View Full Version : Records: Tetris with CARDCAPTOR SAKURA!!

How can we not have a Records thread for this seminal classic?! Obviously, this is only for Normal Mode, as Easy doesn't keep records. For ease of reading, I've separated the records for the individual stages according to their rows as they appear on the stage select screen. No need to work out your total time, just submit your individual stage times, and I'll take care of the rest.

Ai's guide for people having trouble reading the Japanese: Tetris with Cardcaptor Sakura - Eternal Heart ^^.pdf (http://db.tt/cieSSGm)
(pm me if the link goes dead, and I'll upload it again.)

I hope you guys don't mind - I've opted for a different format for the individual records, which I think will be about 10 times easier to maintain.

Actually, the piece sequences in Eternal Heart are randomly generated. When repeating a stage, the player is given the option of using the same sequence again, or generating a new random sequence. Half the art to time-attacking this game is in knowing what a "good" piece sequence looks like when it's generated.

Ahhh, gotcha. Cool stuff, maybe I'll work on that later today.

I was pleasantly surprised by this game. CUTEST Tetris game ever and a MUST play for all TGM (ARS) players!!! ^^ This game is nice for those who want a little change and improve piece placement. It's very relaxing too if you're not aiming for insane times. It's been a few months since I last played Tetris for so long. I may have actually played for 7 hours yesterday including 3 hours straight in the first session of the day. This also includes figuring out everything about the game and all. Today I played far less, but I managed to improve all my times. I would say almost 10 hours puzzle fun so far. Playing the game made me look for the Cardcaptor Sakura anime and manga too. I haven't seen or read it so far even though I heard about it before.

Easy mode is really too easy and is only good for warming up. Normal mode is where you want to be. There is a 20 minute time limit to complete this mode. First time I played through it, it took me close to 18 minutes to complete the whole course. Then I found out that you can change the tetromino sequence and use it to your advantage to finish the stages a lot faster. Doing so I finished the game close to 6 minutes. Too bad there is no hard mode because the game could use more content. Well I'll keep improving my times from time to time and I'll try to unlock everything.

It's not hard to work out your total time by yourself. Under every stage you select you will find a clock with your best time next to it and an hourglass with your remaining time until the 20 minutes time limit is over. There are 2 ways you can get your total time easily:

1. Play the boss stage ERIOL STAGE (????????) and get a personal best. After the game, completion time for the stage and remaining time of the 20 minute time limit will be shown. So to get total playing time: 20:00:00 time limit - time left over (shown next to the hourglass).

[/url]

In this case for me: 20:00:00 - 13:57:25 = 06:02:75

2. If you already played through all stages you only need to go to the stage selection screen. Choose the ERIOL STAGE (????????). Best time and time remaining will be shown in the right down corner next to the stage name. So: 20:00:00 time limit - remaining time + best time ERIOL STAGE (????????) = total time it took you to finish all courses.

In this case: 20:00:00 - 15:19:36 + 01:22:11 = 06:02:75

Here are all my times:

TOTAL TIME : 06:02:75
FIRERY STAGE (??????????) : 00:04:02
SWORD STAGE (???????) : 00:09:58
JUMP STAGE (????????) : 00:08:44
FLY STAGE (???????) : 00:10:82

SHIELD STAGE (????????) : 00:07:48
WATERY STAGE (?????????) : 00:19:37
ERIOL STAGE (????????) : 01:22:57

As mentioned before all these personal best are from today.

I kept playing until I beat edo at least once. I managed to do better only a few times so far. Some of your times are insane edo! I'll try to get my total time under 6 minutes later.

^^

EDIT:

I've gotten under 6 minutes. ^^

Ai, I'm glad you're enjoying the game! It's great, isn't it? I've stuck your scores up there, thanks for providing some competition! I'll have to see if I can reclaim my top spot on those stages where you beat me.

Thanks! But I'm sure colour_thief will destroy both of us when he starts submitting scores... Maybe we'll have to team up together and devise some awesome strategies to beat him!

E-Heart does emulate it, but I'm not sure exactly how accurately. As this Records board is in its relative infancy, I think it's probably best if we wait for it to grow a little before deciding whether your scores should be ranked or not, but feel free to submit them, and for the time being I'll put them at the bottom with the word "Hebo" instead of a rank. However, I strongly urge you to try and hunt down a copy of this game, it really is as good as everyone says it is! http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes awesome game indeed! Hopefully more people will play the game.

You will definitely reclaim your positions as number one if you're a little lucky with the piece sequence you get. When it comes to raw speed I'm totally no match for you unfortunately.

In the ERASE STAGE (????????) my time is 00:15:40. Everything else is fine. ^^

The first time I learned about the game is when colour_thief posted a picture of his Tetris collection. And it wouldn't surprise me if he's even better than you after seeing some of his Panel de Pon videos on youtube.

Congratulations Ai, you're getting pretty swift!

Please forgive me, but...

Thanks! I managed to perfect some strategies to improve my speed . First I look for the best piece sequence possible to clear a stage with as few pieces as possible. Afterwards I try to memorize the fastest pattern I can think of. This was hardest to do in the 2 long stages, but as you can see it paid off.

And no need to forgive you as I knew full well that you could do better than the times you posted. Especially when I got near you. I'm glad I made you improve your times. Also I still have 2 top rank positions for now... ^^

I'm pretty much at the limit of my current capabilities now, but I will still try to get sub 5 minutes soon.

I'd love to participate but I'm seemingly incapable of playing multiple sessions without overwriting the game data. I blame my non existent Japanese language skills rather than anything else.

Ai
01-15-2009, 12:42 AM
All you need to do is load your previously saved progress from a memory card at the start of the game. Make sure when you choose normal mode in story mode to select the second option if you want to continue a previously played session. The first option let's you start from the beginning. If you have a new personal record you need to save your progress to a memory card. Of course you can improve times of multiple stages and save everything at the end of a session.

I put together a quick guide earlier today. See if it helps you. In the document you will also find a link to a FAQ on GameFaqs with some additional info.

It's okay guys, no need to worry, I know how to spell "fiery". The game uses at least 2 different misspellings of the word: Ai has already pointed out one; the other, which is the one I went with, is shown on the card when you complete the stage itself.

I couldn't read it from the card after completing the stage, that's why I looked in the gallery. And it seems in the anime/manga it's also FIREY.

So this is what happens when the experts get serious. Very impressive! I'll do my best and try to stay within a minute of the leader, but at this point even that seems close to impossible.

I have a hard time unlocking the extras in the graphic gallery. I'm missing the last 3 images of the first gallery, a few spirits in the second one and I don't have anything in the next 2. Any idea how I can unlock them? Thanks in advance! ^^

Everything in Gallery 1 is obtained by playing Story mode. The final 3 images are game over screens, you have to let the 20 minute time limit expire within 1) the first 8 stages, 2) the next 8 stages, 3) the last 2 stages.

Everything in Gallery 2 except 14, 21, 23, 24, 26, 32, 33; is also obtained by playing Story mode.

From Gallery 3, graphics 23-28 are obtained by playing Story mode.

Everything in Gallery 4, plus the rest from Galleries 2 and 3, is obtained by playing vs. the CPU.

From what I understand from the explanation they give in the settings menu this is an option they say will give parents (hence mamaCon) the ability to help out their little child that isn't familiar with the game. I haven't tried it yet though.

Seriously Edo, is there something I'm not getting? I think I'm outclassed here. In stages where I'm pretty sure we both have functionally equivalent optimal seeds, I put serious effort in and can't approach your times. Is my technique that far behind or are you producing 20G on demand with mamacon or something? I like to think my timing is pretty good, so I can only be losing time between sonic drop and locking.

Edo

Seriously Edo, is there something I'm not getting? ...Is my technique that far behind or are you producing 20G on demand with mamacon or something?
No need for mamacon - the game accepts 8-way input, so you can slide the pieces about whilst holding up, forcing a pseudo 20G.

Ai, you'll probably find this interesting: http://tekipaki.jp/~myfavoritegames/sakura/sakura_top.html
This page in particular (http://tekipaki.jp/~myfavoritegames/sakura/TwCCsakuraEH.html) gives details for how to unlock all the artwork in the gallery.
I was going to give the link the other day, but for some reason the page wasn't loading. If you have similar problems getting the page to load, try again later; it seems to be an intermittent thing.

Another page: http://hiro.suzuaki.net/no-weater.TETRISwithCCsakura.html

The strategies on these pages aren't particularly ground-breaking, and most likely you will have already devised similar strategies of your own, but still, they're worth a read.

Thank you very much edo!!! Very useful links, especially the one with detailed information on how to exactly unlock everything in the game. I have unlocked a little more earlier today and with this information I will have no problems getting the rest this weekend. ^^ I'll also look into the strategies suggested to see if I can improve a little more. Next objective is to get under 04:30.

It seems the person from the site managed to complete normal mode in 03:20:74.

http://tekipaki.jp/~myfavoritegames/sak ... _time.html (http://tekipaki.jp/~myfavoritegames/sakura/best_time.html)

So you 2 know what to do! Most times are pretty close to the top times on our leaderboard. The big difference is created in the 2 longer stages. Getting under 3 minutes looks very unlikely.

Now that I know how to play with fake 20G things are much less depressing for me. I think I can actually provide competition now! http://www.tetrisconcept.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif In fact we must be approaching the absolute limit on the simpler stages... It would be interesting to have a TAS'ed point of reference.

By the way I've been using entirely my own strategies so far, though I expect (especially on the simpler stages) everyone is doing approximately the same thing. But while we're on the topic of strategies, I thought I'd remind people of Arika's official video:

http://www.arikaonline.com/download/movie/sakura3_time.mpg

I remember it being quite impressive years ago when I first saw it, but I don't want to watch it now until I've fully devised good strategies for every stage. If someone watches it and has time to kill, I would appreciate knowing the times it got as a point of reference.

Seed farming is the key for the first level.

The hole on the right is obviously filled with a single i, the hole on the left is obviously filled with a single J, and the player in the video got I,T,J.

Zaphod, if you play more you'll realise it's the "key" to every level. This game is equal parts puzzle, randomizer farming, and technical execution. Even once you've got the right pieces in the first stage, the perfect strategy is not trivially obvious or else I wouldn't have had to work for my 1:99. Even now that I know what do do speed is for now eluding me...

@ Amnesia:

Okay now I really believe that you suck royally when you play with keyboard! Those are all terrible times!!!

00:09:43 for the first stage? Clearly you are doing something wrong. Even if you use firm drop you should get a time faster than that. And don't forget you can change the piece sequence if the tetrominoes you currently get aren't optimal for the situation.

EDIT:

I see the guide I put togheter a few months ago isn't available anymore. I'll upload it again later today. It may be useful if you want to know more about the menu options.

Would someone be nice enough to explain to me how I can easily get fake 20G. I tried all sort of things in the first stage, but I'm unable to get under 00:02:50.

It's been a while since I played, but I think all you have to do is map up to a button. I seem to recall it working slightly better with mamacon turned on and mapping the stick to player 2 so that you can lock while holding down the 20G button (player 1's up mapped to a button).

That's only really needed if you play with a 4-way stick, or possibly even keyboard. If you're playing on a pad, the game has 8-way controls so you don't have to do anything fancy. Just hold up as you press left or right and when you lock you'll let go of up automatically.

Here's the slightly updated guide: Tetris with Cardcaptor Sakura - Eternal Heart ^^.pdf (http://www.sendspace.com/file/4l3p1e)

See for more details on pages 7 and 8. When you select a stage a screen appears with 2 options. The first one is for when you want to play with the same tetromino sequence as before and the other is if you want a different tetromino sequence. You can also change the tetromino sequence during the game by accessing the menu by pressing start.

You should definitley do better than that! Being more than twice as slow as me is a joke! ^^

Using mamacon to do a reversal of direction without loosing DAS charge for the T piece.
There's no need for mamacon: whilst holding up the whole time, just IRS the T counter-clockwise, DAS right until you're 1 away from the wall (requires frame perfect timing), tap left, then rotate counter-clockwise and lock.

I really don't see the interest...
It would have been more enjoyable to do it with a random sequence but anyway...

Without the proper sequence, you cannot complete the level fast as possible.

The I and the J are required for the fastest possible completion, and one of those must be first and one must be third. This is so line clear delay only happens once.

If the I is missing, your completion tiem will be a LOT slower

If someone knows of a HQ version of the Arika superplay video please do link to it.

The highest quality one would be the one hosted on Arika's site. It's old though, from dialup days, and was never available at good quality (by modern standards).

Ai
11-29-2009, 06:08 PM
Thanks anyways. I was just hoping for a better quality version to make analysis easier.

The idea was to get within a minute of you guys this year which happened. In fact I'm almost within 30 seconds if I manage to improve a little more. It'd be nice if there's more competition. Not only are the 2 players I'm up against ARS experts, they are also puzzle specialist so there's little hope I'll ever catch up.

I believe that in most stages I have optimal piece setups. It's just that my speed of execution isn't as good as you guys. Only in the 2 longer stages did I make huge improvements. I finally understand how to play fast, but it takes me too much effort to do it right even in puzzles where only a few pieces are needed. I have a very hard time getting the pieces where I want when playing too fast. And oh do I hate the randomizer farming. Sometimes it takes forever to get a piece sequence that's good to work with.

The improvements above took me close to 12 hours spread over 2 days.

SUCCESS!! Sub 4 minutes and I beat both Edo and colour_thief in a stage at last. I only needed to improve my times in the 2 longer stages. Both of you should easily be able to do better if you play a little more. Analyse the superplay video and watch where the garbage rises carefully that is all you need to do. I've been able to get similar times with different piece sequences. What is important is to memorize an optimal pattern and play without having to think about piece placement.

A one minute improvement after 15 hours of play during 3 days is a decent accomplishment. I don't know where I found the motivation, still it was fun. I will undoubtly try to fine-tune the times of the other stages at a later point, but for now I've done more than enough. And maybe if I have some time I'll record my Normal Mode play.

It's okay. You're right to post what you already have now. You can take your time and fine-tune your records over time. No need to wait until you get closer or beat the times of the others.

Actually some of your times are pretty good (especially Earthy stage) and others not so. Make sure to watch and analyze the superplay video and read the thread Kitaru created in the Strategy section. I will really try to record one of my Normal mode playthroughs when I have a little more time.

It would be easier to check if you posted the 2 times shown on screen when you highlight the Eriol stage.

Thanks for joining in Budster!

I've added your times to the first page, and I'm sure you'll be interested to hear that I calculated your time as being 00:00.10 faster than what you previously thought! Although as Ai says, it's easier to just look at the total time remaining at the start of Eriol stage, and the time taken for Eriol stage itself and do a simple subtraction.

(Note: I think there may be some inaccuracy in how the game adds the times together, maybe rounding error...? It's not serious though, and definitely not worth worrying about for now.)

I checked the last time I submitted in a spreadsheet and it's accurate in that case. But I wouldn't be surprised if some rounding errors occur.

Where are your times KevinDDR? You don't have to wait till you beat me. This isn't the kind of game where you play a few hours and get a top time. ^^

Updated the leaderboard with K's times over here because I'm not sure if this is okay. I haven't calculated the ovarall time yet.

Forced? What happened? You play too muf! ^^

Edit:

Added the total time.

Edit:

I updated the first post. I'll fix the broken link later.

I've only finished it on easy so far.

I played Easy mode for a few hours this weekend. These are my current best times for the different stages:

FIERY STAGE : 00:01.98
SWORD STAGE : 00:01.98
JUMP STAGE : 00:04.31
FLY STAGE : 00:07.14
MIRROR STAGE : 00:04.79
WINDY STAGE : 00:09.32

FLOWER STAGE : 00:05.14
ERASE STAGE : 00:09.79
EARTHY STAGE : 00:24.86
SHADOW STAGE : 00:09.70
MAZE STAGE : 00:03.67
ILLUSION STAGE : 00:07.63

WOOD STAGE : 00:06.73
THUNDER STAGE : 00:07.29
GLOW STAGE : 00:07.85
SHIELD STAGE : 00:14.97
WATERY STAGE : 00:03.12
ERIOL STAGE : 00:14.80

TOTAL TIME : 02:25:07

Under 2 minutes is probably possible. I also improved a massive 00:00.88 seconds in Normal mode:

FIERY STAGE : 00:02.19
SWORD STAGE : 00:06.75
JUMP STAGE : 00:04.85

I'll give it a more serious try if I have more time. ^^; Has anyone played the Tetris Plus and Tetris Plus 2 puzzle mode (arcade or other versions)? I played the arcade version a few times and was wondering if there's someplace where I can find the layout for the different stages. There's a video on YouTube where someone plays all stages of Tetris Plus 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTdIIhDigGI) using an unlimited bombs cheat, but so far no luck finding anything for Tetris Plus. Other pages with strategies, records etc. would also be helpful. I may create a thread for the games in the near future. ^^

I could try taking video of Tetris Plus GB at some point.

Tetris Plus is rubbish; don't waste your time with it :P.

The puzzle mode is trivially easy to complete, even on the hidden hardest difficulty (which requires a special code to unlock). Honestly, most people here could complete it on 1 credit in 3 attempts or less. And there's too much randomness involved for the mode to be taken seriously in terms of time attack.

And I'm pretty sure you've already heard me rant about how frustratingly bad the endless mode is too - I invested quite a bit of time going for a max-out, but had to give up after being screwed over numerous times by the game completely ignoring my input. Yep, for those of you who don't know, Tetris Plus has 20Hz (or was it 15Hz?) DAS, and completely ignores other directional input on the intermediate frames where the piece isn't shifting. So quick changes in direction -- like when performing a DAS and tap-back manoeuvre -- will fail very frequently, simply due to the bad programming of the input routines.

Tetris Plus 2 is also pretty bad, although I haven't really spent much time with it.

Yes, you did tell me to avoid playing the game not long ago. ^^ And I agree that the inputs aren't always very responsive.

Tetris Plus seems to provide a nice original concept where you guide a character to the floor by clearing lines as efficiently as possible. Time attack is indeed pretty useless as times aren't recorded by the game (unless it's for the bonus points you get for fast completions). It's score attack that I thought would offer a new challenge. Maybe I'll focus on improving my time in Cardcaptor Sakura, but it's seemingly impossible to do better. ^^;

EDIT:

Small improvements in Easy mode. ^^

Ok, I finally got to take a couple passes through CCS Normal at SacAnime. :) There would certainly be room for more optimization, but here is what I ended up with a straight playthrough and a few rounds of re-rolls:

2.79
22.39
11.02
9.59
18.98
17.13

9.48
25.04
54.92
16.33
12.59
14.09

10.22
21.33
20.65
17.27
14.22
1:03.08

Total: 6:01.12

I have my own copy of this game, but I don't have a proper way to play Japanese PlayStation games at the moment. :( I'd like to get that sorted so I can optimize things further.
