Very good initiative jujube!

It's...irritating when I search a particular video and I don't succed to find it..So thank you!

Don't forget people to often update this thread..

Maybe we could think to organize a wiki with a nice tree structure...

example :

-game

-mode

-guy

And I profite to ask this :

Do you know a good soft which could allow me to record and translate an inp into video format?

When you make an inp, the most of time you must make 10 bad games before making a good..I've had a lot of chance to catch my S8 (9min36) in a first shoot.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

Most screen recording software I tried either didn't work, or did but caused a lot of slowdown on my PC.

I find the best method is just to use a digital camera, square on to the screen, and on a pile of books or something to get it to the right height.

You could hack the emulator to close and reopen the inp whenever a coin is inserted. LJ in auto-record mode does something similar: close and reopen the ljm whenever the game starts.

Recent MAME's can record MNG files (basically PNG in animated form). It's then possible to create an AVI or whatever from that. You'd also have to get MAME to output the sound as a seperate WAV and stitch it together.

Yes colour_thief I've already tried it!

But my PC can't support it! He is not enough powerfull..

Or if you want I can record a death gm in 5:10 with that.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
Rosti is right, a simple camera during the inp is loaded, and that create a more realistic effect.. http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Do you think my S8 could be on the list of video? Or I try to record a S9, or a better time?

If you can play TAP in MAME, you can do it all:

1. Record the INP.

2. Replay the INP while telling MAME to record MNG and WAV.

3. Convert the MNG to AVI and stitch the WAV for sound.

The only step that must be realtime is #1.

ct, maybe he's saying he can't record period, since his computer's not powerful enough. screen video capture does take enormous cpu consumption.

maybe you could play the game on your computer, save everything, and then temporarily use someone else's computer just for the capture. usb flash drives are very useful for that sort of thing.

just a question for anyone with a video on the list, mostly for TGM series videos:

i'm trying to include the level, time, and if the player made M or GM grade in the game. i also have the time of the entire length of the video, which in the case of the video matt put up on youtube is 34 seconds longer than the game time (i assume because of lag during capturing). should i only include the time that's on the game clock in these videos?

P.S. thanks again to everyone who is contributing to this wiki article by uploading games, linking to games, and organizing video titles

Likewise, the time on my TOD videos is about 15 seconds longer than the play time because it includes time spent in menus.

should i only include the time that's on the game clock in these videos?

I'd suggest including both. We should reformat it into a table anyway.

You can get good at invisible challenge if you practice. There are a couple things you can do with fan games: Play TOD (http://www.pineight.com/tod/default.htm) and get past the 9 minute mark to obscure the playfield without completely hiding it. Play LJ with "Hide blocks in well" turned on. I would imagine that Heboris has a similar option.

DIGITAL
04-05-2007, 10:21 PM
Yeah, practice is really the only way.

I'm guessing it has to do more with the mental image you have of the field. I think to play invisible effectively, you have to be more than capable of playing at very high speeds. To keep up with the memorization, you'd have to slow the game down mentally with your analytic skills.

I read an article in scientific American a while ago, that had a bit in it about really good chess players, and how they play nearly as good without the board as with it, because they have such a clear picture in their mind, and they have played so much that they know heaps of openings and all this sort of thing. Id imagine tetris would be similar, in a way.

Edit: needle there was also a part in that article that discussed players memorizing chess board layouts. If the layout was taken from midway through a game, pros could memories in seconds and recall hours later with startling accuracy, but if the pieces were randomized, they faired little better than non-chess players. not really tetris related so i kept it in this post, but still interesting.

I also heard from a professor about how professional Shogi (Japanese chess) players memorize game board layouts at extreme accuracy, but also breaks down rapidly to layman levels when the labels on the pieces have been changed to different symbols. One test subject supposedly even begged to stop the test, saying that he felt continuing would make his skills deteriorate.

Damn me for not being able to immediately provide a source, but it it's true, I guess it talks a lot about the role of optimization in human performance.

You can adapt, but it takes a while.

I messed up so much on Lockjaw when the rotation was set to Tetris DS. In theory it's the one I'm most used to, but with a keyboard it's not, and I seem to keep keyboard and gamepad Tetris separate in my head, because I'd continually misdrop near the centre because I'd press the direction too many times or too few.

It's true in less "extreme" cases as well. Several people I know struggle know some phone numbers in one language, and some in another language, and struggle to recognise/remember a number in the language that they didn't "learn" it in.

Is it the way the game is set up with DAS and things, or is that not particularly fast?

I've got a video of caffeine beating your world champion by 10 seconds in Tetris Elements (he did it in 42s).

And according to the wayback machine (http://web.archive.org/web/20060107132642/http_3A/www.tetrisconcept.com/default.htm), he also did it in 38s on a mobile phone O_o .

im not trying to brag or anything, just simply adding another clip to the post. i did not upload the clip nor did i write the blog. Caffeine is a very fast player.

oh btw, prince, i used to work for Blue Lava Wireless and from what i remember, not once did a tetris deluxe have a 40 lines variant that was actual 40 lines. What it comes down to is you clear ~5 tetrises and the game is over. fyi, i did that variant in 35s.

Rosti, yes this is how the game is made. I pushed for a faster delay, but got shutdown. Anything faster than that delay can not be accepted in a game, it wont pass QA.

Rosti LFC

I didn't mean anything by the video. It just seemed that for a "world record holder" that wasn't particularly fast.

Then again, if that's the speed the game allows, then it makes no difference.

caffeine
04-19-2007, 08:42 PM
Won't pass QA even if it was an option? I understand new players wouldn't may not take well to faster horizontal speed, but what about a slow/fast option? Or you could do a sensitivity gauge.

kbr420
04-20-2007, 04:04 AM
world record holder, haha. Never noticed that! when windows comes out, im pretty sure all the faster players will be right up there with me or faster.

caffeine, as an option it might pass qa. i would definetly push for that option. Everyone has their own comfortable settings they wish to play the game, just like fps games where u can adjust sens of mouse and movement. i agree with u there.

HOWEVER, what our company is trying to do is standardize these settings. Meaning everyone plays with the same delay/movement settings and it would be fair across the board to everyone(pros-noobs). That way it is a more controlled enviornment and it would be noticable to see who the faster/better players really are.

Needle

Is this talking in the scope of just Tetris Zone, or all subsequent games?

tepples
04-20-2007, 05:58 AM
The standardization of the "weight" of tetrominoes is probably for the same reason that The Tennis Company (http://www.usta.com/home/default.sps) specifies an official size and mass for a tennis ball.

caffeine
04-20-2007, 06:08 AM
i agree. tetris games should follow a standard. but i urge this one issue not only because i want to play faster and want others to play faster too, but because players with weak ethics also want to play faster (in which case i don't want them to play faster). and through the use of macros, they will be able to play much faster than everyone else. macros are frowned upon or banned in a lot of competitive games, but there's one easy way to make sure no one uses them in this game, and that's to allow fast horizontal speed-- where macros become useless.

edit: i think sega age's horizontal speed looks very good. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KphL8NXAvp0 ). sega's QA can't be any less tough than bps.

I'd say yes, it's a reflex a TDS player acquires. You really have to see a 4p match among high 7k and 8k players to see how the slow gameplay of TDS can be turned into something frantic and fast paced.

("so many T-Spins" might have been the phrase you wanted)

After a while, it sort of does become natural to set them up. That was an example of a game where I used a lot. It's the only reason we picked it really, because the speed was far from excellent.

Most of the complicated setups have to be learned. You need to at least know the structure. With t-spin doubles, which is all I really use most of the time, it's simply spotting them.

When you play Tetris enough, you get to see how the pieces fit together to stack neatly. T-spins just require a slightly different way of looking at it. After a bit of practice, spotting how to place the pieces to set up t-spin doubles becomes second nature.

It is with me anyway.

this is my personal favorite method for making t-spin triples (actually it's easier if you set it up away from the center). it gives you a little flexibility in the setup depending on what pieces you get in what order, though you might have to use your first L or J to make room for S or Z on the sides. there isn't a diagram exactly like this in the wiki but there should be somewhere. maybe i'll add it soon. i learned it from watching Triple Lei's and TKI's videos.

The score is good and high because combos are easier to get in 5-wide, and a GM on any game is an achievement, but overall, the video isn't as crazy as I expected. There doesn't seem to be a lot of DAS charging. And why do the tetrominoes come out half a block over(!)?

DASing can be dangerous in big mode with only one preview. You can't afford to make a wrong placement. But the player didn't DAS at obvious times and also rotated the wrong way in some instances, so I guess I agree with you that the video wasn't as crazy as I expected.

I'm also guessing that the spawning position is meant to give the player a helping hand, kind of like a hold piece. Can't have that T get stuck in the center with such a low ceiling.

I think it's related to the fact that they move sidewys half a block per step, meaning that using DAS and wallkicks is a must.

In the event of a time out, the furthest level wins. In the event of a tie, the defending player wins. By random coincidence, "player 2" was defending for the 2 failures (time outs). For the other 2 videos, the "player" who reaches level 100 first wins. In fact for the final video this was "player 1". http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif It's possible to clear lines together for a draw, but my timing was slightly off.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that in a while. That's actually more or less exactly how I position my hands to work the controls... I was questioning my technique after reading about the one-handed Death player that pinched the shaft of the joystick with the base of his thumb and index finger. I have browsed around a few of the best TGM3 player's website and seen their stuff. They are all very good players. But there are only two that can match this speed shown in the video... And they can match it, and do even faster.... below 5 min! So it is not fake.

Why they can perform such aggressive play in instant invisible roll may be because of the red I piece and how it can be roteted. In TAP, you can't do that many tetrises.

One more thing, cheating in TGM3 is not possible.

What about some sort of modified Colin Fahey AI system? Complex, but not impossible

I agree it is not impossible, for somebody who want to demonstrate "something". I don't know if we can call this a cheat btw...

If we really want to know the result of an "ultimate perfect play" then we can do it by statistic calculation. Finally the only thing this machine would reveal is Gm rank reward requierment (if it exist of course).

but it don't like the idea of a machine demonstration running on a program (game) designed for humain reflex limit capabilities. It would simply kill the magic. So i prefer discover it from a human...

Of course a good way to know the unknow rules that demotivates top players, but a video demonstration should never be released to large public.

Haha, it's a crime to keep playing someone that is good when you're losing? *hides*

Although it's definitely annoying when they run away after that 1 win in like 20. On second thought, you don't even get that many points from beating them anyway so it's pointless to keep on playing. Possibly. I don't care enough to do the gruntwork though... But if someone else created a distinct *.txt for every round, filling it with the written out piece sequence eg. "SZTLOOJZIT..." then I'd have a look at it. I did this once before for over a thousand pieces in TGM3 and it was painful.

Supposedly... until there were mentions of people getting the same piece 3 times in a row...

I took a guess at 14 bag (the only currently known non-history randomizer that will do it consistently enough to be noticeable) and calculated that it will happen about once every 6 sprints. But then there was an edit on the wiki that said that it's not 14 bag...

4:27.58 beats the previous best time I've heard of (4:28 by AYA). But yes, a big http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif at it being only today's second best time...

Regarding the part that's a shame: YES. It's almost one of my pet peeves; I've seen a couple of really good Shirase videos like a 4:47 flat (I think) by I forget who, but then...there's a fail on the credit roll. It's just annoying that such a great video ends that way. Actually, part of me like the 4:48.98 better because of the credit roll...

In my own opinion a shirase 0 >1300 is not impossible in sub 4min. no doubt this is a great play but we definitly see a lot of slow down phase resulting from stacking error.

He also prefer to play secure by stopping manual lock before entering 1200+ section.

But i'm not speculating about 1301 conditions. Just about pure performance.

- - - -

Official ARIKA video Gm is quite impressive. Simply coupled with the MasterM in 7:15.03 performance,

we can start to speculate that Main requirement is focused on the invisible staff roll.

I was really astonished when i saw first time manual locking on TGM3 invisible staff roll.

but from the TGM2 Master mode green/yellow line Gm difference, by speculating on the same kind but harder requirement on TGM3, locking may become important.

With fog dispersal, i suppose that more and more Gm players will appear in the next 6 month...

I'd had similar fun by switching on the full invisibility for player one, but not player two. You can get some extremely strange-looking stacks.

That's not even his top time (04:19:78).

For a point of reference, the previous top record by AYA is 04:23:08.

A quickie video showing a strong 0-100 section in Shirase. It's somewhat close to the current record, and there's lots of player commentary in both Japanese and English.

It's probably a good idea to post a comment to that effect on youtube. I imagine it takes a huge effort to translate things, and a bit of encouragement would go a long way.
