> 80 sec ---> 9:35
700 - 800 ---> 80 sec ---> 10:55
800 - 900 ---> 80 sec ---> 12:15
900 - 999 ---> 75 sec ---> 13:30

You might want to replace hard drop with firm drop. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

He plays very well but does to much "tap tap tap tap" and looses a lot of time.

I feel pretty cumfortable now on tgm1, managing to get Gm at almost every game and always finishing around 12min10.
First time I tried tgm1 20G mode today:

Funny to see the time is so close to my usual normal mode ones. Makes you feel how well the game was programmed.
