Holy shit your style is fucking crazy! 8D Sick overhangs man, I love it.
Congratulations, and enjoy your day of infinite happiness!
Thank you dudes, for all support and kind words.
I also thank this forum for being an amazing source of information, without it things would have been different; haven't you noticed the overall community level is improving?

If you do it, France will become the 2nd world nation of DEATH mode. Which would mean a lot of thing...

I had some great luck during the 300-399 section, managed to get almost all the way down to the bottom... which I really needed since in 400+ the pieces seem totally out of my control, it's like they just move wherever the heck they want to move :o

finally hit 500! now to get consistently faster...
New record for TA Death: level 434 @ 3:31:68. It was the first time I reached level 400 after the Carnival of Death. I was able to take a better control at 300-level even though the field got messy at times. Sometimes I used manual lock, so it was kinda cool. 400-level was very messy, but I'm getting closer to level 500!

Hey, you finally got it! Enjoy your day of happiness. Your style is clearly developing. Something I notice in your video is that you hesitate a lot with each piece in the first 3 sections -- to get faster you should work on making faster placement decisions and pre-charging DAS more during ARE. Nonetheless a really nice clean game and a great first M.

I'm working on getting faster and increasing the M rate ;)
The first three sections are my main problem, like you said, I think this will look much better in a month.

Confirmed. 999 @ 6:20:58 on stick. Had a 991 on my first attempt, and I think the 999 was my fourth or so.
Congrats man!

Haha, I don't take video in the arcade. :< I don't have a good way to set up a camera there right now and there is no video capture system.
there is no video capture system.
We can build it. We have the technology.

05-20-2011, 03:23 AM
Yeah, perhaps. I haven't bothered Eric about that sort of thing yet since I know he's busy, but I might ask about the feasibility of video out or controller ports at some point. It all depends on whether he'd like to spend time on such a project.

I can't believe that i was unable to get level 300 ! Shame on me

But i am confident !
Controls have been improved in TGM2, right ? It seems that tetromino "slide" better than in TGM...or maybe i feel that because i have change my emulator

1: the ratio lock delay/ARE makes thing easier and more sympathic on TAP.
2 : the input lag is really shorter on this MAME with TAP than the other you played for TGM1.

tet2brik: Dude, you improve insanely fast. It'll be interesting to see how you'll handle death 300+, which I have struggled with for like a year now...
May I ask how old you are?
tet2brik
06-08-2011, 08:32 AM
I'm 30 and i know tetris since i have a gameboy, 20 years ago (like most people of my generation !).
ahhhh i remember those gameboy years playing great games like "double dragon 2", "zelda Link's Awakening", and of course Tetris ! :p
nicofromtokyo
06-08-2011, 09:04 AM
That's a good news for the 30 years old-like guys like me, our brain is still efficient even after 30 :).
How long do you play per day? You have maybe a secret tech to teach us? :)
SYN7HOR
06-08-2011, 03:14 PM
That sucks for me. I was hoping you were like 16 or so. I'm 34 and also had a Game boy. Got mine on Christmas of '88 I think, so that's 23 years soon... damn...I never really liked Tetris before I discovered TGM though. Arcadestick+ARS+20G is where it's at.

Level 300 at least !
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1203/0003rd.png
Ok it's not incredible but i used a technic which can be useful to you, newbie like me :p
Yesterday, i've read the post from EDO "TGM2:TAP, TGM2:TA and TGM mame cheats". So i used cheats just to see what's level 300 in TA Death.
The first time, i tried level 300, i thought that the gaming was bugging as the speed was so high O_O
Today, i've trained again in level 300 using cheat : my mission was just to clear 1 or 2 lines which i was able to do after 3 or 4 games.
After that, i play T.A Death with no cheat and i was able to get level 311 very easily for my first play.
It seemed that playing in very high speed "train" my brain
By the way, now that i've tried level 300, i must say that you guys who are Master or GM are just cyborgs :D
Yesterday, i've read the post from EDO "TGM2:TAP, TGM2:TA and TGM mame cheats". So i used cheats just to see what's level 300 in TA Death.
That thread is really old; I don't think I've updated it in years. Also, just so you know: from about mame version 0.126 onwards, the internal cheat engine has been completely recoded, so the old cheat format no longer works. If you want to use a recent version of mame, you'll need an .xml cheat file instead of the older .dat file. There's a version floating around somewhere that I wrote about half a year ago, but again, it's not been updated since.

06-12-2011, 01:05 PM
Ow, I didn't know about this method. I am using MAMEUI32 0.141, is there any possibility to use a cheat mode, on TGM or TAP ??
Download this (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8467027/cheat.zip), and place it in your MAMEUI32 folder, alongside your MAMEUI32.exe. Make sure you go to
Options--->Default Game Options...--->Miscellaneous
and tick the box that says "Enable game cheats". Then when you're playing, press the TAB key and go to the Cheat menu. So far, I've only written cheats for tgm2p in the new .xml format. Hopefully this will be enough to keep you going for a while.
If you want to practice Death mode at higher speeds, because of the level 500 torikan, trying to set the level above 500 doesn't quite work right. You might like to try using the Start at Level 499 cheat instead, and just play on from there.

Thank you so much for the tips, it works perfectly.
I tried to play Death at 500... And I understood one thing... I will do my best to become GM at TGM... and give up TAP :D
Btw, is there something similar to TGM? Is is possible to play TGM at Death speed?

Clearing TAP Master isn't so difficult once you can clear TGM. You only need to get a little used to Death 300 speed.

There are cheats for TGM, but only for very old MAME versions. 20G in TGM is constantly the same speed. You can use the 20G code (press down 8 times followed by C,B,A) to play 999 levels of 20G which is a nice challenge. ^^

Thanks! :D There is no video, sadly because I can't follow easy instructions for recording q_q
It was my first time reaching 500. I think I had a 49x run before that I didn't post, though.
I'm hopefully going to play a better game and get a video in the (near?) future. I can hopefully learn to successfully manlock in 300s to get an even better time :3

I am playing exclusively 20G in TGM these last weeks to improve my stacking abilities, but need to relax sometimes by playing some Death games. Thanks for the cheat mode, I am now able to train the speed of Lvl. 300, so I guess it allowed me to reach that level today.
But for the moment, I need to keep on concentrating on that f<3<3<3<3g TGM's 20G ! One day GM I shall be!

Hi Nico !
I try to play everyday and i always do small sessions (2 or 3 games maximum for each session). My session never exceed 45 min, the more i play the more my skill decrease.
Anyway, my recent improvement appears before 2 weeks without playing TAP (holidays and no computer).

Hi Nico !
Anyway, my recent improvement appears before 2 weeks without playing TAP (holidays and no computer).
You mean *after* without playing, maybe ;). Do you manual-lock anywhere in the game ?
When I play to TAP : Death, I usually do 10 games at Lvl.500, then 10 games at Lvl.400, then 10 at 300. It's the best way I found to make improvement ta high speed (Best from 500 : 55, from 400 : 62 ). No way to manual lock after 200 :p.

I'm pretty sure all that matters is 3:25 at 500 for M. Unless you mean what are good times to shoot for for the early sections in order to break the torikan.
Yep, sorry, that's what I wanted to ask.

I would even push the first section a little faster if possible. It shouldn't be out of your reach if you can get to level 500 at all.

From my recent training:
If you reach 300 at 1:59 or less, you don't need to lock at all from 300 to 500 to reach 500 at 3:24 (but still need to play clean and don't loose time at counterstops)
1:55 is perfect because you can make plenty of mistakes without locking at all (well, unless you loose 10 seconds at 399 ^^)
If you reach 300 at 2:05, you won't need to lock IF and only if you play perfectly clean, get some tetrises and so on (I frequently start to lock at around 485 because I realise I won't make it). If you lock a bit now and then, it's perfect.
In my opinion, the easiest section to improve massively is the 200-300 section. It's still "not that" difficult and you get really fast time if you lock aggressively.
To conclude, I would say that if you can lock all the 300 section, you won't have any problems reaching M grade consistantly.
So... play only the 300 section from now :)

Thanks for the advices.
BTW, update:
357 @ 03:14:71
the problem is that reaching 300 in 1:55 requires much more skill (on a western scale at least) than simply surviving 300-500, i've done it maybe once only
Concentrate on reaching level 300 between 02:05 and 02:10 and surviving 300-500 for now nicofromtokyo. Check out my first m that I linked to in my signature. It's a good example on how to obtain m without manual locking through 300-500. ^^

I really wonder why, we white people, should suffer any kind of complex compared to any asian players

It's just a matter of time, I think. Beside a few players that saw exceptionally fast improvement, the Western community is about where it should be considering that it sprouted up a few years after TGM first hit Japanese arcades.
I wanted to stress that 300@1:55 is very very good altough some guy like 309 can reach it in less than 1:40. I believe that if you can do that 1:55 you are already at M level.

I shoot for...
100 @ 0:40-0:47
200 @ 1:15-1:25
300 @ 1:58-2:07
400 @ 2:35-2:42
500 @ 3:15-3:25
I am usually 1:58-2:07 at 300. Manual locking 300-400 gets me to 400 at about 2:35-2:40. I can manlock 400 but usually don't, training for the m speed, and get m at 3:18 or thereabouts.

I think your own manual-lock comfortability and style (osaka-style? >=D) should determine where you should manual-lock, given the rough constraints. Clearly you need to lock all of 0-300, but beyond that you have some flexibility.
I myself prefer to go through 0-300 trying to go "pretty fast", but not blazingly fast because that ends up making me slower as I end up making more mistakes. Then I manual lock all of 300, possibly making a few mistakes in the process. Once I hit 400 I stop manual locking immediately and focus on clean stacking and downstacking, which helps me hit 500 with a lower stack (and therefore better time).
Basically, exactly what rednefed said.
Here's a video of my first M where I got a stupidly terrible 50-second first section time, hit 300 at 2:08, and then manual locked till 400 at 2:44, where I focus on downstacking and reach 500 at 3:20.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9g7mssvOwQ
Again, you may choose to try and get through 0-300 faster, using either smart stacking (though, keep in mind that line clear is more negligible in death mode), or osaka-style bruteforcing, and then manual lock little (or even none) of 300. Or you may choose to manual lock the whole thing, even 400-500. I think crazedreveng does this and was probably doing so when he got his M. If you're one of those people where not manual locking seems to throw you out of control, you might want to try it if you can handle the speed. On the other hand if you're like me and you handle non-manual lock finesse a lot more comfortably, I think manual locking 400-500 is really unnecessary considering you can focus on downstacking instead (it'll prepare you for the transition into 500 anyways).
I also personally don't recommend "lock half of the time" for any section. Maybe other people have had more success with it, but I find that I need to either commit myself to locking or commit myself to not locking--if I try to "lock when I feel comfortable and then stop when things get hectic" it leads to a very unstable feeling of play trying to transition between the two modes.

My biggest problem is that if I don't lock at 400, I don't feel like I control the game ,therefore, I play the 400 section better if I lock.
However, if I lock at 400, I absolutely need to lock at 500 (which is rather, er, HARD lol) or else, I will do a lot of "IRS misdrops" (pressing one button thinking I will IRS when the previous tetromino wasn't actually locked).
Damn do I hate that 400 section T___T
Edit: felt like I didn't improve for ages

I wish next time, I'll improve a lot more ;)

I think I mainly do better when not manual locking not because of the raw speed, but because I can spend lock delay time thinking about and preparing for the next piece's placement, which is a lot longer than ARE alone. I guess the technically the ramifications of shorter lock delay + ARE are similar to as if you had cut lock delay yourself by manual-locking, but it still feels different since you're "done" with the current piece earlier.
Theoretically you could learn to recognize situations where rotations or horizontal motions won't affect the current piece, and use it to your advantage to "pre-" IRS or DAS the next piece, but that's probably too complicated to really think about seriously, and shouldn't be necessary anyways.

Level 500 or m, I'm getting close!
New personal best: level 494 @ 3:28:15! Medal: ST gold (no SK).
Unfortunately, I didn't record this game. This was one of the best games I've had in TAP Death.
I played on a more powerful computer today, and I think the game ran smoother. This definitely helped my speed and rhythm :)
